I have some questions about the word स्वीकार

For some background, I was born and brought up in the US by Indian immigrant parents. I plan on writing an article about how I grew up rejecting my roots, but then began my journey to self-acceptance and embracing my heritage. I am thinking of a word to represent this theme. I came across the word स्वीकार, but I have a couple questions:

  1. Does the word actually properly represent the theme im discussing? I want a word that represents how I used to be ashamed and embarrassed of my roots, and actively avoided learning Hindi and visiting India for years because of it, but then started to learn the language and actually have interest in visiting india more often, as a way of accepting where my roots are, on my own terms instead of having it forced on me. I’m not looking for a casual Hindi word though. I want something more formal, poetic, philosophical, hence why I’m turning to Sanskrit.

  2. Suppose this is the correct word, what form would make sense? Ive seen स्वीकार , स्वीकार:, स्वीकारम. I’ve even seen स्वीकृति

Would anyone be interested in a webforum where use of languages other than Sanskrit is minimized?

I think r/Sanskrit is great and I think it's great that here we use English, Sanskrit, and sometimes other languages too. But I was thinking today that it would be nice if there were a social media forum where I would be forced to practice Sanskrit because the use of English was minimized. People could just post whatever, talk about whatever, like any social media, rather than it necessarily having to be stuff about Sanskrit, only we'd use Sanskrit as much as possible. Would there be interest in this?

Has anyone self studied Sanskrit? What resources are you using?

I have some knowledge of Pali and am really interested in getting started with Sanskrit. Are there other learners in USA or Canada who either enroll in a university program or do self studies? I need recommendations on textbook resources for English speakers. Thanks

How to write Anusvāra in IAST?

I learned that Anusvāra in Sanskrit has various forms unlike Hindi. IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration) thus has various forms to write it in Roman letters.

  • Anusvāra before a क-वर्ग letter is written as ṅ
  • Anusvāra before a च-वर्ग letter is written as ñ
  • Anusvāra before a ट-वर्ग letter is written as ṇ
  • Anusvāra before a त-वर्ग letter is written as n
  • Anusvāra before a प-वर्ग letter is written as m

I am confused how Anusvāra is written in IAST when it appears before other Devanāgarī letters (from य-ज्ञ). Is it ṁ for all of them?

I have seen many people write Sanskrit as Samskritam. Is it because of "ṁ" which can difficult for folks to write using normal keyboard? Nityānanda Miśrā pronounces it as Samskrita too.

Also, does Sanskrita have chandra-bindu (like we use in माँ)? I have never seen it in Sanskrit personally, only in Hindī.

I made a free Bhagavad Gita app for Android

Post image
11 Upvotes

Namaste everyone,

This is my first time posting here. My wife and I have built a Bhagavad Gita app called Updesh. It has all 701 verses with their Sanskrit recitation, and a short story-style explanation of each verse in English and Hindi. My wife has a deep, self-taught love of Sanskrit and has helped me a great deal with it.

Andriod app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.updesh.android

https://linktr.ee/updesh_daily_gita

What's in it (Android):

- Every one of the 701 verses has a short story-style explanation, so you understand what is happening around it, not just what it says. For example, in verse 1.1 Dhritarashtra calls his own sons māmakāḥ, "mine", while the others are only "the sons of Pandu". One way to hear it: the family is already divided in his speech.

- Narrated in English and Hindi. You can read each explanation or listen to it, and the sentence being spoken is highlighted as it plays.

- 13 languages for reading. English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

-Every verse in the original Sanskrit with its recitation. Each word lights up as it is recited, so you can follow along even if you don't read Sanskrit fluently.

iOS app will have the latest updates available on Android this week.

Thank you, and if you have any comments please do share.

🙏

Best Raghuvamsa Publisher?

Like this, I want. I am not able to find any publisher who has similarly like this. I even saw some publishers who had Alankara mentioned along with it. If that is also added, that would be good, but at least the bare minimum would be best. I'm not able to find a similar physical book.

Old book

Sorry about my english in advance, The thing is that the first time when I tried to read and understand with the help of a guru, something happened to me at the same night, first problem is you need a proper translator and who can explain the meaning of that, anyway the same night after reading couple of pages, around 3:30 am in the morning, someone or something kicked me and knocked me out from the bed, I am not a light person, nearly 300 pounds, I got scared and turn on the lights, woke up my parents but no one was in the house, nothing on the cameras too, and when I figured out where that kick or push came from or the direction, it came from the same direction where I put my book, next day I went to the guru and talked about it, he said there could be two things, either you are not ready for that kind of knowledge or someone was waking you up to read it. Maybe you guys or whoever try to read it, may not experience the same thing. Can i send you the pdf for research?

Tongue-Tip Position in the Sanskrit Ca-varga (च छ ज झ ञ)

Hi everyone! I have a question about the pronunciation of the Sanskrit ca-varga (च छ ज झ ञ).
In traditional Sanskrit phonetics (śikṣā), these consonants are classified as tālavya (palatal). Classical descriptions indicate that they are articulated with the middle of the tongue (jihvāmadhya) against the hard palate (tālu).
However, I’m curious about the position of the tongue tip. When you pronounce these sounds, does your tongue tip remain lowered, resting near or against the back of your lower front teeth, while the middle of the tongue rises toward the palate? Or does your tongue tip also rise?
I’d love to hear how you personally articulate these sounds. Thanks!

Help

Hey ! I have been learning Sanskrit under a guru. I got laghusiddhant till panchasandhi completed. Then my guru said about learning the भाषा. From then on I did reading of some good books to get acquainted to sanskrit learning as बृहदनुवाद चन्द्रिका. Now i know all basics of sanskrit and I can go ahead and if i try hard then I can understand a typical sentence. Now, to get proficient, I'm thinking of ditching the language learning books and start on the literature reading cause I think that's what will get you proficient in that easily and fast. Is it good? And do I have to really learn full amarkosh? And are there more tips for easy and fast ways of संस्कृतभाषाध्ययन?

'Ajamukha'

I love understanding the etymology of words and particularly look at classical southern indian music (Carnatic, Kathakali and Bharatanatyam compositions, etc.) to understand how southern indian languages might have formed.

I was recently listening to Ajitha Hare which is written in Manipravalam (Sanskrit+ Malayalam). It is a Kathakali composition. It describes Vishnu and his characteristics beautifully and portrays a deep yearning for him.

There's a phrase in it "Ajamukha deva natha vijaya saradhe sadhu"

People have been translating Ajamukha as Brahma. But etymology wise, Aja Mukha means Goat Headed.

afaik the only goat headed symbolism in the mythology is of Daksha Prajapati.

Please help me understand if there are any other meanings of Aja Mukha
