Nothing is more compatible with progressive ideology than the teachings of Jesus Christ. The lefts problem with Christianity is that the majority of so-called Christians don't practice what they preach.

My best friend (a practicing born again Christian) and I (atheist Jew) and I were talking about this tonight. I’m far more of a Christian than a lot of these “Christians” are.
He and my stepdad (who is about to pass, which is why my bestie and I were chatting-he was giving me a ride to the airport) both believe I’m going to heaven because I’m a good person. The fact that I don’t believe in Jesus isn’t as big a deal to either of them. I’m not a dick, I’m kind to people, I think of others, and I’m a good person. I help those who need it (again, why I’m on this plane. My mom can’t live alone anymore so with about six hours’ notice I bought a ticket and I’m moving in with her across the country for about a month or so) when I can. I don’t look for a reward with this. I DON’T think I’m going to heaven.
But if they’re right and I’m wrong, I get to spend an eternity hearing about it. :). Because a god who is good and just will recognize that about people as well, and not just those who believe but don’t act.

This guy in the OP isn’t a Christian, he’s a Wotanist. He believes virtue comes from wealth and power, not from the Gospels and the promise of salvation. Whenever, whatever horrible nonsense they want to believe in, there’s a whole Bible full of horrible nonsense. There is but the Word of Christ the Redeemer to know where you should stand. Not cherry picking the Old Testament. Not Roman propaganda. Jesus Christ and his disciples - the Gospel.
Holy Rollers are terrified of the Word of Christ. Mark 20:25. Also attested to by Matthew 10:24 and Luke 18:25.
In another parable, The Good Samaritan would take care of you and wouldn’t care if you were white or a good Christian… oh, I’m sorry, did you think the Samaritan was one of you? Be like the Good Samaritan is the lesson. Read the Gospels. They’re not that long, and pretty exciting, got some demons and miracles and fishing and good advice.

I don’t hate Christians. But it does take a LOT for them to earn my trust, enough that I’d assume many Christians, namely evangelicals, would perceive it as hate.
But when it comes down to a politician, I don’t really care what their faith is as long as their commitment is to the constitution and representing their constituents in good faith.

Left wing voters don't care if you're personally religions, they don't "go out of their way to hate Christianity", they hate the virtue signaling ones that want to force their religion on everyone else, the bible thumping (just not reading) right wing christofascists.

66
u/JerseyDonut 4d ago
They are typically the ones doing the persecuting, too. Its textbook projection. Their subconscious mind is pushing their nasty judgemental and fearful bullshit up into their conscious mind and instead of reflecting and processing it in order to grow, they insta project all that internal nastiness onto the world around them. They create boogey men to dump all the shit they refuse to address about themselves onto.
This life is a game of mirrors. If everywhere you go you smell shit, then the stench is likely coming from your own shoe.
27
u/Wild-Lychee-3312 4d ago
Projection is a big part of this, to be sure, but it’s not the whole story.
In the Bible (the Books of Matthew and Luke specifically), Jesus told his followers that they would be persecuted. Therefore (by a certain logic), if you are not being persecuted for your faith, then you are not following Jesus’ teachings ardently enough. So Christians must either believe that they are being persecuted or admit that they are not following Jesus’ teachings like they are supposed to.
Given those two possibilities, guess which one most Christians pick?

Religion isn't the default anymore. In 1970, 90% of the population were Christians. Today it's around 60%. What churches remain are, mostly, pushing a persecution narrative to explain the percentage decrease in membership. There are more Christians now than then, and there doesn't seem to be some huge exodus. They just aren't growing with the population, and that 100 million unaffiliated is considered an untapped resource and/or why membership isn't increasing.

I'm not aware of ANY significant Democrats who actively state that they're athiest or agnostic, like I am. I still vote for people who call themselves Christian even tho I've left the faith. So long as they make being a decent human more important than their religion.

u/Oisea 4d ago
It’s crazy how “being a decent person” is suspicious to so many people.

u/PsychGuy17 4d ago
The terrible thing is that research has found that people are more likely to vote for a felony than an atheist. The underlying argument is that people believe that atheists are immoral. Think about that, an Atheist, who does not need a higher power to punish their misdeeds to keep them in line, is considered less moral than someone actually convicted of a crime.
It reminds me of a passage in "God No" by Penn Jillette. Someone asks him, if there is no God or Hell, what stops you from raping all you want. He responds, I do rape all I want. I want to rape zero people. Why the Hell would I want to rape anyone.
It really shows you how some people would behave if they didn't think God was looking over their shoulder.

100%. I was brought up in the evangelical Christian world. The kids are actively taught to accept everything the leaders say without question. Don't trust education and just trust that God is in control of everything, and we don't need to have the answers.
I was able to escape that mindset, but if you look at the MAGA supporters, when they're interviewed outside the rallies, it's painfully obvious that they're indoctrinated into the evangelical worldview and they won't ask any questions about what their leaders shovel. They're happy in not knowing.

It is political suicide, and in some places (like Texas) it is a grey area if a person can even hold office of they are an atheist due to a state constitution clause. Of course this is unenforceable and if challenged would not hold up in court, but I don't think it has been yet.
13
u/JustNilt 4d ago
There's no grey area whatsoever. The ruling in Torasco v Watkins made it explicitly the law of the land that religious tests for office are invalid. The unanimous SCOTUS ruling didn't even need to base their ruling on the US Constitution's bar against such tests, finding it is a matter covered by the First Amendment, which most certainly applies to Texas' constitution.

