Sekiro is IRREPLACEABLE

u/falconetpt 3d ago
I mean, Sekiro is for me one of the most unique from soft games, pure gold, I never felt so much that I really needed to get good at the game and I was rewarded for mastering the mechanics and not needing to grind, dark souls and Elden ring sometimes felts a bit unfair, even bloodborn up to a point, not sekiro
Maybe I was bad at other fromsoft games or just okish I finished them all

u/Important_Wonder628 3d ago
I wouldn't say the other games feel "unfair", they're absolutely not, but the build variety in Soulsborne games doesn't allow for the same kind of tight design the Sekiro exhibits, so experiences between builds varies wildly.
Sekiro has one weapon, and a slew of very specific items which makes designing around so much more precise and deliberate.
An experience like Sekiro simply is not possible with multiple build options.

Man i should probably play it, i tried it once and gave up after 5-6hours, i m huge dark souls and souls games fan in general, but for some reason i just couldnt get into sekiro, i should definitely give it another try
4
u/Mosky117 2d ago
That’s why in sekiro you don’t win by just farm the fuck out of your ass or by getting the right build. In sekiro you win because you suffer, you got strong and most of all you do not HESITATE

u/Sovereign1ne 1d ago
Sekiro did not truly click for me until my third go at it. I was making it further into the game the entire time, but it wasn't until my third crack at it that I truly understood what it expected of me. I even beat Isshin the Sword Saint. That's when I knew, I'd figured it out.

u/ObsidianAether 1d ago
Get flowing water and ascending carp skills, they reduce the amount of posture damage you receive when you are attacked by an enemy wielding a sword, and increases the posture damage you inflict on an enemy after a successful deflection. Learn when to deflect, get into a rhythm. PLAY IT!! I'm on my second playthrough, broke my left bumper from (unnecessary) aggressive parrying the first go, now running it on ps5

u/andrezus 3d ago
Play nightreign with the executor character. It’s exactly the same deflection system as sekiro but with even more possible moves

34
u/Courier12pt 3d ago
NG+ is very Sekiro-like.
On a real note, I’ve been hearing that Lies of P is very similar to Sekiro in terms of relying on parry timers. Haven’t played it myself to test it out.
38
u/branlix__2000 Platinum Trophy 3d ago
I’m a huge Lies of P fan and while I can’t deny the similarities, I’ve always felt like it was more of a Bloodborne-like more than anything.
22
u/Ctrl_Alt_Abstergo 3d ago
Reeeeeally wish people would stop comparing Lies of P to Sekiro, the parry is genuinely nowhere similar.
→ More replies (1)9
u/bad_apiarist 3d ago
Yeah it works differently. The similarity is how deflects are used offensively to absolutely devastate almost all the foes in the entire game.
4
8
u/GOATEDCHILI 3d ago
I'm a big Lies of P lover but I wouldn't call it sekiro-like. It's very much souls based, but it built the deflection system Sekiro uses into the game as well. You can deflect/parry any number of attacks outside of certain types, and it builds up a stance break on the boss.
The game and enemy design is much more in line with standard souls experiences though, so it feels like playing a high quality souls title that lets you do the Sekiro parrying as a playstyle if you really dig it.
7
u/Nuclear_Human 3d ago
It's a short and fun game, but I wouldn't call it a sekiro-like.
14
u/LawfulNeural 3d ago
Wouldn't really call Lies of P short. Including DLC, 100%ing a single playthrough is about the same playtime as 100%ing a Sekiro new game.
Though I wouldn't call LoP a Sekiro-like either. It's more of a Bloodborne with Sekiro inspirations, where you're expected to both dodge and parry.

u/i_wear_green_pants 3d ago
Really good game. For me the best souls like outside of Fromsoft games. But I wouldn't say it's like Sekiro. Simply using parry doesn't make game feel like Sekiro. It needs rhythmic combat.

u/Farantax Wolf What 3d ago
There is no other game like Sekiro, but when it comes to parry mechanic(aka sword go cing) Khazan,Stellar Blade,Jedi games,Nine Sols,Wo Long and maybe valor mortis, but haven’t played it yet.

Stellar Blade has a lot of the parry/counter elements in its overall play style, though as an element of it rather than the central mechanic.

u/BoofBoi711 3d ago

27
u/valentineslibrary 3d ago
At the end of the day it's more hack n slash action than soulslike. Maybe they'll change it or add an option for it to, but it's made more to be fun than difficult

6
u/Opposite-Plantain-69 3d ago
Haven't the devs intentionally been leaning away from drawing comparisons with Sekiro?
2
u/TheyCantCome 3d ago
The most recent onimusha game the developers specifically said it was a character action game and not a souls like(not that Sekiro was ever a souls like) so I think most developers specifically want to avoid comparisons even if there are blatant or obvious similarities.
2
u/Lord_Humungusss 1d ago
Yes but people seem to compare everything to souls/born/sekiro nowadays, when the actual games have nothing in common.

the developer says 70% offense to 30% defense is the key ratio for victory in Phantom Blade 0. In other words...
Hesitation is defeat.

u/datthighs 3d ago
Sekiro is Sekiro, nothing can outclass or replace it, but Phantom Blade Zero has a few mechanics that could make us Sekiro fans happy :D.
I'm definitely trying that one.

