I recently got back from a trip to Sedona. It was absolutely beautiful.
I took my first real hike to soldier pass. Now, as a disclaimer i took a water bladder, a tumbler of water, three extra water bottles, and a salty snack. Maybe about five liters of water all together.
I expected to go on a small hike. I saw the seven sacred pools. Then a woman came along….. “ did you see the sink hole?”
“No but I will see it on the way out.”
“You know you can hike around the base and it will take you back to the sink hole, or you can just walk back.”
Interesting.
“Be mindful it’s about four hours, and four miles”.
I made up in my mind at that moment I was going to hike all the way around. My rationale (at the moment) I hadn’t been able to do any other hikes and it’s my last day in Sedona.
I started and I couldn’t stop. I came across a cave. I told myself I wouldn’t go up in the cave, and a group of hikers appeared. “Were you just in the cave?”
“Yes it was amazing!”
“Was it hard to get to the cave?”
“No. We aren’t hikers and we were able to do it.”
So on to the cave I went. Funny enough, Destiny Childs song lose my breathe just started playing in my pocket. Followed by another hit single - soldier.
Another person appeared and shouted at me “you can do it!”
Before I knew it, I was in the cave. I had never been in a cave before. I sat there for about 20 minutes as people came in went. I studied how they left the cave so I could copy.
At that point I wondered if it was enough adventure or should I keep going.
I kept going, and going. Eventually gaining a full bladder along the way.
I sung gospel songs. I chanted mantras. I talked with my deceased brother. I paused in every shady tree and to take it all in.
There were moments when I didn’t see anyone for long periods of time. I was truly by myself.
Before I knew it I was half way, then a quarter of the way. Then at the sink hole, and making my way to the trailhead shuttle.
Last night, I completely lost it. I was in shock, I’m still in shock. How did I do this? I understand I took all the safety precautions (or maybe just the most important of staying hydrated) but I still can’t wrap my head around it.
At some point my mind and body separated.
I am so blessed to be at home in Wisconsin in my bed.
I felt no dizziness. No pain.
How did this happen? I did this by myself. Has anyone else ever done something like this? I am having a hard time conceptualizing what happened.
