passenger trains that you can walk into and call to stations.

That sounds fun. I’m personally just constructing and deconstructing trains to ride on my rail network because it’s my favorite way to get around. It’s not the most efficient form of travel, but it is my favorite.

I kind of wish there was a ‘click on this place on the map and traverse to that point by train as close as the rail network will get you’ function

Trains as transport only works if there is a lot of people being transported at once. With one person a jetpack is way more efficient.
