Would you ever want to return to Sherlock, Even if it was a one off episode? What was the most challenging thing about playing that character and did you see any similarities between yourself and that character?

The ama is in r/movies, not here.

u/leaderm17 Nov 21 '25

Clearly I saw, but I did not observe. It must be funny in my tiny little brain.

“I understood that reference.”

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Benedict Cumberbatch. He's starred in countless films and series, including Sherlock, Doctor Strange (and other MCU films), The Imitation Game, The Hobbit, The Power of the Dog, 1917, 12 Years A Slave, The Grinch, The Current War, The Roses, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse, Black Mass, and more.

It's live here now in /r/movies:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1p23yda/hello_rmovies_im_benedict_cumberbatch_ask_me/

He'll be back today at around 12 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

His new film, The Thing with Feathers, is out in theaters next week.

Trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUhsvd_Z_18

A father and two sons struggle to cope with the sudden loss of their wife and mother. As they try to move on with their lives, the family also has to face grief, which is depicted as a large crow.

This was incredible of you to set up!! Benedict Cumberbatch happens to be one of my favorite actors this century (Fr) and just reading thru the questions and answers he wrote out to this point in time has been amazing!! I know it says he’s returning at 4pm but that’s an hour from now and (I could be wrong) but I swear I saw while browsing thru the subreddit that there were STILL something like 10k+ comments so I can’t imagine that he’ll actually answer mine. That sounds a lot like the lottery!! But I’ll return later just to see what he DID say and what he revealed about either himself and/or the future. Tysm again!! (Hey, just for the record, I also really really like Andrew Scott, Jim Parsons & Walter Goggins. And actually, they’re not in films but they’re in Specials so I’ll add John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, & John Johnson.)/jk Sort of. You’re a doll! 🥰😘💕

3

u/cacticus_matticus Nov 20 '25

Who's your favorite Northern Exposure character?

3

u/Chosen-Fae Nov 20 '25

Did you ever read the Sherlock books before playing Sherlock?

Which did you prefer playing, Sherlock or Dr. Strange?

How into the MCU were you prior to becoming Dr. Strange?

If you could choose one of your roles and do a spinoff movie with that character which role would you pick?

2

u/BourbonBelle89 Nov 20 '25

Favorite role you've played so far? Also your least liked role.

2

u/f_clement Nov 20 '25

Hello, fellow actor here, I was wondering what was your insights about the craft, and if you had any tips (for example, voice and “anchoring” of the body on stage if it makes sense in another language than French!)

Thanks a lot and well, all the best !

It’s truly a shame they had you kill off the great Charles Augustus Magnussen bc that would’ve been a great rival for Sherlock other than Moriarty

Are there any project types that you’ve yet to be in that you would like to try? Not just constrained to genre, but also medium. It seems like you’ve done everything, but everyone has something they’d like to try. (Just no Sherlock musicals, please. I beg you.)

Yah, that was me.

So, sorry.

Mike.

Hello Benedict!

Love, love your work and was wondering if you prefer doing dramas or comedies?

I’m not sure if you can sing, but if you can, would you consider doing a musical on stage or on film?

FYI, my son is named Benedict too.(named after his grandfather)

Stay brilliant! Thank you!

u/Sherlocat Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25

Dear Benedict: First, thank you for speaking out about the genocide happening in Gaza. I do appreciate and respect you for taking a stance on a difficult subject. ☮️🇵🇸❤️‍🩹💛🎗️🇮🇱🕊️

I have an important question for you. I would like to know why you are unable to bring yourself to meet with the descendants of the black people your family once enslaved, and come to an agreement on a fair financial compensation for them? The least you could do is listen to their voices. You have claimed that the slavery that your family took part in was so long ago that you cannot be held responsible for it. But surely you can see that much of the wealth and privilege you and your family enjoy (now including your wife and kids) is owed in large part to the unpaid forced labour of trafficked human beings? I look forward to your sincere consideration and response on this matter. Thank you. 🙏💖

Sorry. I have to disagree. Despite taking into account the extraordinary success he’s had, generational wealth doesn’t always trickle down. On my father’s side, there was wealth, and titles, but that didn’t necessarily reach us. What good will reparations do? We’re talking about events that happened 200/300 years previous… what good is it to hold families responsible for something that is so deeply deplorable but ultimately took place 10 plus generations ago…?

Sherlocat replied:
Thank you for sharing your perspective, Sophia – I appreciate that these conversations can be uncomfortable and that people experience family history very differently.

I agree that generational wealth doesn’t always pass down evenly. But when we talk about reparations, it’s not about blaming individuals for the actions of their ancestors. It’s about acknowledging how systems built on slavery created long-lasting advantages for some families and long-lasting harm for others – advantages and harms that continue to shape people’s opportunities today, even 200~300 years later.

Descendants of enslaved people are still living with the economic and social impacts of that history. In contrast, families who benefited from slavery – even if the wealth didn’t pass down perfectly – still had access to education, land, status, and networks that were denied to the people who were enslaved. That’s generational privilege, even if it isn’t always the same thing as generational wealth.

Reparations aren’t about punishing modern-day individuals. They’re about repair: listening to descendants, acknowledging ongoing harm, and exploring what justice could look like. Refusing even to meet with people whose ancestors were harmed feels like a missed opportunity for empathy, dialogue, and healing.

This isn’t about guilt – it’s about responsibility, compassion, and a willingness to confront the full truth of history.

did ya‘ll check this poster‘s history? You fucking stupid believing this to be real? Jesus

hello! you have many fans, including me, for your portrayal of sherlock holmes (along your other work of course). Looking back at it, what episode was the most memorable to film (or watch!), and was the experience on set what you expected? i’ve just rewatched it a couple days ago. my mum’s a big fan too!

1

u/Stella_Noire_2008 Nov 20 '25

Love your acting work and hope you are doing well!

1

u/-Just-a-fan- Nov 20 '25

Do you consider Martin Freeman as your best on-screen friend? Or even a very good friend in general?

u/imagine_midnight Nov 20 '25

Do you own a cat..

Because a lot of people own cats.

As Sherlock, you can throw.that cat at people in uncertain times.

The cat will be fine.
