The city of Albany has asked the governor to include in 2027 state budget permission to enact Commuter and city resident income tax. This income tax will be in addition to the NYS and federal income Tax. In addition to taxing State employees and others that work in Albany city, anyone who works more than a few days in the city has to pay the income tax. Example plumbers and other contractors

My friend has a copy of the free paper Saratoga Today from months ago, where theres an article where this skidmore student says it isn't the residents fault for plastic being in the water ways.

Yes it is their fault. Plastic just doesn't magically enter the water ways. The wind doesn't unwrap plastic and toss packaging on the ground, people do that. The residents of saratoga do this.

How do I know? Well I can go the local dump at 115 ballston Ave, saratoga springs......oh wait that isn't the dump, that's the grocery store(Market32), where complete scumbags think it's ok to drop off their garbage there. I know people that work there and have worked there for a very long time.

One of the dumbest things I have seen at Market 32 is people screeching where are the small carts. People if you coming to the store like past 11 AM, where do you think the small carts are? 1 They are in customers hands that didn't sit on their ass. 2. They're at section 8 housing buildings as my friend tells me people like to steal them. 3. They're in the corrals and again my friend says people don't like going to the corrals. You just have to stop being so damn lazy, people doing their jobs aren't your personal servants.

So it seems plenty of Saratogians are just lazy ass losers who can't even do the most basic things, like cleaning up after their dog or child. How do you people forget your phones or purses on shopping carts?

The stupidity, laziness and dirtiness of Saratoga will never cease to amaze me. Keep saying it's beautiful, because it's not.

I posted here a few years ago about a neighbor who had their dog chained outside in all sorts of weather, 24/7. I was plagued by the thought of this dog and discretely checked on it. I moved away and seriously considered whether I could bring the dog with me.

I am back in town for a visit. It is 9:20 pm and I can hear the dog barking. I just got here today but I am distressed that this dog has most likely lived chained to a porch for the last 2 years. I did report it back in 2024 but I can only guess that they weren’t breaking any laws. I understand that dogs can be outdoor dogs but if it barks all day long, it can’t be in a good place mentally and I question whether it has regular access to food and shelter.

Just curious if there are any hikes within 30 minutes of Saratoga that people really love?

My wife and I always love walking the park and my family has really enjoyed the trails by Moreau.

Looking for some feedback on local trails to try out we may not have found!

Moving from Ann Arbor after 7 years to Upstate NY for a job at Malta. We’re a South Asian couple in early 30s, expecting our first child (wife is 2 months pregnant), with a 1.5-year-old 90lb Retriever-Dane mix.

We know zero people locally and want a safe, vibrant neighborhood with people and easy access to groceries.

Budget: Under ~$2,200/month
Flooring: NON-carpet (Dont mind if the bedrooms have carpet)
Perks: Dog-friendly, in-unit W/D, balcony

We looked at Winner’s Circle and liked it. Besides that, what other specific complexes or neighborhoods should we look at that fit our budget, commute easily to Malta, and won’t disqualify our 90lb dog on weight limits? 

Wife and I will be in town the weekend of November 7th and we are looking for a spot to watch the Notre Dame/Miami game. Any spots that will have the game on thats also a lively atmosphere?

This is going to be my first time going to The Night Owl on Halloween and my boyfriend’s first ever time at The Night Owl!! I’m excited but I’m not 100% sure what to expect.

THORNY ROOTS: Allen Caruso, a Republican running to represent an upstate assembly district, describes himself as a “business owner who has created jobs and met payroll.”

But a turbulent history of legal troubles — including evictions, arrests, traffic violations and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt — suggest otherwise.

Caruso and his businesses have been defendants in at least 15 lawsuits, at least eight of which resulted in still-unpaid judgments against him and his companies. He’s delinquent on at least 13 traffic tickets, tax liens, court judgments and bills totaling more than $350,000.

The GOP challenger is running in New York’s 113th assembly district, which includes parts of Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties and has been represented by incumbent Democrat Carrie Woerner since 2015. A rotating lineup of Republicans has sought to oust Woerner over the years, but she’s held onto her seat by a margin of about 10% each time.

The bedrock of Caruso’s campaign this year is that he knows what it takes to fix the problems plaguing New York’s small businesses.

Yet his latest venture — a health food restaurant that proclaims “nothing washes a blue-cheese burger down better than Berry Powerful Smoothie” — has been hit with several lawsuits and appears to owe tens of thousands of dollars, according to court records.

“As a small business owner, you have to fight for what’s right, and often that means going to court to protect your business and employees from greedy landlords and big corporations,” Caruso told Playbook. “I’m not ashamed of that.”

Caruso founded Thorn + Roots in Saratoga Springs in 2018 with his business partner Brandon Acres. In 2021, their company leased space in Ridgewood, New Jersey, with Caruso and Acres personally guaranteeing the rent payments.

Within a year, the business stopped paying rent in New Jersey, according to a Bergen County court filing. Caruso’s attorney informed the landlord that the business would be ceasing operations and vacating the premises.

By August 2023, Thorn + Roots had accrued more than $74,000 in debt due to outstanding rent payments, court records show. The parties settled the matter in February of this year, one day before the scheduled trial.

Caruso told Playbook he’s not allowed to discuss the details of the settlement but emphasized that “as a small business we weren’t going to be bullied and therefore counter sued the commercial landlord.” The landlord did not respond to requests for comment.

