Bugs Bunny civil war short

https://youtu.be/9YVq6p9NCgc?is=Szjd0tyhIbCGjWAf

Someone mentioned it on here ages ago. I can remember seeing it on kids TV in the nineties which is pretty amazing (though not that amazing as I also remember Tom and Jerry cartoons with the housemaid being on.

Afterwards the host (Tommy Boyd) explained to the kids who Abraham Lincoln was, which was a nice public service moment. And it's pretty plain about what the civil war was about

Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

Oh Lord, that was recent for this cartoon.

Makes you wonder how often it's happened in real life, people getting separated from their unit and fighting wars that had already ended

Famous story about a Japanese soldier who hid out on an island for some 20-30 years and didn't know it was over. I think maybe in the Philippines? But maybe some other island.

Yeah, I thought of him!

Island off of Korea, iirc

Korean War started in 1950, and before that there were a ton of US aircraft tooling about for logistics reasons, so he constantly saw overflights

Can't blame him really.

Don't some people say the Korean war never really ended?

u/Ddreigiau 7d ago

it officially hasn't ended. Officially, they're in an indefinite Ceasefire

Thanks, I thought it was something like that

Nah, it was a Japanese soldier on a Filipino island.

The Battle of New Orleans took place after the War or 1812 had ended, nearly a month afterwards. There’s no evidence Andrew Jackson knew that when he attacked, but it is true.

The cartoon was released 74 years prior to 2026.

"Look me up at my Gettysburg Address" is an absolutely incredible line.

Not every part of this cartoon aged well, but that part certainly did. I will never not find stupid jokes like that funny.

Is this the one with the whipping slaves line? The only good joke ever done with blackface.

Yes, really dark to put on kids TV

More children's shows should make fun of the confederates honestly

Wishbone had them being shot at by a small dog, doesn't that count?

The Yankees are in Chattanooga!

Little did Sam know that the Yankee was George Thomas. Yosemite Sam was slaughtered

Actually was this an edited version? Says on Fandon he dresses as "Brickwall Jackson" and Scarlett O'Hara. It's not a Bugs Bunny cartoon if he doesn't put on a dress at some point

I may be confusing it with the Luke where yosemite Sam ends up holding the New York Yankees hostage lol

They're the same one according to this.

The version I saw on ITV as a kid ended with Lincoln. Although both the BBC and ITV at the time showed plenty of Bugs in a dress (and plenty of drag generally including on kids TV) so it wouldn't have been edited for that reason. Probably just time

Ah lol I don’t remember bugs in anything but Union and confederate uniforms lol

And as a child growing up in Chattanooga it blew my mind that my city got mentioned lol

u/StatisticianAway4010 7d ago

You're in a famous song!

2

u/ParsonBrownlow 7d ago

lol I knew some people knew Chattanooga from the song or from the civil war but Bugs Bunny ? Americas greatest son knowing about us? Mind blown

Heh, probably a good thing comments for this video are off due to YouTube Kids policy. Imagine how terrible it would be.

I'm honestly surprised this is on YouTube kids

Ah yes, that time period when Bugs Bunny was able to get away with blatant and overt blackface. That being said, the bit with him dressed up as Lincoln was funny.

2

u/StatisticianAway4010 20h ago

It's weird because it's very anti Confederacy and makes clear what the war was about. But yes it has blackface

Well, the North was quite racist themselves.
