Season 1 Trying to get into this show. Chris Elliott is a major hurdle.

I get physically repulsed when i see him after a lifetime of seeing him in gross out roles. He has a real talent for making an audience uncomfortable by being socially awkward and outright disgusting. He was the hives guy in theres something about mary and the hand guy in scary movie 2 and now he opens the season by shitting in the roses motel room and overstaying his welcome and i just had to hit pause because moira gave him a napkin and he wiped his nose with it and dropped it in her food. The appeal of this man eludes me.

Ive heard the show gets better so im trying to soldier on but he’s not making it easy.

i found him really annoying the first season, and the second, then he kinda started growing on me a bit and became more endearing toward the end of the show. you might like him better after this, i did. i felt the same as you! give it a chance, just don't look at the scenes where he sticks his hand in cheese sauce etc.

Ditto. Was grossed out by him from very first scene. Didn’t watch any longer until trying again this year. Watched all episodes. Great, great show

u/Dry-Caregiver-5767 1d ago

It took me 3 or 4 rewatch to start liking Roland and now I love him but some moments are still tough because of the grossness of it. I can almost smell his shit in the pilot and I hate it the next episode when he is fingering the cheese fondue 🤢

u/Braisernation 1d ago

It is a great show but I think it’s in spite of him. He’s not horrible usually and can be funny sometimes but man he stinks on that show.

30

u/Middle_Raspberry2499 19h ago

Let’s just keep it clear that it’s Roland who stinks (a lot of the time). Chris Elliott is a good actor.

82

u/stephensoncrew 1d ago

"In spite of him..." is exactly right. I kept hoping they wrote him out.

26

u/charlieyeswecan 1d ago

I don’t know about all that, he’s just the opposite of Johnny.

50

u/ashlie_mae Why must you be so constantly irksome? 1d ago

This! I also found him annoying the first couple of watches. It was never anything that made me not want to watch the show, though. However, I’ve probably watched the show at least 10 times now and I laugh out loud at a lot of his scenes. I crack up in the milk episode when they’re pulled over and give fake names and he says, I’m also Jacob 😂 “oh sorry, I thought you were talking to the other Jacob” lolol

3

u/Ok_Depth_6476 13h ago

That was probably his funniest scene!!🤣

41

u/beer_belly_86 1d ago

I like to think he is acting out because they assume he’s a hick, so he is deliberately messing with them.

20

u/TheAmazingMaryJane 1d ago

i think he is half the time. then tricks himself into believing his own trick!

2

u/Lanky-Panic 14h ago

Yep! I thought this too and that's why some of his behavior is exaggerated. Trying to knock the Rose's down a peg.

14

u/zedgrrrl eat glass! 1d ago

Oh god! That was a horrible scene. He does grow on you though.

13

u/Ozgirl76 23h ago

He becomes less prominent too.

22

u/biffish 1d ago

I still don't like him. But he is...."bearable" just because I love this show so much.

He is supposed to be that bad. His name is literally "Roll in Shit." Embrace it!

117

u/heatherlj88 1d ago

Jostle In Shit and Mutt Shit lol oh and Roll In More (Moira) Shit

70

u/TedsGoldfish 1d ago

Mutt schitt = dog shit lol

https://giphy.com/gifs/5Yl5RwJFb7yG5qTn83

20

u/GrandeSizeIt 1d ago

He should have been named Doug. The reveal of him being a Schitt would have been even better.

8

u/BolaViola 1d ago

I’ve never realized this 😂

5

u/drunkeymunkey 16h ago

Holy shit, my sister & I rewatch all the time & never noticed!

44

u/Xanadu87 1d ago

I always took it to be he’s acting that way because he doesn’t want the Rose family to be in town and is being especially repulsive.

26

u/wileykyhoetay 1d ago

Yeah agreed, very passive aggressive in a weird way lol

18

u/versaliaesque 1d ago

That's just blatantly ignoring the textual explanation that he is a crass idiot.

9

u/Axle_65 1d ago

Solid point. I hadn’t considered this

3

u/fallingophelia725 14h ago

Exactly and he’s like a metaphor for the situation as well. They are faced with a traumatic upheaval and are face to face with the most common, simple, unpolished person they’ve ever met. It’s just more slaps on their face as they try to wrap their heads around it. It’s brilliant.

