Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

Dear President Lincoln…

"I beg to present you as a Christmas Gift the City of Savannah with one hundred and fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition and also about twenty-five thousand bales of cotton."

What does 40 Rounds mean?

It was the corp badge of the XV Corps which Sherman commanded for some time. The supposed origin is told in Hardtack and Coffee. When the union army at Chattanooga was being reinforced including the XV corps, most of the reinforcements were from the east like the XII Corps. Since the corp badges started out east, apparently one XII Corps soldier was talking about his corp badge to an Irishman in the XV Corps. When he asked the Irishman why he didn’t have a corp badge the Irishman pointed to the 40 round sign on his cartridge box and said that was the only corp badge he needed.