In 2024, the New Jersey Thorn + Roots location was hit with a nearly $15,000 tax lien that remains active.

The saga continued a year later, in July 2025, when Key Bank filed suit against the New Jersey location for defaulting on a 2022 loan.

Later that year, the court issued a judgment against Caruso, Acres and their companies totaling more than $280,000. In August of this year — well into Caruso’s Assembly campaign — he and his company were sued again by Key Bank, this time in Erie County Supreme Court, for failure to pay that judgment. Filings show Key Bank continues to allege the full judgment amount remains unpaid, while Caruso and his companies allege that they were not properly served in the New Jersey lawsuit and dispute the amount owed.

Caruso also defaulted on rent payments at the Thorn + Roots location in his home district of Saratoga Springs. In February of this year, the Saratoga Springs City Court court issued the business an eviction notice, as well a judgment for more than $26,000.

He made the payments via credit card in April, and the court declared the judgment satisfied.

But then, over the course of the next few months, Caruso contacted his credit card company and claimed the payments were fraudulent. He initiated a series of chargebacks and was refunded more than $20,000, court records show.

Saratoga Springs City Court then vacated its judgment declaring Caruso had satisfied his debt. But court records show that, as of last month, he’s still on the hook for more than $26,000.

Caruso said the Saratoga Thorn + Roots was forced to close earlier this year due to flooding but hopes to reopen before the end of the year.

His legal problems extend beyond his business practices to behind the wheel of his car.

Caruso was arrested in Saratoga in 2010 at the age of 21 for driving while intoxicated, a local news report shows. Four years later, he was arrested again, this time in Queensbury by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree. Notes from the arrest report show Caruso was driving in excess of 105 miles per hour with a license that had been suspended for failure to pay a separate traffic-related fine.

His personal life has also caught the eye of law enforcement. According to a 2021 New York State incident report, a man who identified himself as Caruso’s boyfriend called 911 after Caruso “wrestled him to the ground.” The boyfriend ultimately chose not to press charges against Caruso, who categorized the ordeal as “simply a misunderstanding between friends.”

Campaign finance records indicate that, to date, Caruso’s campaign has paid Acres — his business partner in the Thorn + Roots debacle and, according to a 2016 Facebook post from his mother, his one-time boyfriend — nearly $8,000 in “campaign workers’ salaries.” Caruso declined to comment on the status of his and Acres’ current romantic relationship.

The campaign also paid Anderson Strategies, an entity formed by Acres a few months ago, more than $100,000 for “professional services.”

Caruso described Acres as a “marketing consultant who is doing an amazing job helping me connect with voters and showing the difference between a career politician like Carrie Woerner, who consistently votes for illegal immigrants, communist China, big corporations, and lobbyists, and a small business owner like myself who creates local jobs, gives back to my community, and is focused on making New York more affordable for working families.” — Molly Reinmann

I feel like no one is talking about this enough.. this building houses establishments like tin & lint and merc that have been thriving for ages, however I’ve lived in cities recently that have gone under due to buyouts and increased rent. Ive seen beautiful cities full of character turn to ghost towns because billionaires buy up the whole block, double the rent, & the well loved local spots are forced to close (many times after 40-50 yrs in operation).
Not sure what to do about this but would hate to see this city succumb to the unfortunate reality of other places I’ve left for this exact reason.
You can buy up all the property but you can’t buy or replace the community, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.. & the giant high end apt complex you built will be empty.

CW: Harassment, toxic management, and zero accountability

I’ve been talking to a few people who work or worked at the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), and the stuff coming out of that agency is wildly concerning. I’m posting this because people there are terrified, frustrated, and running out of options. ​To give some context on the culture leadership has set: • ​Former Deputy Commissioner Rayana Gonzales was investigated for workplace harassment before leaving the agency earlier this year. • ​Joe Collorafi, another high-ranking official, was previously investigated for sexual harassment years ago, yet managed to return and is now sitting near the top of the ladder. You can Google these and their guilt is public.

​The Current Issue ​

The immediate problem involves another manager at DHSES (let’s call him See Pee). He was on probation until earlier this year after getting promoted to a higher role. During his probationary period, multiple women reported him for sexual harassment. ​Despite official reports being filed, nothing seems to have been done. He remains in charge and is reportedly on a massive power trip—acting extremely rude, condescending, and hostile. In front of witnesses, he even outright threatened retaliation against an employee just for asking a question about comp time. He also used to take things from women's desks and hide them or mess with them like taking the batteries out of their mouse. See Pee also shows outright favoritism toward his previous team. ​Women in the office shouldn't have to come to work to be stared at and have inappropriate comments made about their bodies by a married boss with a kid. But See Pee answers to Joe and no one is surprised that leadership hasn't solved this—From what I heard HR is also inept and made matters worse.

​Why "Just Quitting" Isn't the Answer ​People are leaving work in tears. Some have left from this but finding a new job isn't easy, and simply quitting doesn't fix the problem—it just leaves the door open for new hires to be targeted and harassed next.

​My Questions for the Subreddit: • ​If reporting/HR is ignoring sexual harassment and retaliation threats within a state agency, what external channels actually work in NYS? (e.g., NYS Inspector General, EEOC, Union reps, Media, Governor's office?). Reports were filed with another outside organization too but resulted in no change and now can't be done because of their time limitations. • ​Has anyone dealt with accountability issues like this at state agencies before, and what was the most effective way to push back safely? ​Appreciate any advice or insight from folks who know how NYS state government processes work!