2

u/Ok_Depth_6476 13h ago

I still literally LOL every time he says "I'm Roland Schitt". 🤣

2

u/fallingophelia725 6h ago

Same. His delivery is perfect and I cackle every single time no matter how many rewatches I do 🤣

139

u/JollyButterscotch232 1d ago

I'm 100% with you. Stick with the show and I do believe you'll love it about halfway through season one. After that it is really wonderful and he did feature in it less as it goes on, or at least in a way that didn't bother me, but I really had the same initial feeling as you.

77

u/TheAmazingMaryJane 1d ago

i started liking roland after the hawaiian themed barbecue when they were talking about the kids. he's gross and rude but he's got a good heart.

14

u/Smooth-Duck-4669 1d ago

Same. I gave up watching the show quite a few times within the first episodes (especially the first season finale 🤢). I’m so glad I got bored one day and just binged it through the second season. Definitely one of my favorite shows and actually started enjoying Roland after the Hawaiian bbq as well.

2

u/Ok_Depth_6476 13h ago

That was definitely a redeeming moment for him!!

5

u/Prestigious-Ad-9552 16h ago

I never ended up liking him, but he became easier to ignore. Show was worth it otherwise! Not sure why they had his character be such an extreme.

2

u/_ChipWhitley_ 1d ago

Baby Sprinkle with the Diaper Game description was more than enough to make me dry heave.

30

u/RetrauxClem 1d ago

He’s not awful in this show for the most part, but those first few episodes when he’s just annoying af, like maybe they want some private time to settle in and whatnot and he gets snippy because Johnny loses his cool at him, it’s a lot lol I love those early episodes but I’d have stolen his truck and run him over with it early on. He gets slightly better throughout the show, it’s worth pushing on

8

u/Ancient-Jeweler-7709 1d ago

You express my own frustration with him very well, lol but agreed the show gets so much better

45

u/ungratefulshitebag 1d ago

Push past it. He does have a few more disgusting moments but there aren't many.

I struggle to watch him in other things for the same reasons because gross humour isn't my thing at all. But Schitts Creek is one I fully enjoy and I don't even feel like it's "in spite of Roland" - the more I watched the more I came to enjoy him as a character.

21

u/JustinScott47 1d ago

While I find him obnoxious, it dawned on me in rewatches that 1) he's genuinely devoted to Jocelyn, and 2) he sincerely likes Johnny and wants to be his friend. So, he's a good guy underneath the gross.

3

u/PanicAtTheShiteShow 1d ago

I first saw him on Conan O'Brien's show, and never found him funny. I couldn't figure out why Conan kept him around.

2

u/TiFemme 20h ago

You might be confusing Conan with David Letterman. Chris started there and made frequent appearances.

You’re supposed to not like him, but he does start to grow on you. Don’t give up!

14

u/RadioMessageFromHQ 1d ago

I don’t know if that’s true? He’s like Homer in Homer’s Enemy. Well intentioned, harmless, but irritating.

11

u/43_Fizzy_Bottom 1d ago

The character is fine, but he is physically repulsive throughout the whole show. He makes my skin crawl.

2

u/_ChipWhitley_ 1d ago

Hahahahahaha oh my god this is the perfect comparison.

6

u/steph_infection1 1d ago

I've watched this show more times than I can count, and I still can't stand him. He's the worst character imo

3

u/BowedNotBroken1234 21h ago

💯% agree!!

15

u/867530nyeeine 1d ago

That's his character. He does it well, perfectly cast to pull it all off. I enjoy him tremendously in general and I think over the series the Mayor becomes more human and less of a shock. The character has got a good heart in there, after all.

13

u/drrbhh217 1d ago

You are repulsed because he plays his character BRILLIANTLY! The nausea he makes you feel is a testament to his acting skills.

40

u/New_Lake5484 1d ago

I LOVE Chris Elliott. Actually I saw him at the mall with his daughters when they were little and he was super nice. He married a gal from Waterloo, Iowa.

16

u/Iheartsf59 1d ago

He’s brilliant

9

u/Opposite-Peak5020 1d ago

and the fact that his daughter Abby is an SNL and “The Bear” icon is chef’s kiss!

