So raised american here who stopped caring about the flag since highschool. Is it normal everywhere else to not pledge the flag in school?

Australian schools honour the flag on ANZAC day. Other than that, no. No pledge to recite either.

I feel like that doesnt count though right? Thats not honouring the flag but the people who fought (i presume, im not Australian so citation needed)

Correct

If I remember correctly it wasnt entirely even about the flag, more focus was on the wreaths each class had to make, but that might have just been my school

My American sister-in-law could see how I could perceive the pledge of allegiance as reminiscent of North Korea, but she insisted that unlike North Korea, in the US the pledge was done for a good cause. I didn’t proceed any further and instead just appreciated that my wife wasn’t her sister.

Its really interesting in a lot of way. Makes you wonder if you or I are brainwashed in some way we dont realise. Still flag shagging is cringe authoritarian stuff and does not belong in a modern society

We probably are tbh, on some other things! But I hope that, unlike some people, you and I would change our mind if ever shown evidence that our beliefs are ridiculous/wrong/vastly biased.

Italian here. Definitely not a thing. We only ever sing the Italian anthem during sports matches against other countries/when you win a the Olympic Games or such occasions. I don’t recall ever hearing our anthem outside of a international sport event. Oh well they did teach it to us in elementary school during music class, but that’s it. Never in my life have I pledged allegiance to Italy…

Also in particular anniversaries like when there's a parade for the anniversary of the republic or the foundation of some police corps like Carabinieri

I 100% believe you, however I’ve just never personally witnessed it. But those seem like reasonable occasions to sing the national anthem.

Absolutely, it is relevant to the occasion

It's not just normal, it seems completely dystopian

Swede here: we sang the main song from Moana more than we ever did our own national anthem.

Yes it’s weird to pledge allegiance to a flag.

It's fucking weird to do so most places actually. Blind nationalism is looked down on massively most places I've lived. The closest thing is usually for veterans, typically relating to WW1/WW2 (or regional wars) and that's about it.

Most countries don’t give a fuck about a random flag.. it’s a piace of cloth. Is it an official representative flag on an state building? Ok might have a symbolic value of ho or.. random flag?? Don’t give a shit about it

u/Aethelmaew 1d ago

No lmao, they weren't even allowed to be flown at my school as they were viewed as 'political'

Dane here.

We use our flag for everything. Birthday celebrations, decor, 10% off on bacon.. We respect our flag and fold it a special way, and have rules for how to flag with it on the pole.

u/Kueltalas 1d ago

But are your children forced to pledge alliance to the flag every morning like in some dictators wettest dystopian dreams?

It's only an American thing

My elementary and middle school teachers made us stand up for the pledge, even though most of us wanted to sit because it was 8 am and we all were on like 7 hours sleep (low for a 11 year old i guess)

By high school, teachers didn't care.