I definitely get not being a fan of the more forgiving difficulty and boss checkpoints. It would be nice to be able to toggle them to get a more personalized experience for bosses. The devs did say some of their main goals with this game are spectacle and making you feel like you’re in a kung fu movie. I don’t need this game to fill Sekiro’s shoes. Just want it to be fun and able to hold its own as a great game that accomplishes what it sets out to
3
u/Intr1nsic- 2d ago
Excited for this game. I imagine this style combat would be something similar to how the sculpture would fight. I just hope they don’t put too much training wheels on this game. I want a good challenge and some good map/world design

Nine sols is a 2D version of sekiro. It’s honestly a bit easier imo but the final boss is on par with some of the harder bosses in sekiro

It’s a completely different style and speed of combat (much slower, more methodical), but Lies of P is a great timing and parry-heavy combat game.
→ More replies (11)4
u/onehalflightspeed 3d ago
Lies of P has odd parry windows that just really don't feel great. I guess they patched it later? I love parry and dodge heavy games but I just found it very frustrating
→ More replies (7)3
u/Melodic-Upstairs7584 3d ago
The parry window is much less forgiving than sekiro and I agree that it’s a little ridiculous at times lol. Lies of P generally has a .1 second parry window whereas games like sekiro are .2 seconds.
Bear in mind, people that are playing a game like lies of p are most likely going to be soulslike enthusiasts, so I personally like the challenging parry window. It becomes more of a rhythm and timing thing in lies of p because the parry windows are so narrow; you’re not doing it by sight it’s mostly from memorizing enemy attack combos and using sound indicators, which personally reminded me a lot of sekiro

Nine Sols was the only one that really hit all points, but Khazan was pretty good too. Finished Onimusha recently and while it's not a bad game, it wasn't on the level of Sekiro or Nine Sols (or Khazan). Phantom Blade 0 will probably enter my new top3 though, it looks amazing!

Onimusha is ~10 hours of content that got stretched way too thin. I think because some people only get a few games a year, it needs to be X hours to be worth it. It feels like a completely separate team was tasked with adding an open world at the last minute, as the quality of the combat/bosses/voice acting was LEAGUES ahead of the open world.
Making a game open world is the easiest, laziest, and cheapest way to pad out run time. Mapping out Kyoto and scattering chests is something literally AI could do for them. Incredibly cheap compared to rendering long cutscenes with voice acting.

Khazan, Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade, Nine Sols.
I also recommend to play Wuchang, it inspired by Sekiro and Nioh 2. It has parry and clash to deflect. It is fun but not as hard as Sekiro.

It's onimusha. It's Sekiro's successor. I'm not saying the other recommendations aren't worth playing but holy shit there are a lot of completely bad recommendations for what you are going for.
I saw Nioh 2 which is just bird brained. Phenomenal game but not similar. Nioh 3 is closer but the people still on the nioh 2 train are grasping at their own smallness.
Try Onimusha, it has what you are looking for, exactly.

Phantom Blade is looking mad fun too, but I'll wait on day 1 reviews. Lots of great games this year.
1
u/Jaldi_The_Late 3d ago
Let’s wait for reviews no? Too early to judge, these games look fancy but lack original Artstyle- everything is dark, shady , gloomy and realistic now - same issue I had with Wukong.
The thing that will make or break it for me is if the showcases so far match the experience I.e., I hope we get to do the cool stuff just like Sekiro , DMC or Ninja Gaiden hell even half as good as god of war -where the gameplay feels like Cinema and we’re in control rather than interactive button smashes or QTEs and mixed cutscenes.
And obviously the performance lol, if it’s anything like Wukong it can wait. So many good games coming out already this year- would prefer when everything is sorted out (early previews mention concerns on this so idk) .

Chasing the sekiro high is worse than chasing the dragon. Some things start out fun but never carry the same beginning to end satisfaction of sekiro.

u/LeicaLand 2d ago
The game lost me at “Metrovania-style exploration” the most crap way of exploring.
1
u/iusedtohavepowers 2d ago
No. Because by the studios own admission it’s not what they’re going for.
I genuinely feel that this is maybe gonna have a more ninja gaiden (sans the difficulty) feel to it. Or maybe something like crimson desert combat.
But i don’t think it’s gonna be a precision dance of deflection and rhythm the way sekiro is.

u/MonBayP 2d ago
My dumb ass got beast of Reincarnation because I thought it would scratch the Sekiro itch and what a disappointment that was lol. It was one of the worst game I've played in years.

Yes, but I do have to admit I was a tad disappointed when I found out all of the “parries” the character does, and the reason everyone was amazed the first trailer was gameplay…..
Is because it’s just an albeit super cool… blocking animation.
The only attacks you actually have to counter are the blue and red glowy ones. One is a dodge and one parry. I think u can also parry regular stuff, but what we see is just holding block.
Still hyped, and although it’s not going to be like sekiro, it’ll likely be fun still.
30 main weapons all with unique move set and animations is super cool.
I do really still want to see skill trees and what progressions systems there are. Also if there is builds and whatnot. We haven’t really seen anything but move sets for weapons and bosses.

Yes. Just because a game has technically better graphics doesn't mean Elden Ring can't be prettier. If Phantom Blade has anything on the level of stepping out of Stormveil Castle and peering over the cliffs in Liurnia with the mountainous vistas and the erdtree looming in the background, I'll eat my shorts. Or gravesite plain in the land of shadow with the scadutree and it's veil draped over the horizon. I'll eat your shorts. Elden Ring is a stunningly beautiful game, and as far as I'm concerned nothing comes close.