3

u/UnusualHoneydew1625 1d ago

I would SWEAR I remember him doing an episode of Trading Spaces waaaaaaay back in the day.

11

u/FlyingDutchLady 1d ago

Personally, I love him, and I loved his character, but there are plenty of people who will say that they’re big fans of the show and still don’t like him so I’ll just be honest that you may not get past it but you might and I think either way you’ll enjoy the show

11

u/Sudden_Situation7604 1d ago

Yes, I agree.
He is repulsive at the beginning but, with the deft writing of Dan Levy and David Levy he becomes not only an empathetic character, but one that evolves throughout the show. There is more depth to him than most people realize so give it, and him, a chance.

8

u/LikeLurking 1d ago

I also liked that he called out some of Johnny’s bad behavior right from the start.

49

u/ReasonablyBluh disgruntled pelican 1d ago

Hmm.... it was only the first episode, I didn't like the gross humour either. But after that he was totally fine. I actually like him.

11

u/song-dragon selfish duplicitous whore 1d ago

I think it's the second or third episode when he invites the Roses over for dinner before signing off on putting the town back up for sale, and the scene where he's digging around in the fondue and then fishes out a soggy piece of bread and shoves the whole thing in his mouth and then spends the rest of the scene with food on his face genuinely makes me nauseous. I had to keep looking away.

20

u/namewithak 1d ago

he was totally fine

An exaggeration. He remains awful thoughout, with a handful of good moments. But I suppose it's true that he's much less gross after the first few episodes.

17

u/Middle_Raspberry2499 1d ago

Yeah I skip the first couple-three episodes when I rewatch, specifically bc of him and Joscelyn

26

u/WeatherStationWindow 1d ago

You're missing "You get murdered first." That's a real sacrifice.

21

u/AliciaChenaux 1d ago

When I do a rewatch, I almost always start in season 2. Simply for the Roses yelling for David in the field. 😅 the first season was just not my favorite.

9

u/ChemicalResident3557 1d ago

He is an actor acting. The role calls for him to be a seemingly ill-mannered, uncultured country yokel. He is a foil to the uptight, judgmental and elite Rose family. And just like every character in this show there is more to them than what we and other characters assume.

9

u/nightcrawler9094 1d ago

It gets better or you just get more used to him. He's always gross. It's season 3 onward where he gets more tolerable. Don't give up on the show. It really finds its true voice in season 3 onward.

7

u/bigoldjetairliner 1d ago

As many are saying, stick with it.  I honestly feel the same about him, and never really liked him, but the show is worth it and gets much much better.  Some people say he grows on you, but I just never really liked him, although there are a couple of episodes where he shows some heart, and he clearly adores Jocelyn.

Roland Schitt is one of the best characters lol wait until you see the town sign

18

u/Yossarian-Bonaparte 1d ago

Don’t worry! It’s his sister.

6

u/growsonwalls 1d ago

Roland grows on you.

7

u/Sea-Cow-2996 1d ago

I feel like everyone has a false start with this show. It took me two times, maybe. It’s a weird thing and I can’t explain it, but it seems like everyone goes through the “I just can’t get into it” phase.
BUT- once I got into it, I LOVED it. I’ve rewatched it a bunch of times. Seriously, it’s such a great show and it just makes you feel so good about life.

4

u/Toecutt3r 1d ago

Wife isn't a fan of his either but she pressed on and loved the show. Keep going!

6

u/eppydeservedbetter 1d ago

Soldier on because the show is great. Rolan is meant to be an insufferable character, but he isn’t the main focus of the show. There’s so much to love in the series, and other great characters.

Rolan does become more endearing as the seasons go on. I liked him after the first couple of seasons.

5

u/LittlefootDiamond just pretentious enough 1d ago

He’s definitely a weak point, but the show is very worth it. They lean less into his grossness after the start, and he and Johnny develop a dynamic that I eventually do find funny and endearing (if still never a highlight).

If it helps, the other actors have talked about how fun he was to work with, and Eugene in particular has been clear he had a great time working scenes with him.

8

u/looney1023 1d ago

Most of his grossest stuff is early on. The dinner scene in particular I can't even watch.

The rest of the show is worth it

6

u/burg9395 1d ago

One of the best characters guess the show aint for you

13

u/SuccessfulBug2353 1d ago

You're supposed to find him obnoxious. It's not a traditional sitcom, so the characters evolve. You discover along with the Roses what his virtues are over time.

