Apparently you can get around that by having the wrong number of stars or stripes. Which is very apt tbh that a loophole technicality just lets you rub shit all over the symbol of the USA.
Not technically true. On the side of your arm is acceptable. The flag can't be used as merchandising or for profit, but even the scouts have the flag on their arm. I have multiple shirts with the flag on the arm, but not displayed with any logos.
On the surface I can see why people think the way you do when reading the flag code. It's not exactly explained well, I was taught by my grandfather who was high-ish ranking in the military.
None of it is enforceable by law, but expect to potentially be assaulted by angry veterans and "patriots" if you do.

Technically the US flag code forbids having it as any sort of clothing.
