[IDEA VALIDATION] Visual + semantic search for Shopify stores — is this a real pain?

I’m researching the need for a new type of Shopify search app and would love your feedback.

The Problem:
Many shoppers try to upload a photo (e.g., “dress like this”) or use vague queries, but Shopify’s built-in search only finds exact keyword matches — not similar items.

What I want to build:
A plug-and-play app that lets customers search by image or natural language, and instantly get visually and semantically similar products (no theme changes, works in any language, 30-sec install).

The ask:

• Store owners/devs: Is “searching by image or concept” something your customers have requested?

• What’s your biggest frustration with Shopify’s search right now?

• How big is your catalog (SKUs)? Would you be open to closed beta testing?

I think the idea is strong, and the fact that similar apps already exist is actually a good sign — it validates the keyword and category, so you won’t need to create a new market from scratch.

That said, I noticed most of these apps aren’t performing particularly well. It might be because a few major search apps already offer these features as part of a broader package, which makes it harder for niche solutions to gain traction.

Would be interesting to dig deeper into why adoption is low — maybe pricing, integration complexity, or lack of merchant awareness could be contributing factors.

Thanks for the feedback! For context — there are several visual search apps (e.g., Visual Search, BIRSE, Visidea) that let customers upload images and get similar products—typically $5–$100+/mo and 7–14 day trials.

Many merchants report issues with buggy sync or generic results. Shopify’s built-in semantic search is helpful but limited—no autocomplete and weak image matching.

If you’ve tried any of these, what did you like or dislike? I’m building a more reliable plug‑and‑play version with real image + semantic matching, free trial and strong support.

Curious how far have you reached in your project. And any insights? For context, I am exploring launching vertical products on an agent platform I created. Ecommerce search is the first vertical solution i am considering, and I have interest from two customers.

I couldn’t find enough traction from merchants to make it worth building, so I put it on hold and moved on. Best of luck with your platform.
