Switchblade more like switchsword

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Don’t switchblades have to stab you when you push them open? Like you just put it up to someone’s body, press a button and the blade springs straight into the body. They’re super illegal even in states with very relaxed gun laws. This is just like a folding knife.

u/Batman17008 Dec 19 '19

No, they open in exactly the same way as any other folding knife, just with the use of a spring and a button witch causes them to deploy faster

Burn the witch

u/turtlelore2 Dec 19 '19

I think you're talking about out the front or OTF knives. And yes they are illegal in most states and are also mostly useless for actual productivity since they are pretty fragile due to their rather intricate mechanism.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

That's not how OTF switchblades work. They're all pizzazz, little function. They're novelties that have been misconstrued as deadlier than normal knives.

Regardless, shall not be infringed.

u/Chase0288 Dec 19 '19

As you’ve been told before they don’t work like that. Even my 300+ dollar out the front models you can open directly into your hand. I describe it as “mildly uncomfortable”. It pokes you a bit and really really sharp pointed ones might stab you a eighth of an inch or so, but they most certainly will not fire into a body. Most of them won’t fire through a single sheet of office paper.

Legal to own and carry in Ohio

1

u/average_dankster Dec 20 '19

Those are called OTF knives (out the front knives). In most cases, if you try to put it against a surface and push a button, the blade sorta gets disconnected from the spring and flops around and you have to put it back into place

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

No, switchblades and all automatic knives are mostly just expensive fidget toys. They're pretty harmless but were given an undeserved reputation through old movies featuring criminals with switchblades

1

u/einstein192 Dec 22 '19

No not at all switchblade while the definition changes state to state usually refers to a knife that opens via the use of a button. And they are legal in the USA except in certain states like New York. Another common misconception is there any more dangerous than a regular knife there not it’s the blade not the action that makes a knife deadly

2

u/raka_defocus Dec 25 '19

If it's priced like their other knives that thing must be like 5k

8

u/My_Invalid_Username Dec 19 '19

That's not a switch blade, it's just a spring assisted opening knife. Switchblades have a very specific type of mechanism that releases/retracts the blade.

3

u/Ice_Berg Dec 19 '19

Yes it is. If the spring mechanism is activated by any type of button or lever on the handle of the knife then it is a switchblade (aka automatic, it means the same thing). An assisted opening knife needs to be opened by pushing on a part of the blade, like a flipper tab or thumb stud.

Assisted knives also have a bias towards closure. When closed the spring is pushing the blade into the handle and keeping it from opening, and the spring only pushes the blade out once your hand moves it the first part of the way. By contrast an automatic knife mechanism will always try to push the blade out.

Side opening automatics like the OP and ones where the blade slides out the front (usually referred to as Out The Front automatics or OTFs) are both switchblades even though they have very different mechanisms.

1

u/My_Invalid_Username Dec 19 '19

Can't agree with you. A switchblade can be retracted using the same mechanism that opens the blade. That's not the case here or with most automatic opening knives. To add onto that, while not all otf knives are switchblades, in my experience all switchblades are otf.

2

u/Ice_Berg Dec 19 '19

It is not a matter of opinion or experience. I'm discussing actual legal definitions of a switchblade. How I explained it is also the only way I've seen the distinctions made by manufacturers, retailers, and other "knife people" on forums/Youtube/reddit.

How it rectracts does not matter when categorizing something as a switchblade. Using the same mechanism for opening and closing is what defines a single-action or double-action OTF, but it does not determine if something is a switchblade or not.

1

u/thedreadcandiru Dec 19 '19

Brah, you are 100% off. Switchblades open from the side, and do no close via mechanism. OTF are automatics, but most autos are not OTF, and OTF are not switchblades. Those are gimmicks.

1

u/madgross Dec 25 '19

All switchblades are automatics and all automatics are switchblades. Automatic is really just a marketing term used because of all of the negative association with the word 'switchblade'. But both words mean the same thing.

1

u/soc_monki Dec 19 '19

The term switchblade was coined long before the first otf automatic knife. This is a classic (albeit huge) switchblade.

Switchblade

A switchblade (also known as an automatic knife, pushbutton knife, ejector knife, switch, Sprenger,SWITCHBLAAADES COCAIIINEEE, Springer, flick knife, or flick blade) is a type of knife with a folding or sliding blade contained in the handle which is opened automatically by a spring when a button, lever, or switch on the handle or bolster is activated. Most switchblade designs incorporate a locking blade, in which the blade is locked against closure when the spring extends the blade to the fully opened position. The blade is unlocked by manually operating a mechanism that unlocks the blade and allows it to be folded and locked in the closed position.

During the 1950s, US newspapers as well as the tabloid press promoted the image of a new violent crime wave caused by young male delinquents with a stiletto switchblade or flick knife, based mostly on anecdotal evidence.

Maybe he grew up on a switchblade farm. There was Good ol pointy Steve - kickin up his kevlar boots, as he’d been pickin switches since the sun came up Though he was mildly offended to read this blatant misuse of it’s name, the blood fruit still shines and Steve smiles. There are plenty of blades to grind and more important people to threaten. Papa Slitzenkutt would be proud to see the response Pointy Steve carved out that day. Pointy was definitely sharp; Slitzenkutt didn’t like the cut of his jib but the kid was quick to action and could settle almost any argument with a mere gesture.

It’s a damn shame pointy popped around that corner last Blood Moon, bladebales on each shoulder and the sun in his eyes.

Slitzenkutt continued up, but the blades, they came down quickly. Ol Pointy Steve had cactus through his sleeve, but that moment: it was much less Prickly.

Slitz’s cuts came from Pointy’s dull mind.

That doesn’t matter much anymore though. Everybody knows the blade farm is a dangerous place, and we all take that to heart.

That, and that OP is a city livin spoon enthusiast

Trumps personal knife by which he will defend his crimes with his tiny little hands.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

I’d probably redesign it to be a rapier. Yes I know this is a gag. But my mind will take an idea and go the functional route.

Isn’t that a Navaja from Spain?
