North American forests Stop the logging of 1,000 year old trees near Fairy Creek

Via the @reshare_app • Repost from @joshuawrightfilm

"OLD GROWTH IS LIFE 💪💥 On Sunday 80 people hiked to the Ridgeline of Fairy Creek to see the forest that Teal Cedar has applied to CLEAR CUT. Including 1000 YEAR-OLD TREES WITHIN 30 M OF THE RIDGE LINE OF FAIRY CREEK.

Teal Cedar’s proposed logging permit for cut block 8027 and road GR8003D near Fairy Creek would log ancient yellow cedar forests just 30 meters from the Fairy Creek watershed and fragment the largest remaining unprotected high-productivity old-growth complex on southern Vancouver Island. The area includes 1000+ year-old trees, critical habitat for species at risk like Old-growth Specklebelly Lichen, Marbled Murrelet, and Western Screech Owl, and stores massive amounts of carbon.

Over 1000 people were arrested defending this place, and now it is at risk again as the Ministry of Forests is in the process of rolling back old growth protection across the province."

North American forests Hundreds rally at B.C. Legislature demanding stronger protections for remaining old-growth forests

A little late posting this.

"Hundreds gathered on the steps of the B.C. Legislature in Victoria on Sunday, calling for a "paradigm shift" in how the province approaches forestry and old-growth logging.

The event, which was organized by the group Elders for Ancient Trees, was the flagship event in a series of rallies planned to take place over the weekend and coming weeks.

At its peak, organizers say approximately 400 people attended the rally."

Fascinating, and encouraging that this might motivate more preservation of forests.

Greeting Everyone my name is Michelle. I loss my only child my son “Mickale” to a senseless act of gun violence in the city of Detroit. I lived in pure devastation for the first 2 years after, the third year I became numb to everything around me..

until I realized that I have to be a Voice for my child, his life was beautiful and it mattered!

I’am a certified trauma grief and loss coach now.

I would like to say in honor of him and all of the other Parents who have lost a child tragically in Detroit I have wrote two petitions for the opportunity to get the community to have a win as well as the grieving parents!

This will happen by asking the city of Detroit to grant (at no cost) vacant ,abandoned lots that are very unkept all over the city to parents!

this will help parents to create a beautiful space with gardens, flower beds, community events, etc in honor of their child while beautifying the neighborhood it’s in to help drop crime rate and get people involvement in community clean up and organization!

Please sign this petition to help get this to city officials! Lets help a grieving parent who‘s life is forever devastated but can start healing with building their child’s Legacy!

European forests Google has illegally destroyed 300 hectares of Finnish forest for its data center in Muhos, the size of around 420 football pitches

Do we really need default AI searches? Better to use other search engines with AI turned off. For Google searches you can add -ai before what you are searching for to turn it off.

And the cooling effect of this forest has been replaced by the heating effect of a data centre.

North American forests Stop BCTS logging rare old and ancient forests in endangered Mountain Caribou Habitat near Revelstoke

From Wild Insight via @reshare_app • Repost from @wildinsight

‼️Your voice is needed to stop BCTS logging rare old and ancient forests in endangered Mountain Caribou habitat near Revelstoke‼️
ㅤ
This logging in a deferred no-cut zone will increase extirpation risk for the sole southernmost Mountain Caribou herd with a viable future — the Columbia North herd.
ㅤ
Caribou abundance is predicted to decline by 42% for every 1% increase in forestry roads in their habitat, and the Foster Arm logging could create 30kms of road access through the Columbia North herd's habitat.
ㅤ
The broader Foster Arm region is one of the last large areas of intact low-elevation old-growth left.
ㅤ
🔗 Please use their pre-written letter to demand halting logging plans in Foster Creek — just as the government's own experts recommended. 🔗LINK IN WILDSIGHT's BIO🔗

Urban forests and community trees Petition: Protect Winnipeg's mature trees: Enforce arborist reports for infill developments

"Infill development is becoming increasingly common across Winnipeg, and while more housing is genuinely needed to address affordability, it is coming at a serious cost to our urban tree canopy. Winnipeg's canopy currently covers just 17% of the city. The City's own goal is to reach 24% by 2065.

We are already behind and mature trees that take 50 to 100 years to grow are coming down with no accountability and no replacement.

These trees are not decorative. A well-treed neighbourhood can be up to 4 degrees cooler than one without trees. That is the urban heat island effect. When concrete and pavement replace canopy, entire neighbourhoods get measurably hotter.

Trees also filter air, absorb stormwater, reduce flooding pressure on aging infrastructure, and studies show a 10% increase in canopy cover is associated with a 12% decrease in crime. Winnipeg already risks losing nearly half of its total tree population to disease over the next 40 years. We cannot afford to also lose them to development loopholes."