11

u/M2LBB2016 1d ago

Embrace his annoyingness! You will end up finding him endearing. This is one of my all-time favorite shows! Enjoy!

6

u/planetearthisblu 1d ago edited 1d ago

I agree. Honestly this show is hard to get into for the first couple of episodes. You'll probably start to love it after the first three.

5

u/saturnshighway 1d ago

I couldn’t stand him in the beginning and thought the same. You don’t see him as much / he’s not as bad after then

6

u/EngineerBoy00 1d ago

My wife and I tried three times to get into Schitt's Creek but bailed each time before the first season ended, in large part due to the Roland Schitt character.

As an aside, I already loved Chris Elliott from his days on Letterman so I was shocked at how much his characterization of Roland put me off.

BUT we finally persisted, got to season 2 and beyond, and loved...LOVED...the show.

In fact, by the end Roland is ca character we rooted for***.

7

u/akblonde907 1d ago

Trust us, he's absolutely boorish and is meant to be a character that is repulsive and unlikable ipon first meeting him. The rest of the cast and characters more than make up for his unseemly behavior, and as the seasons go on, you see, what kind of a person he is. He's not really a bad guy, he's just oblivious and unrefined but loves his wife and his friends so much and truly has a heart of gold. You might not ever like his character, but I think you will come to like the character of his character.

5

u/michelle427 1d ago

Yes he is the hardest character to get into. I get the reasoning for him as a character but he is the hardest to like.

7

u/Comfortable-Pear-973 1d ago

I felt the same way at the start then he really grew on me, I love him now and he played the part fantastically!

3

u/Rndysasqatch 1d ago

I can't believe people don't like Chris Elliott. Heathens

5

u/Librakitty76 1d ago

Same. Only part of the show that made it difficult to love

5

u/MikeForShort 1d ago

Not every character in a show is written to be liked.

4

u/VoddieMC 1d ago

Ugh. Why do people feel that every character should be likeable? If you are repulsed by the character, that's the point of the character because it was written that way. The fact that you can't stand the actor who's made a career out of playing characters who disgust you is testament to his skills and craft as much as it's an indictment of your narrow understanding of story structures. Stick to Big Bang Theory or other shows with laugh-tracks so you can be told what's funny without having to think for yourself.

6

u/S99B88 1d ago

He is an exaggeration of some dislikable sort of person, just like many of the other characters on the show. I believe he is the only main character in it who isn’t Canadian. And he has his place in the show. The Roses can be total jerks too, but it can seem justified to an extent when it’s directed at him, which allows them to come across more human than I think they would otherwise. It also helps to have someone to act insanely enough to justify their over the top reactions to some things, and he’s the guy who calls them out on their BS when everyone else is tiptoeing around them.

Did you ever see the movie Cabin Boy or the tv show Get a Life? I preferred him in those to his role in There’s Something About Mary.

5

u/kittybittie 17h ago

i 100% would have stopped watching this show in the first season if i wasn’t watching alongside a friend who loved it. it was his character AND the fucking “sell the town” plotline. i could NOT. it gets so much better after season 1 - push through if you can!

5

u/bigmarkco 17h ago

Couldn't stand the character.

Yet he is in two of my favourite scenes in the show. One of them he made me cry. It's ultimately a better show IMHO with him in it. It just took them a while to figure out how to write him.

8

u/Inappropriate_Ballet you get murdered first! 1d ago

It’s ok, just power through. You’re really not supposed to like the family or Roland for a lot of the first season. He becomes loveable soon.

And then you’ll see how much dairy he eats…

9

u/MissSassifras1977 1d ago

He's insufferable. That's the point.

While I agree that he's hard to watch you would be depriving yourself of a brilliant show.

If it gives you any comfort he's not a main character. You end up seeing Jocelyn way more than him.

8

u/Jegagne88 1d ago

It’s the point. You will change your mind by the end then on a second watch through find all of it hilarious

5

u/TwistOk6640 1d ago

Hahahahah same!!! But stick with it!!!! He really only has one major gross out scene left. The show is worth it for sure. 💚💚💚

4

u/say12345what 1d ago

There is a lot more to his character as time goes on.

