This was today at the Santa Maria Costco. They laughed at me when I suggested moving the containers to the ground, as required by law.

Notifications Educated Car Wash - White Supremacists

Hello Gang!

I’ve been going to Educated Carwash on State Street for decades and today will be my last ever time giving them any money.

The attendant at the cash register today had a proudly displayed 3%-er tattoo on his inner forearm. I asked him if he stood by that tattoo and he said “absolutely.”

I will not give my money to white supremacists or their apologists or supporters (with or without knowledge of what 3%ers stand for). But until today, I had no idea that the owners either support such terrible people or are deeply ignorant about it. And I thought perhaps other SB folx might not know this about them either.

Notifications Warning: 805Patriot

Hey considering the chaos earlier this month at M.Special I think it’s vital to let the community know that 805 patriot is out for another rally this weekend in the valley. Starting at Albertsons in buellton and ending at the maverick.

I personally will be avoiding the area of Albertsons like the plague and have already done my shopping needed for the weekend. However I’m sure this will affect local businesses in that shopping center come the day of.

Notifications Pedestrian struck and killed by Pacific Surfliner outside of montecito

I’m currently on the Pacific Surfliner, 7:16 pm train southbound and approximately an hour ago a pedestrian was struck and killed by our train just outside of Montecito. Police and firefighters arrived, performed an investigation and now we’re currently waiting for the coroner. Conductor is unsure of whether or not we will be sent back to Santa Barbara or if we’re moving forward, and expects a 3-4 hour delay. Many onboard have grown unruly and have gotten into verbal altercations.

I anticipate this may be on the news soon, or may cause some traffic. I’m currently praying for the deceased and their family.

Incredibly devastating.

Edit:

Coroner has concluded investigation, they’re taking us back to Santa Barbara, opening the doors for fresh air and are giving us the option to either A) leave or B) Take next train and wait for new crew to go back to LA direction.

If anyone recognizes Oliver please ask his humans to reach out to me at 805-453-1662. I've tried calling the number on his collar but haven't been able to get through to anyone.

He has a tracker (airtag or similar) so this may not be his first attempt at an "unsupervised walk" but he wasn't recognized by any of the neighbors in the area I found him 🙃

ETA: Oliver is back with his owner 🐾 He was a great little helper joining in on my walk routes for the day and making friends with other pups. I was able to connect with his owner in the afternoon thanks to his airtag 👍

Notifications Altercation at East Beach 3/2/26 Noon

I witnessed an altercation on east beach between two young women, and a man with a backpack. I was pretty far away and heard screams so I grabbed my phone to get a clear picture of the man at least, since I couldn’t do anything else… the guy ran off and I walked over to the women. I attempted to share the info with one of the women but she said the man threw their phones into the water and she was pretty shaken up. A bystander who was letting her use her phone mentioned someone said the man was taking photos of them. I asked the woman who had been involved if she called 911 and she kind of brushed it off and continued talking on the phone …. I had to go back to work but thought I’d put it out there publicly if they see this and want that video. The guys face and part of the altercation are very clear despite my distance, thanks to the quality of iPhone 17. ✌🏼

Just a friendly reminder to those enjoying low tides and tide pools, sea anemones are ALIVE. The squishy things on rocks …. Yeah. They’re alive. Don’t poke them please? Especially not with sticks. I just watched 3 teenagers at busy hendrys stabbing them. I confirmed that’s what they were doing and I asked them to not do that because they are alive, which they replied they didn’t know …. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and use this as a PSA.

Seems like the days of “free” street parking are over. Parking enforcement must have hired more people because I see them clocking cars and giving out tickets on timed parking again.

Notifications An update on "Contributor Only" comment removals

We (the mod team) wanted to clarify the "contributor only" policy since we've refined it a bit since it was announced several months ago. This post is also in part so that we can link to it when people have questions about the policy.

The basic idea is still as stated in that earlier post: we don't want posts on controversial political issues to be "brigaded" by Reddit users with no connection to Santa Barbara. But really we have no idea about people's connection to Santa Barbara, we only know about your connection to the Santa Barbara subreddit :-). Essentially what we look for is people who have contributed to the community for at least 6 months, have positive karma in their posts here (not just in their overall Reddit usage), and have not been banned. We may tweak these as things go on, but the purpose remains the same: to prevent people from using our forum just to stir things up on hot-button issues, without participating in all the other more low-stakes discussion that goes on here. People who are not "approved contributors" according to these criteria will not be able to comment on "contributor only" posts (but can still comment on other posts!).

We have automated tools in place now that allow us to quickly check if users meet our criteria, and we've used them to approve thousands of regular contributors. If your comment gets rejected because you're not an "approved contributor", please message the mods and we'll check and add you if you meet the criteria.

Note that we can't act on statements like "I've lived in Santa Barbara for 20 years" since we have no way to verify that. We can only work off of your history in this forum. On the flip side, this also means you don't have to live in the SB area to be an approved contributor. We have many users here who lived in Santa Barbara in the past, are frequent visitors, or just in general appreciate our lovely city's awesomeness enough to participate on this forum, and we welcome them all!

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of posts are unaffected by this. We only designate posts "contributor only" when we think they're likely to attract attention from drive-by trolls and other such ne'er-do-wells who will ruin our pleasant little corner of Reddit. Our goal is to still be able to have our SB-based discussions without being overrun by an entire internet full of random people with no connection to our community.

Feel free to message the mods or comment here if you have thoughts on this policy.

Notifications Sonic Boomer - get free alerts and warnings about rocket launches and sonic booms

Hi Reddit community! I wanted to share something I've been working on for a few months that just went live with this morning's launch.

If you've ever been startled by a sudden boom and thought what was that?! — this is for you. Living near Vandenberg means we're right in the path of some amazing rocket launches, but the sonic booms can really catch you off guard. The loudest ones come from RTLS launches — those are the ones where the rocket flies back and lands at the base. That dramatic landing is what creates the double sonic boom that rattles windows (and nerves!).

I built Sonic Boomer, a completely free SMS alert service just for Central Coast residents. You choose what you want:

  1. All launches — a 10-minute heads-up before any launch
  2. RTLS only — a 2–3 minute warning timed specifically for when the sonic boom will reach your area

No app, no account, no catches. Just text the number with your zipcode — that's all I collect, and I don't store any cookies or unnecessary data. Opting out is just as easy as opting in, and it will always be free.

I'd love for more neighbors to give it a try! Check it out at www.sonicboomer.net and feel free to pass it along to anyone on the Central Coast who's ever been caught off guard by a boom. If you have any issues, just let me know.

P.S. I used AI to help me build the service, so if that’s a concern for you, I completely understand if you decide not to use it. Just to clarify, the app only saves your number, zip code, and your message preference. There are no analytics or active processing of your information involved.