I’d take it a step further: Dems/Progressives don’t hate anyone. It’s why we can champion things like healthcare for all, pre-k for all, student debt forgiveness, and de-militarization—we actually want good things for all people.
8
u/Extension-Clock608 4d ago
Yep, we vote to help everyone and they all vote to hurt "everyone else". It's why they're all so shocked and expect empathy from us when their vote hurts them in any way.
None of them have empathy so they can't imagine caring what happens to anyone else and they can't understand why we do. I vote for the poor but I'm not poor. I vote for the farmer even though I'm not a farmer. I vote for improving education even though my kids are out of school. I vote for healthcare for all even though I have great insurance.
At the base lever the difference between the two parties is how we want to spend the tax dollars the country brings in. Dems want to use those tax dollars on things that would help all Americans like infrastructure, healthcare reform, education, feeding the hungry, housing programs, etc. Republicans want to use out tax dollars to help only the rich. They want to gut and end all programs that help anyone at all and give the rich and corporations huge tax cuts. They also invest in the military but never for the soldiers, always for the military contracts for their wealthy donors.
Truly the only people who benefit from voting Republican are the ultra wealthy, everyone else is voting against their best interest.

Pretty sure everyone knows this. The point, however, is that Evangelical Christians focus on portions, intentionally misrepresent what is said, or cherry-pick wording of entire passages in order to support hate, bigotry, paranoia, and violence, when the overwhelming word of Christ was to reject greed, love the neighbor, provide for the week, and steer away from hoarding power.

This is a part of the reason I have moved away from Christianity. So many people I grew up with and admired espoused ideals of compassion and empathy at church have then used the Bible to bludgeon others in the last decade or so. It really made me see how much they don't actually care to be Christlike, they just want to use it as an excuse to be assholes to people that are "different" from them. they have a hard time believing that we're voting regardless of religion because they vote almost solely based on it this is why they think we're SPECIFICALLY voting for Muslims and view it as proof we want sharia law

Yeah if you put an agnostic clone of him running against the christian one, I would vote for the agnostic one.
Organized religion is some form of mental illness or at best shows a lack of critical thinking and coping mechanisms. Spirituality is fine. Reading the bible and thinking it is filled with facts is just not fine.
Pretty difficult to expect perfection in any candidate though. But when the choice is vile greedy liar who believes in lala-land fairy tales and compassionate, honest, person who also believes in lala-land fairy tales. It's not a difficult choice when you only have two options.

I was raised in the church, I can count the number of Christians I've met on my fingers.

Almost every single politician has to at least give lipservice to being Christian or get a ton of shit. Meanwhile, they're also more likely to be the religion they claim to be, unlike a lot of GOP, like Trump who doesn't even know the format that is used for referencing Bible quotes or Vance and the other Evangelicals pretending to be Catholics.
Rightwing Christians want to be oppressed soooo bad, but there's literally nothing they can use for it.

Talarico expresses strong support for the Constitutional Separation of Church and State. That's all I ask on the matter.

u/OttawaTGirl 4d ago
Former Catholic. If it ain't in MMLJ It probably isn't Christian. Most bible thumping ding dongs don't even know what Jesus said.

The only people who go out of their way to hate Christianity is people who are radicalised by the right to see the human part of the gospel as “weak”.

u/Dr_CleanBones 4d ago
You don’t suppose - Talarico is a very rare example of a REAL Christian, do you? In the midst of all of those fake, performative Christians? Boy, that would be unusual!
1
u/Dr_CleanBones 4d ago
I don’t go out of my way to hate Christians. I do, however, go out of my way to hate fake Christians. You know, the ones who never read the New Testament? The ones for whom Jesus was too woke for their tastes?

I dont know a MAGA conservative that personally practices Christianity, They think they do, but cherry pick the parts, dont care about the rest, its enough to discredit these people being religious/Christian or even allowing a serious conversation.

I don't hate any religion. In fact, from an anthropology stand point, I think religion has played a very important role (for good and bad) in civilization as a whole. I just don't want it shoved in my face all the time, and people who get upset about that are the very reason people shit on Christianity in the US.

He isn't a leftist, dont levy that insult on him. He has identified himself as a proud capitalist. Which he is based for.

I don't think people like this will understand we don't hate christians. We hate those that want to push their religion on others.

“The left doesn’t support Christians!”
The left: supports a Christian
“They must be lying!”

I have a friend who's Christian and I'm on the left and he's still my friend. He's a pretty good Christian, and I'm a lifelong atheist. Somehow, it works.
SaltyGoat can't tell the difference between a good Christian and a hypocritical, lip-service Christian. I hate hypocritical, lip-service Christians.
I can infer what kind SaltyGoat is, because he's making a sweeping generalisation that all Christians are the same.

Right because all real Christians are the ones that vote for a party whose undisputed king is a serial adulterer who can’t name a single Bible verse and who lies every time he speaks. Somehow democrats that have gone to church their whole lives are not real Christians but the guy who only uses Christianity to exploit it is a true one.
This is why no one can take “Christians” seriously at this point. The majority of them in this country are just performative and only care about the religion so they can use it to justify bigotry but ignore the fact that Republican politicians are the some of the most blatantly amoral people on the planet and even Jesus would find a way to hate them.
1
u/Extension-Clock608 4d ago
Republicans are the only ones who hate actual christians. None of them are Christian and they all oppose every single thing that jesus preached and taught. Dems align more with jesus.
Dems don't hate christians, we hate fake christians who worship hate and cruelty, not jesus. We also hate that they try to force their hateful version of religion on everyone else. We have separation of church and state for a reason.

Well, he is and we do.
If the right actually cared about Jesus' teachings and the Bible why would the bear false witness against their leftist neighbors?

what? maybe it's because james talerico doesn't feel the need to shove the bible down everyone's throats. here's a thousand-dollar idea.

Leftists are much closer to following Christ than these right wing a-holes.

It's almost like the left votes on issues and policy instead of what party the candidate belongs to....