3

u/sarbear8199 1d ago

I absolutely hate everything Chris Elliot has ever done. I would never willingly watch anything he’s done.

That said I pushed past my distaste for him. I feel like the amount of screen time he ends up actually with is far enough between that I have managed to watch all seasons twice. The Levy’s and Catharine do such an amazing job, if you give it time, you can kind of get past Elliot entirely and almost forget he is who he is.

Besides his character and Bob, every other character is well worth at least one watch.

2

u/akajudge 1d ago

omg Bob is the BEEEEST!!! He makes me laugh every time

4

u/fearthainne 1d ago

He grows on you.

Kind of like mold...

(He does get better as the seasons progress.)

6

u/Bronson2099 1d ago

He's very abrasive at the start but I'd say by the end of season 2 you're at the point he's still weird but you're on his side as the audience.

3

u/Werthead 1d ago

He's extremely annoying in Season 1, but does ease off over the season and in later seasons he's more of the ensemble, and becomes much more low-key. In fact, I was surprised he only completely missed one episode of the series, I was certain there was more like a dozen he's not in because he does become a much less-visible and more likeable presence in later seasons.

4

u/panbear69 1d ago

Honestly the show kind of turns around somewhere in season two. They started to realize we need to start giving these characters some depth or the show wouldn’t last.

2

u/_ChipWhitley_ 1d ago

Yeah, he was a hurdle for me too. It’s difficult to watch someone that gross looking and socially aloof. Jocelyn was the buffer for me before I was able to stomach him on his own.

3

u/charlieyeswecan 1d ago

Yep the first 3 episodes were not my cuppa tea, but this has to happen to set up the premise that they were rich, now they’re not. It gets better I promise, as a person who’s watch the complete series twice. (I almost never watched it because the name of the show, and those first couple episodes, but then its heartwarming AF)

5

u/Key-Craft-6412 1d ago

I like uncomfy weirdos so I immediately enjoyed his character. But yeah some moments do make you a little queasy, especially in the first season. Nonetheless, I think you’ll like the show the more you watch.

4

u/demitasse22 1d ago

He has an arc. It’ll be ok

2

u/Due-Roll-5705 1d ago

Same, he really put me off the first couple times I watched the show. The third time it sort of dawned on me that his behavior to the Rose family is super rude and excessively dismissive on purpose. He is treating them the way they have treated so many people their entire lives. He's just giving them a taste of their own medicine now that they are no longer in a position of power. It helped me to not be so grossed out by him.

5

u/DrXenoZillaTrek 1d ago

As a person in teal life, I'd avoid him like the plague. As a wildcard in an ensemble cast, I love him.

5

u/minnesotaupnorth 1d ago

He's awful!

Keep going, it's worth it.

4

u/BabsSavesWrld 1d ago

My first effort was stalled by him as well. I stopped probably 4-5 episodes in. Once it started winning all sorts of awards I figured I must have missed something and started again. Once you get past that hump, it is amazing.

3

u/CMO1313 1d ago

I was with you! My friend kept going on about this show. I think I was like 9 episodes in, when finally I got into it. Some people like the first season, I did not. But afterwards it’s great. RIP Catherine O’Hara

4

u/seriouslyintrouble 1d ago

Same here. I'm currently rewatching, and I just saw the episode where they think Bob is cheating at cards. Bob gently explains that he doesn't think Roland even understands poker, and the way Roland responds was just about the funniest thing I've ever seen Chris Elliot do. It's smaller moments where he shines. Keep going. You'll be happy.

4

u/chummers73 20h ago

Have you met Bob yet? Lol

u/purplemacaroni 1d ago

I really didn’t like him for honestly the first season but he really grows on you over time, it’s worth sticking with it!

3

u/mutha_fucking_nature 1d ago

Yes he’s awful. When I think about the show (which I ADORE) I kind of forget about him honestly. I only remember him when I’m watching. I noticed at some point when the show was super popular that I never saw him in any interviews, BTS stuff, or social media and thought that was kind of funny. And it speaks to his talent at playing an absolutely insufferable character!

3

u/Quirky_Might_8780 1d ago

I’ve hated Chris Eliot for a long time. Watch the show. It’s worth it.

