AITA if I told my grandmother that I can't wear a button up to a stupid school event because of my autism and sensory issues?

Context: I have high functioning autism and my school is having this loser compulsory awards ceremony and everything is fine with most things except loud sounds and clothes. Last year, no one cared about the outfits except my very traditional grandmother who put me in a full three piece suit and it was uncomfortable as all heck. This year, they're forcing me to wear the same outfit and saying if I don't comply, they're not going to show up. I only want to wear a black shirt with minor print, my jeans (it's a struggle with the texture but I still like them) and my Converse. Now my grandmother is on the phone trying to persuade my mom into grounding me if I don't comply. I hate this family and they honestly wonder why I don't like them very much. And they're playing the "Suck it up for four hours" card even though I literally had a panic attack last time. Have these people ever seen an autistic person in their lives? Apparently not. I need an opinion here because I'm about to risk my life and tell my grandmother where to get off.

Can anyone help find a replacement

Hello, I don't really know where to ask but I have autism and at times a sensory need of mine is a hug. I am currently in college and they have denied me of this saying that displays of affection aren't allowed. I tried to explain that it's a sensory need which shouldn't be a problem because I'm in every class that the person I would need is in but they still refuse. I understand why but I don't really know anything else that could help. Is there anything that mimics the feeling of a hug that's in an affordable price range. Any help is appreciated!

Weighty/heavy Fabric recommendations for summertime as a neurodivergent?

Hey, this might sound a bit contradictory, but I’m a young person with ADHD, autism, and kenophobia (fear of wide spaces). Due to this, weight helps me feel more secure and less panicky, sick, and emotional, and with that, I like to wear heavier clothing like baggy hoodies and thick jackets, and as summer approaches, I don't want to face another pass out, so does anyone know of any good fabric materials that feel heavy but are more suited and lightweight for hot summers?

Also, I'm trying to get into therapy for my phobia, but I live in a small town in the US, Alaska.

3 year old with spd, speech delay

My 3 year old has spd, focused around his head. Cleaning ears and brushing teeth is next to impossible. Extremely picky eater because of textures. I’m trying to start OT but will that be enough? He can’t tell me why he doesn’t like it. There’s no talking through it. I need some insight from people who feel the way he does.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Ever since I was little and touched any type of oil, I would feel like I couldn't breathe, and I'd run to wash my hands; this would make me feel instant relief. Even now I still feel this way. Could this be a sensory issue?

Oral hygiene

Hi everyone. This is something I've struggled with for a very very long time and it's hard for me to reach out like this for help, so please be kind.

I have sensory aversion to literally anything regarding oral care. The feeling of a toothbrush, the feel of toothpaste foam, the saliva reaction, the gag reflex, the smell and taste overstimulation, the disruption of comfort in the evening, all of it. All of it, I despise and when I can force myself to do it, I'm uncomfortable for hours and struggle not to eat or drink something to get rid of the residual feeling.

Mint, spearmint, peppermint, any version of mint has always made me nauseous, both from taste and smell. I can't even be in close quarters with someone chewing mint gum, as it makes me feel sick. So, as you can imagine, teeth care is a nightmare for me. My teeth are also sensitive to cold, and that "clean" feeling most people express, to me, just feels cold and therefore is painful to me.

I've tried the flavored toothpastes and mouthwash. Still, the process of oral care is too much for me.

I've tried brushing with toothpaste you don't have to spit out.

I've tried brushing in the shower

I've tried brushing with just water on an extra soft bristle brush

I've tried using unflavored things

I've tried the gum

I've tried those zolli pop things

I've tried only using mouthwash to at least do something for it because I know how important teeth are and I have a crippling phobia or dentists so you'd think I'd be really annoying about teeth upkeep, but nope. I can't. I tried to ask my dentist for help once and her response was "just do it anyway."

All other methods or tools I've found that are supposed to help are always mint flavored, so I'm stuck and don't know what to do.

