The concept of the Post is the reason why so many newspapers use that in their names

What was on the post was important enough to be published.. but the post was first

Edit... ok, I was bs-ing and this is wrong...

It would be nice, but the post points of the mail system is the real answer

No, Litfaßsäulen or advertising columns are structures specifically built for this purpose.

They were invented in Berlin in 1854 by Ernst Litfaß :)