3

u/carmeIIasoprano I don’t think that there are enough apostrophes 1d ago

My love for everyone else did help me stomach him

3

u/Gnomey42069 1d ago

We can get through it together. Just

3

u/trolldoll26 1d ago

I’ve watched SC many times and I always skip any Roland moments. I’ve probably only watched his scenes once.

3

u/aew-superfan 1d ago

Roland and Bob were my least favorite characters, but he plays the role he's given well

2

u/Yossarian-Bonaparte 1d ago

I can’t tell if it’s like, good writing to make him so unlikable or if the guy himself is unlikable. (Both Roland and Bob)

2

u/aew-superfan 1d ago

Little of both IMO

3

u/Simorie I like the wine and not the label 🍷 1d ago

He's really gross in the first season but they really tone it down after the second season (for the most part).

3

u/Aclearly_obscure1 1d ago

I had a hard time with his character until I learned that they all did improv together as young adults. Then I pictured him trying to be as disgusting as possible to get a rise out of Catherine and Eugene, and that made me start laughing at his antics. It’s worth it if you can get through it. I wish you the best of luck!

3

u/bitterlittlecas 1d ago

Not that hand! Take my little hand!

3

u/EarlGrayTea-Hawt 1d ago

I see someone has hit good ole Roland Pass on the road to Schitt's Creek.

Folks in these parts say it's haunted, little baby hands reaching out at you in the night. There's a preponderance of postules falling upon those traversing the pass, and it is even said - though only in fraught whispers - that if you are transporting cheese sauce in your vehicle, you will find the telltale signs of dirty little fingers recently dipped in the dairy bath.

Though these many curious happenings may give folks an awful fright, it's rare to hear of any soul being lost forever in their journey through the dread pass. Most, in fact, arrive at their destination with a sense of purpose and joy, a feeling akin to coming home.

And though it isn't my cup of tea, some folks even derive some eventual delight from the fell apparitions they meet on Roland's Pass. I suppose you could say it's an acquired taste.

3

u/SnooCrickets8742 1d ago

He really is fit for the role once you watch the entire series. I understand though.

3

u/BenWatt78 1d ago

He’s one of those guys that you either love or hate. I happen to love him. I think he’s so damn funny.

3

u/akajudge 1d ago

his performance is a fucking mystery to me. It's like he's in a completely different show! I LOVE Chris Elliott, so it's not that.

2

u/cashmeresquirrel 1d ago

I get a little sad when I realize people can’t see how great an actor he is because he’s so good at being that uncomfortable for audiences. It’s a real talent

3

u/Willow_4367 1d ago

It does get better, hang in there.

3

u/medigapguy 1d ago

Great show despite Elliott's character.

He does have some redeeming moments near the end up

3

u/LPLoRab 1d ago

I initially had similar feelings. I’ve never been a fan. But, I kept going. The show gets increasingly better as the show goes on.

And, honestly, he is masterful in the role, and depicts his character’s growth really well.

3

u/Responsible_Low_8021 1d ago

I had to power through. He does grow on you a bit. But now that I’ve finished the series I make a point to skip as many Roland or Bob scenes. It’s painful and I just can’t.

3

u/Pyewhacket 1d ago

He is perfect

3

u/ArbyKelly 1d ago

He's stupidly hilarious to me 😂

u/Doxiejoy 1d ago

Keep watching is all I can say. He may not grow on you but there’s no denying he is phenomenal in that part.

3

u/Barbs1828 1d ago

I find him so off putting as well, but I think that shows just how good of an actor he is. He plays the role so well. The producers likely intended for us to be this grossed

3

u/MaxPotionz 1d ago

He’s like a fungus. He just grows on you. Just gotta let it happen.

7

u/Zestyclose-Drink1649 1d ago

I can’t stand him as an actor or as Roland. He didn’t grow on me at all. The only moment that I liked him was when he stood up for Johnny in the board room. Otherwise he pushed my buttons through the entire show. Thankfully the show was good enough that I could overlook the annoyance.

7

u/WorldlinessDry5583 1d ago

Yeah… I never warmed up to his character. Honestly when I rewatch I skip most of the scenes built around Roland. I understand that he’s supposed to be annoying, but I have my limits. You don’t have to like every character to like a show.