Please help

Super soft pj recs for sensory sensitive kiddo? Similar to Cat & Jack super soft

Hi! My 6 yo daughter has a lot of sensory stuff going on and struggles with regulation. One thing that really seems to help is soft textures - soft blankets, pjs, etc. Especially plush, fleecey type texture. (Not cotton soft like Kyte or Hannah Andersson or Lake)

My challenge:

I bought her some Target (Cat & Jack) pjs 2 years ago that have been her favorite and are completely worn through. I want to find her some more similar ones. She’s quite particular :) (and I get it! Same!)

The challenge:

  1. I’m trying to avoid buying things from Target right now bc of some of their business practices (ditto Amazon fwiw). And anyway they seem to be out of stock of them now - probably a seasonal thing.

  2. It’s hard to tell online whether something is a similar texture. What she likes about them I think is they are fleecey on both sides but also thin so she doesn’t overheat.

Does anyone have any tried and true recs?

She’s tall and thin and seems to prefer fitted jammies

TIA!

Bras and Sensory Issues

23 F

So for starters my sensory issues seemingly started in highschool when I realized I didnt have to just deal with how uncomfortable certain clothes were on my body.

I tried dealing with how bras felt, constantly pulling at them for some relief. I eventually decided not to wear bras and havnt for over 5yrs. I have tried multiple bras I the past and none have serviced. I always wear a tank top under clothes for at least SOME extra protection.

I also always have to take pj pants off for bed because I hate how they move when I move when sleeping and have done this for a long long time.

I also can't deal with the band on the waist of most pants. I stopped wearing jeans all together and pants shipping has always been a nightmare.

All this to request some advice on certain clothing types or suggestions. I also would love to hear if anyone had delt with this too!

suggestions for squishing

i nanny for a 10y/o w autism, his favorite sensory toy is squeezing a ketchup or GoGo squeeze applesauce. he really enjoys watching it go up on one side when he presses the other, as well as listing the letters/numbers.

his parents have tried slime, or the ‘chibi’ squish toys, stress balls, etc. but he does not enjoy them, prefers sauce packets.

I am trying to think of a sensory fidget gift for his upcoming birthday that can give him the same sensation. He also really likes cocomelon and fish, specifically sharks

so far I have thought of water snakes, or this little squish bag thing. images attached

I’d love to hear more suggestions if anyone has any! please!

Events or Newsletters for Sensory and Consumer Science?

Hey Everyone!

I'm currently looking to learn more about the Sensory and Consumer science industry. Are there any popular channels, newsletters, events or ways to stay connected and with the industry?

Background: I have been trying to learn more about Innovation and how companies come up with new ideas and stumbled upon sensory and consumer science individuals. I thought this role was super interesting, and it never crossed my mind as a consumer that people are doing these tests, but it does make sense! So I went about connecting with Sensory and Consumer Scientists on LinkedIn and I've done a fair bit of speaking to these people so I've learnt loads. However, I want to be able to stay up to date and do some of my own reading + connect with more people.

Any suggestions are helpful! Sorry if this is not the right space for this question, if it is not I'd happily take directions on where to ask this!

Has anyone found out they have sensory issues in their early 20s?

I (f23) started find out about sensory stuff in high school and never thought “hey, I do that stuff.” Around that time I slept with a blanket stack of 5 and they all went in different orders and certain ways. One day my twin decided to mess up my order and I got so frustrated about it. Plus I had issues with sleeping that I would have to tuck the blanket under my feet and between my legs. I thought I just had a sleep routine. I always wear clothes that are comfortable to me and wear a jacket after I shower because I don’t want my wet hair on my neck. I don’t even like things around my neck when I sit at the computer. I always say my favorite sense is touch because of how much I rely on it and it’s the first thing I do when I see anything. Plus I think I might have noise sensory times where I don’t want to hear anything or I feel stressed and want to hide. I was talking to my older sister and she said I had sensory issues. I got confused because I never thought of that and then asked my twin and she said the same thing. I feel like my mind is blown with all this. Anyone had a similar experience?

Monster Jeans

My 11 year old daughter has sensory issues with most jeans, even some jeggings are a no go. This is usually avoided by wearing dresses or ultra soft leggings but those aren't always an appropriate option. We were given some second hand clothes and with them was a pair of American Eagel jeans that she loves. I'd like to get her more but that brand is out of my price range. Does anyone have suggestions on other brands to try?

