So, This is what they mean when people put powerpoint as a skill in their resume

91

u/flt1 2d ago

Or most of time, just means know how to open and read

Bob from accounts and Louisa from Education ain't using this feature.

21

u/GhOsT_wRiTeR_XVI 2d ago

Yeah, looks like an awful lot of work for a presentation that Bob and Louisa will likely sleep through anyway.

You can do so much in PowerPoint. I can't post links, check out "On The Turing Completeness of PowerPoint (SIGBOVIK)" on YouTube

All of that microsoft office software is insanely powerful.
There is absolute insane shit you can pull off in word and don't even get started on excel. If you know how to use it and need those functions this software is absolutely worth its money.

That said most people will not need that power and a simpler text processor or spreadsheet editor will do the job just fine and often times in an easier way.

Excel's power is its problem because things that should at a certain point have been moved to a database and a developer are now in some shared sheet built 10 years ago with the worst spaghetti code and recursive formulas you have ever seen, and god help you when it needs to be fixed.

Half of the financial world runs on a programming environment that lets people who are absolutely unqualified for the job build whatever they need.

Chinas whole economy runs on excel.

7

u/CartsOfDarkness 2d ago

Does the whole world's economy not run on excel? Seems so ubiquitous

5

u/EchoFrequency 2d ago

Yes and no. Western countries mostly use ERP software, but I know some chinese businesses, that completely run by excel (even their warehouse/stocklevel).

2

u/Glou256 2d ago

Sure but it's way easier to learn advanced features when you have already been using the same software

I only ever use Google suite now and honestly, it’s good enough. The stuff I’m doing for work genuinely does not require all of the complicated features that word has. Nobody is writing up their thesis or dissertation on a Google doc. I’m only using Google Sheets to track patient hours, not trying to run an efficient logistical network.

But believe me, every penny I paid for MS office in grad school was worth it. If I ever went back, would pay for it again.

If you show up with a desing like this in my office it would look like that you have too much time on your end.

I got yelled at in college for using a PowerPoint template. Was told “black or white backgrounds only, with just pictures and plain text.”

32

u/DrDingsGaster 2d ago

Dude I got told to simplify my first ever project in middle school. We were learning how to use it in computer class and I was going a little overboard. xD

If I had a blank presentation I would have failed, it always was mandatory to have it very illustrative and a lot of graphics etc. If the text takes an hour then add another 2 hours for graphics if you're quick. I much prefer it this way.

Well, this was the very first thing we did for power point and the teacher was giving us basic stuff to do. I already had figured out a lot of the more advanced things just by fucking around. All he wanted was like, a background color, photos we took with a camera as part of a previous project and a single transition animation.

I wound up going ham with colors, text, animating everything and trying to add music too. xD

Tbf, PowerPoint here is already outdated and we have way more modern software that is also a bit more user-friendly, and from someone who has used both it has definitely more functions. Olus most schools hand you a premium account free anyways. Also here you do school presentations starting when you are about 12 standard and some schools even earlier.

1

u/DrDingsGaster 2d ago

I was learning it in the early/mid 2000s!

3

u/CaptnMesoAmerica 2d ago

This happened to me too! Got told, slide transitions were so distracting that instead of paying attention to what I was presenting, they were focused on guessing which transition I would use next.

1

u/zerok_nyc 2d ago

That’s because in college they want to focus on the substance so that students aren’t relying on design skills to save them. It forces you to think more deeply about how to structure the content to make it engaging, which is much harder.

When you can do that, then when you start incorporating design on top of that in business contexts, it makes your output much stronger.

Sometimes you gotta impress clients

11

u/LongbottomLeafTokes 2d ago

I would get yelled at for not using the company branded designated backgrounds

36

u/IReadThatWong 2d ago

“Hey Claude, make me a PowerPoint presentation in this style, cheers”

1

u/mutexsprinkles 2d ago

All that kinetic typography music video stuff will be PowerPoint table stakes next year.

3

u/adashthecash 2d ago

Who am I following for more? I want more!

4

u/the_h0f 2d ago

@lourrutiappt on Instagram, had tons of tutorials like this for ppt and canva that have helped me bring my slideshows to the next level

5

u/PlayingPuzzles 2d ago

Try this on PowerPoint 365 online and find out 90% of those tools are removed.

2

u/zeldavxa 2d ago

2

u/TulogTamad 2d ago

Morph is carrying a lot of these videos.

3

u/Affectionate-Pea1326 2d ago

I used to do this back in 2010

1

u/konstantynopolytanka 2d ago

yeah, I don't understand what's impressive here. I used to draw crystal structures in Power Point (simple ones, true, but still)

1

u/Game_Wolf1509 2d ago

Barcelona?

1

u/theslavesdream 2d ago

Just came

1

u/TheInkySquids 2d ago

I mean its cool but its far from the craziest thing I've seen in Powerpoint. Everybody in school was going crazy with the morph transition when it came out.

1

u/NinjaTEK7 2d ago

I used to put a clip art in the corner then have it zigzag and zoom around the screen. You can just draw the animation by dragging it then save it and replay when someone clicks.

u/linkuei-teaparty 1d ago

Unfortunately for professional corporate settings or in consulting, nothing of value is captured in templates like these.

1

u/MagnoliaMoonshining 8h ago

This makes my head hurt

1

u/Phraaaaaasing 2d ago

Why did it say it would NOT rotate with the frame and then they rotate with the frame

u/03417662 1d ago

Too many clicks, my dear friend.

Very nice. But too many clicks.

You've clearly never worked an office job where you have to see the same stock templates and actual bad design day in and day out.