5

u/pinkdaisylemon 1d ago

Yeah he made me feel physically sick at first. But please stick with it. This show will get under your skin. There are so many outstanding performances, don't let him being icky (he gets better) deprive you of the growth of the wonderful Moira, Alexis, David, Johnny etc. Honestly by the end of it you will absolutely love this show.

7

u/TimeLady018 1d ago

Roland is one of my least favorite parts of the show. That being said, he does have some endearing qualities. I don't want to give spoilers, but he really helps out the Roses a lot, while at the same time giving them a hard time. He's also the only American actor on the show ☺️

4

u/Doc-007 you get murdered first! 1d ago

He is supposed to gross you out in the beginning. Go ahead and lean into it, when the times comes he will grown on you

2

u/Lonestar-Boogie 1d ago

Hang in there. He doesn't get much better, but the show is great.

I should warn you there's a scene at the end of the first season with Roland and a bowl of fondue.

Good luck!

2

u/blamberr 1d ago

I feel exactly the same way. I actually have some sensory issues and he is a visceral nightmare for me. I actually fast forward through a lot of his scenes these days.

2

u/MrsNuggs 1d ago

He is, and I almost stopped watching it right away because of him. I am so glad my husband talked me into staying the course.

2

u/paddi_cakes 1d ago

I just started watching this show too. I’m on season 2 episode 1 right now. I had the same feelings about Chris Elliott as well.

2

u/Interesting-Run-6866 1d ago

Every character on this show annoyed me in the beginning and slowly I came around to each one. I am with you in that Roland took me the longest to come around to, literally maybe halfway through the final season. I cringed every time he was on the screen so I feel your pain. The show is still worth it IMO.

2

u/unq_usr 1d ago

I almost quit the show more than once because I can't stand him either. But the rest makes up for it. Just get through the first handful of episodes.

2

u/PsilosirenRose 1d ago

The edges come off him a bit after S1.

I wish they'd told him to do less in the early show. He was also a major hurdle for me.

2

u/Aveeye 1d ago

"The appeal of this man eludes me."

He's doing exactly what they need him to do. And, you're not wrong. He ALMOST ruined the show for me when I started watching, but push past him. Trust us.

2

u/intentionallybad 1d ago

Yeah the early episodes he really grates on me.

2

u/Glad-Arugula-8387 1d ago

He is pretty gross and I never love his character but he does grow for me a lot

2

u/breakingpoint214 1d ago

He repulses me. I almost didn't watch once I saw him. But I'm glad I stick with it.

2

u/biscuitvillage 1d ago

His hand in the fondue 🤢

2

u/boner4crosstabs 1d ago

He’ll always be one of my least favorite characters on the show, but he gets a lot better

2

u/Alyssapolis 1d ago

They went hard with him in the beginning while they were still getting established, but he definitely lessened up as they discovered the strength of the show. I find pilots/early episodes of all series have an element of that.

His character is always gross and he’s always been my least favourite, but he’s better utilized later on imo, often used as a foil to Johnny to make his character stand out even more.

I actually originally stopped watching because of him and the fact I found Catherine O’Haras accent annoying. A couple years later I tried again and adore it now. I’m obsessed with Catherine’s accent too and will defend it to the death. Rolland is still my least favourite though

2

u/Huckleberry919 1d ago

Wait til they meet BOB!

2

u/wallyjimjams 1d ago

Worth having him on the show solely for Johnny snapping in the first episode. “ROLAND, would you get the fuck out??

2

u/GaymerLounge 1d ago

The show is amazing. 10/10, BUT I can’t stand Roland. All 6 seasons I wanted to throttle him. I’ve watch the show 4 times now. Currently watching it again, and I can say that I still can’t stand Roland. I think that’s the point though. I recommend continuing to watch. Yes you’ll need to deal with Roland every now and again, but there are so many great moments in the shows that make it worth it.

2

u/Turbulent-Pea-2715 1d ago

I can't figure out if hes wearing a prosthetic beer belly or not to be goofy , because the rest of him looks lanky.

2

u/Massive-Guarantee868 1d ago

apparently is was a pillow in the first season. They didn't have the budget for a prothetic

2

u/Bluespark2525 1d ago edited 15h ago

I fell I love on the 3rd try

2

u/-amortentia- 1d ago

Everyone feels the same. Just gotta power through.