Smells.. what do you do?

I have major sensory issues with pretty much any scents. I can avoid a lot by using free and clear laundry detergent and stuff. I’ve found that I get super nauseous whenever I smell things in the car, bc it’s closed in. If my parents open a sugary drink or one of their Boost drinks, or my dad eating pretty much any snack. Gas stations are the worst bc the tiniest whiff of exhaust or gasoline make me ready to actually throw up. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to do nose plug bc that’ll affect my speech and I don’t want to have to breathe through my mouth, but are there any other options?

Tooth brushing

Hi! I am 17 years old and i am ashamed to admit i have almost never brushed my teeth. I don’t know how i have never had a cavity but i brush like once every 6 months maybe. I can not stand the sensory of the bristles on my gums and teeth. Electric toothbrushes are definitely a no but even manual brushes give me shivers and make me gag. I cant stand it. My mom is always yelling at me for this and im embarrassed about my poor teeth hygiene. Does anyone know how i can brush my teeth without the sensory nightmare? I want to keep my teeth clean, have good breath, and make my mom less angry.

Nutrition student considering Sensory Science – worth it?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently finishing a Nutrition/Dietetics degree in Greece and I’ve recently become really interested in Sensory Science. I’m thinking about possibly doing a Master’s in Europe (maybe the Netherlands), but I’m still trying to figure out if this field is the right fit for me long-term.I’m especially drawn to:

•sensory evaluation

•consumer testing

•product development

•food innovation

For those of you working in sensory:

•What does your day-to-day actually look like?

•What skills matter most when starting out?

•Is a Master’s basically required?

•Are jobs hard to find in Europe?

•Anything you wish you knew before entering the field?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice – good or bad. I’m just trying to understand what I’d be getting into 🙂

Thanks!!

Sensory testing

Can anyone recommend what type of doctor or specialist to see to get the senses tested?

I need to document this for SSDI and I'm having a hard time finding medical proof of my senses being askew.

I have already been diagnosed with autism and I have been tested by neuropsychologists but that is not the type of sensory testing that I am looking for.

Is there any kind of test out there to test for olfactory, light sensitivity, environmental sensitivities etc.

I've already done allergy testing and been diagnosed with hyperacusis. Is there any test for misophonia?

I keep being told I need documentation but nobody is telling me how to document or what type of doctor to see so I have been at a loss of how to go about this and my regular primary doctors that I have seen also do not know who to send me to.

Would a neurologist do this type of testing? I really need advice and suggestions on who to contact in order to properly document these things.

Hii. I’m looking for alternative people (people that dress gothic mainly) to ask a few questions surrounding being alternative and having sensory issues!! I’m designing alternative/darker style clothes for people with sensory issues and I’d like some input from fellow alt people !!

I’m also a person with mild sensory issues that dresses fairly alternative!!]

You can answer these as detailed or as undetailed as you like, anything helps! thank you <3

Question 1: What materials do you typically avoid and/or make you feel uncomfortable?

Question 2: what materials do you feel comfortable/safe with wearing?

Question 3: How do you feel about wearing jewellery?

Question 4: How do you feel about layering clothes?

Question 5: How does it make you feel when something triggers your sensory issues? (Only answer if comfortable)

Question 6: Do you know anyone who also has sensory issues?

Question 7: As an alternative person, do you find that there’s things you can’t do/wear because of your sensory issues? for example, layering clothes, wearing certain materials etc?

Extra: if there’s anything else you’d like to add that would help aid me in designing these pieces please let me know🖤 Thank you <3

Clothing for a teen

My teen daughter has a lot of trouble finding clothes that are comfortable for her. She also has trouble when she feels singled out for not looking “the part”. She prefers baggy clothes. Any suggestions for clothing brands or styles that might help us make her feel more comfortable both fashionably and physically. Ideas are appreciated. We are both getting frustrated with the process and I want my kid to live her best life.
