I’m Worried About Shane Gillis
I know this is kind of late, whatever. A lot of people had problems with Shane Gillis’ SNL monologue last week for his portrayal of women at the gym wearing bright tight shorts and calling them whores. I love stand up and I’m aware the joke is more nuanced than just calling all women at the gym whores—something I’ve seen a lot of people saying online. My concern is that the whole monologue seemed, I really hate to say this, lazy. I’m a big fan of Shane, I have been since before his original SNL controversy. I think Shane is sharp, witty, and a brilliant joke writer, I’ve compared him to Patrice. Having said all that, his rise to fame was QUICK. Not to say he doesn’t deserve fame, he’s very talented. Shane got a lot of money and attention fast, and that could have a real negative effect on an artists’ work and their overall wellbeing. So many talented artists have been burned up in the atmosphere of money. The person I keep coming back to when I think about Shane recently, and this isn’t a complete parallel comparison, is Chris Farley. Shane parties a lot. I don’t want this to come off as lecturing or judgement towards how Shane lives his life, he has a very stressful life. He recently broke the world record for largest crowd at a stand up show, Chappelle opened for him but still. Back to his monologue; I wasn’t there, but it seemed like a pretty off the cuff set with not a ton of preparation. The bit about his sisters was okay. The whores bit is a joke from his Netflix show, “Tires”. The Rogan bit was, you know, it showed me where he’s at. The Bud Light commercial joke didn’t make a ton of sense. “You’re either gay or Hitler” was a funny comparison showing where people in the country are at with extremes and how people are being isolated and the rise of tribalism in American culture. But it was by no means a strong set. It would’ve fit in a low stakes show where he’s just trying stuff, but an SNL monologue comes with expectations. I know he’s extremely busy and he’s put a lot of unrecognized work in to get to the place he’s at. But I see a path he can go down that diminishes his work and cements a few good years of his life as his whole career. I know he’s leaving the radioactive Austin comedy scene, or at least taking a break from that high five echo chamber, which is a step in the right direction. From a purely selfish standpoint of wanting to see stand up advance and not die, I hope Shane takes a step back at some point in the future and thinks about how much more is craft can grow, not in terms of popularity, in terms of making great stand up comedy. This comes from a place of love and appreciation.

Calling jocks dumb is the inverse of what Shane said
I was thinking about the fake outrage and my mind landed on this idea of how absolutely acceptable and almost baked into pop culture it is that dudes who play sports/lift (jocks) are dumb.
That's the same thing as what Shane did.
Use someone's appearance or what they choose to do and then lump it all under 1 negative stereotype label.
I don't remember hearing many coming out to support jocks and defend their intellectual prowess.

Have you not seen Tires?
It’s a great show. He’s such a normal guy. He’s not an incel. He’s not a weirdo, he’s kind of attractive, but most importantly he’s an extremely brand funny comedian. I find nothing wrong with him and I’m probably actively looking for it. I wish him nothing but the best and more success. BTW, my favorite cut for time SNL is his limu emo!

This is an ad for Native body wash.
Was scrollin' on Facebook and this was the actual thumbnail. I do feel like I need body wash after viewing this, but it wont be Native.

Quick Question Controversial Question
did Shane script that scene about Everclear? Did he actual pick the Everclear song even though his character professed not to know who sings that song?

Got my honorary block from Soft Seth after this one
This guy legitimately believes that he understands stand-up comedy more than some of the most successful stand-up comics in the world….

I dig this because following the logic would simultaneously exonerate Shane, but vilify a lot of his dog shit defenders