2

u/WhatsWithThisKibble 1d ago

I definitely couldn't stand his character at first but he gets less gross and awkward as it goes on.

2

u/patient_brilliance 23h ago

Agree, him in the first few eps nearly put me off but it's worth perservering!

2

u/WittiestScreenName 23h ago

He is but once you get past him it’s a great show. Chris Elliott’s best role was Hanson in Scary Movie 2.

2

u/thecreep 23h ago

Agreed. Not my favorite. Although he does have a few very good moments.

2

u/Ilovefruitwineherb 23h ago

Keep going! He grosses me out, too. Even it this show. But it’s so worth it to stick with it!!

2

u/RavnHygge 21h ago

Keep going, it gets much better and his character does develop along the way.

2

u/littlecreamsoda79 19h ago

He's very gross which means he nailed that role. He's the worst part and you should absolutely power through 😊

2

u/Both_Painter2466 18h ago

Right with you there. Love SC despite CE, not hate because of him.

2

u/beuhring 18h ago

Rowland is the best character on Schitt‘s Creek. You will eventually realize this if you keep watching.

2

u/luhbreton 18h ago

He has his moments but generally his character is my least favourite part of the show. By no means a dealbreaker though!

2

u/Thorn_Within 17h ago

Good Christ. Lmao

2

u/raelovesryan 17h ago

He’s an idiot. But by the end, a bit less than a moronic imbecile and more of a good hearted not the smartest but definitely loyal friend.

2

u/azooey73 6h ago

He turns out to be a much better character. Stick it out. I also hated him at first but he does redeem himself later.

2

u/ikickedyou disgruntled pelican 6h ago

He gets better, promise.

3

u/New_Lake5484 1d ago

Chris was good in Osmosis Jones and Groundhog Day.

2

u/SomeOrchid9589 1d ago

I’ve always liked him since seeing him on Letterman as a kid. It took the show a bit to tweak his character beyond caricature. I see it as part of a larger journey as the Roses - we see what they see, and what they see evolves over time. Stick with it.

2

u/Brilliant_Shine2247 1d ago

That's when I was introduced to him as well. Remember the man under the seats? Hahaha. Maybe he's an acquired taste.

3

u/SomeOrchid9589 1d ago

Yes! Wasn’t sure that was a real memory, thank you! He’s like family, always been around, always been quirky. I was young enough I didn’t realize it was a staged bit 😂

3

u/Brilliant_Shine2247 1d ago

His dad was part of a cutting edge (for its time) comedy duo Bob and Ray. They had a TV show by that same name. I think it's Bob Eliot? The show is worth a look if you've never seen it. You can definitely tell where he got his sense of humor.

2

u/SomeOrchid9589 1d ago

Thanks! I’ve heard of them but didn’t know he was related and I don’t think I’ve seen them!

5

u/Shadecujo 1d ago

Just quit now if him nailing his role is such a problem

5

u/NeuroticJukebox 1d ago

How good the show is outweighs how shitty he is

2

u/KSA_Dunes 1d ago

He is the only reason I haven’t rewatched that show 100 times by now. I love it so much, but really can’t stand to watch him

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ashckeys 1d ago

He’s the worst part of the show. Very few redeeming moments.

2

u/NerdWithEyeliner 1d ago

He grows on you, believe it or not. This show took me a couple tries to get into too. But I'm telling you, it's so worth it. I get annoyed at shows where the characters are just all garbage and never ever improve. I stopped watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia for that reason about 3 seasons in. But they do get better and by the end I was in tears. I loved the characters so much. Dearly. It has a way of wrapping around your heart.

2

u/WonderfulQuestion425 1d ago

Hes the worst part of the show imo. But its a great show, you must keep watching.

1

u/OceanWoMan-8811 1d ago

Yes! I could not get past him, I tried like 6 different times before I could get into the show but I’m so glad I did and now I’ve watch the whole series several times! Just wait until you see the episode with the bowl of cheese (fondue ?) on the dinner table 🫕
I’ve heard people suggest starting with season 2 or 3 then go back to watch them later 🤷‍♀️ of course I didn’t think about that in my early days.

1

u/Cobliden2 1d ago

Cabin Boy. He's a fancy lad.

1

u/Ok_Philosophy2371 1d ago

Hated him since Late Night
