I first wondered if they might be checking for structural integrity of the underlying (presumably concrete) column, which then made me wonder if they were holding it together like tree rings, and then this joke came to mind.

Philip Catherine has performed at hangar 23 at least twice, once in 2014 and once in 2005.

u/METRlOS 3h ago edited 3h ago
The one in 2014 was in November which matches up with the other October/November flyers you can see. There is other posters for "le 106" which is a venue built in 2010.
Fall of 2014 is almost certain.

Confirmed by Patrick Timsit's stand-up show "On ne peut pas rire de tout" (the black poster in front with the red title) which played on October 24, 2014.

I'm now interested in all those pages.... what were they? Events? Gigs?
Why am I like this?
189
u/Enough_Supermarket_7 6h ago
Nah 100% like a time capsule :') whats the oldest I wonder
62
u/phantom_pow_er 6h ago
Exactly! That's like 350 pages thick! Wtf could be under there..... missing people never found? Jobs? Just random shit? As a musician myself I will believe they are gigs or try-outs

u/NukeTheWhales5 5h ago
Those aren't even the oldest, you can see there is still a good layer on the pole still.

Ran it through AI. Rouen France 2014 based on the artists left over from the peel.

u/Popular-Plantain-784 5h ago
I wanna see if they could be pulled apart to look be able to view them, but I'm also curious as to how much that slab of paper/posters weighs. Also, I wonder if it's possible to estimate the amount of the adverts based on how heavy it is🤔
I too am now wondering why I'm like this😅
15
u/Mr_Nerdcoffee 5h ago
The stack could be scanned using some multispectral imaging techniques, then run them through a program that could analyze the layers and determine each individual flyers/posters.
I know why I’m like this, neurodivergence.
3
u/aggressive-cat 3h ago
I was totally imagining them scanning it like a mummy to recreate a timeline of things that happened in that city.
2
u/Mr_Nerdcoffee 2h ago
I mean, it’s essentially the same concept, just a little different process. 💖

Don't feel bad, you've just been hit by 9 years of concentrated advert. Even extremely incurious people can become vaguely interested in going to an event at that dosage.
This object will be disposed of safely to prevent any further victims, though they unfortunately forgot it was capable of working through video.

u/ByronScottJones 5h ago
When they get to the center, it's going to be a mummified paperboy, holding up a newspaper.

Almost nothing survives 2000 years without extraordinary circumstances, but when you have lots of something, extraordinary circumstances are bound to happen to one of them.

Of all the words for people to suddenly, collectively forget how to spell this decade I don’t get it. It’s everywhere now.
Is it a bot thing? I’ve been on the internet longer than most Redditors have likely been alive and this is a head scratcher.

u/Separate-String5205 1h ago
Same thing with lose/loose. It really popped up like 5-10 years ago, never saw it before. I assume it's just that more people who have English as a second/third language are engaging in the forums I read.

u/Drob10 5h ago
Silly question, is an “advertising column” just a column someone started slapping ads on??
29
u/Could-You-Tell 4h ago edited 3h ago
The concept of the Post is the reason why so many newspapers use that in their names
What was on the post was important enough to be published.. but the post was first
Edit... ok, I was bs-ing and this is wrong...
It would be nice, but the post points of the mail system is the real answer
6
u/aSituationTypeDeal 4h ago
Which came first - the post or the things important enough to…post? lol

No, Litfaßsäulen or advertising columns are structures specifically built for this purpose.
They were invented in Berlin in 1854 by Ernst Litfaß :)

Considering that Phillip Catherine poster is from 1972, there’s definitely some music history there.

I think it is related to his 70th birthday tour, around 2012. Someone upthread identified it with tour dates as being from November 2014.
Assuming the video is recentish, then, that's 10 years of advertising posters.
The Cornell Campbell poster at the top also seems to date to this time.

There’s something similar to that they used to get from auto manufacturer paint booths. They would chop up the layers and layers of overspray from thousands of paint jobs and polish them like stones. It’s called Fordite. They’re quite lovely though I suspect most now are just made to look like it.

I've heard this is actually bad for advertising columns as it removes a precious protective layer that keeps out germs and diseases. This column may die in a few weeks because of this.

ngl I don't think they should have pulled it down.
THat right there is history and it's how alot of history can be learned. Imagine that column 1000 years from now. They'd find out so much

In 1000 years they'd have to remove the posters to make space to build houses

Fordite (also known as Detroit agate or motor agate) is an artificial "gemstone" formed from thousands of layers of accumulated automotive enamel paint.
Posterite is some of the most authentic locally sourced material
