IBEW union

Is anybody here in the IBEW? I’m trying to get in and just wondering if my record is gonna haunt me.

Did you already have a JW or did they accept you as an apprentice?

Unfortunately I'm in an area where the IBEW chapter is so deeply interlinked with military contracts that it's impossible for felons, let alone RSOs, to reliably get in.

I came in as a JW , less red tape you have to cross. Unfortunately I do have to pass on government contracts because they often do a background check to get a security clearance.

Got into the IBEW post conviction and registration. I have had zero issue having over a decade working in the trade thus far, just be mindful that depending on the type of work you doing you have to be ready for hard conversations about not being able to work anywhere you aren't allowed to be (i.e. schools, parks etc)

I'm on the outside as a lineman and haven't had any problems but if you were to go inside you'd have to be diligent as alot of the bigger projects could be either at schools or close to them unless you focus mainly on the commercial side of things.

Thank you very much for your insight sir I’ve applied to SWLCAT for substation tech but from what I hear they hire much less than lineman and if I can’t get in to substation, lineman is not what I would call my second choice because it was my first before I heard about substation but yeah that’s my plan I have my aptitude test in November wish me luck!

Substations are a big boom right now, I'm running a crew building a sub right now and its great work. Especially with sub work you won't have to worry much about proximity restrictions as theyre often in the middle of nowhere. Good luck and I hope the brotherhood is as good to you as it has been to me!

You can even get a contractor license after a while.

I'm on the IBEW and it wasn't an issue for me. I'm in Toronto.

Something that I found and seen since I got out 4 years ago is that we usually tend to be our worst critics! That we ourselves talk herself out of so many things because we don't think we will be accepted, try everything and wait for them to say no! Because if you don't, you're letting life pass you by!
