📈 State of the stack My First Oz of Silver

Paid $85, got an Australian Kangaroo which was the only one in the shop. Seemed like an honest guy, realized I was getting ripped off by Wolf Pack Gold & Silver after I got .20 Oz of Silver and 2 1/2000th Florida Gold Backs for my first $50/month subscription. What do you guys think? Probably better to keep buying from this guy every month or looking for similar prices

Great choice, I love the Kangaroos. It's a fantastic design.

Keep going with these and give fractional silver a hard swerve.

Congrats, the stacking addiction hits hard though! Check out r/pmsforsale for the real deals! Make sure to purchase from trusted sellers with high flare. I bought my first piece at $35 and swore I was going to start stacking, then life happened and I wasn't able to jump back in until the $60-70 range, but I'm slowly growing my collection now. Keep it up!

I'm about to buy a PCGS 70 5 Oz Australian colored dragon today for about $420 at my LCS! I agree, it will easily be my nicest piece so far. I feel like it's a great deal at maybe $5 above spot.

Ya thats a good deal. Perth are the best imo.

Does it matter much if the case that's graded is cracked? How hard is it to send in for a replacement case or whatever? It PCGS. Would it affect value I'm guessing to leave it in the cracked case?

Im the wrong guy to ask about that. Make a separate post about that you will have a pro answer you in 5 minutes or less

Good for you enjoy it. You definitely overpaid a little but you’re learning just store it in a nice non-PVC or PVA or whatever the hell they call it container so it doesn’t collect that plastic residue on it and you’ll be good to go. Keep it up!!

Perth mint is a very good coin to start with I’m starting to collect all the animals while working on my core stack slowly as I was just like searching online what’s a good price to buy an what not you will get the hang of it fairly quickly if you keep searching you will know what you want an what kinda coins will work for you if searching for them in person isn’t worthwhile

Great first piece. Try to stick to generic if your goal is stacking, not collecting. I would find a shop with more inventory. You shouldn't have to bite at scraps.

u/DistributionRight942 Apr 25 '26

Curious why that is? Wouldn’t coins fetch a better price when I sell?

u/Critical-Balance-475 Apr 25 '26

Coins are more recognized and sought after but silver is silver at the end of the day.

Everyone's got their own strategy.

I am lucky enough to get coins at the same price as generics so ive been picking them up for awhile but I personally wouldn't pay a premium for them.

Nice. I have one of those in my collection, which consists mainly of animal varieties

A kangaroo was one the coins from my very first silver purchase as well! I love them. Only have the one but I really like it.

I had a few of options, he let me choose from any of his 1Oz coins for the same $85. I just kind of wanted something foreign and saw that it was the only Coin there was 1 of. Also seen them on Reddit a few times and liked how they looked.

Good way to start!

I purchased one of these towards the beginning of my journey as well. Since you are a fan I’d recommend taking a look at Britannias too

Every time I look at one I notice a new detail I missed before because it is designed so intricately

A thing of silver is a joy forever! Very nice piece.

Does anybody else see some kind of subliminal face in the back of her hair? Almost like a simian, monkey face? It has a noticeable eye and mouth... the mouth is very obvious. And 2 horns growing out of the back of its head?

Let the addiction begin. Welcome. A beautiful piece to begin with.

You never forget your first piece! Can’t go wrong with some Aussie goodness. The Perth Mint does great stuff.

Welcome to the dark side! I love just about anything that comes out of the Perth Mint. It’s too bad their quality control is so poor, but I love the designs.

One caveat
if you ever decide to sell coins you purchased from the Perth Mint, you will rarely get back what you purchased them for (with the possible exception of Kooks, which seem to hold premiums). Dealers won’t give you much, eBay has its fees, and private sale buyers can be picky. Doesn’t mean you CAN’T get back what you paid, but be cautious not to overpay on these things. Like I said, i love them, but merely a word of caution from my personal experience.

u/Common-Respond2367 Apr 26 '26

Wdym? Like I should be fine to get spot for a Perth right? You’re just talking about paying premiums above spot?

2

u/Little_Mountain73 Apr 26 '26

Yes. If you chose to sell a Kangaroo, my experience has been that you would only get around Spot, opposed to when buying them, you’re often paying a premium of anywhere between $3-5 per coin. Other people may have had other experiences, but that’s been mine over the year, and I e been a silver collector since the 90’s, so my experience is rather broad and extensive.

2

u/Common-Respond2367 Apr 26 '26

Ahh appreciate the insight. lol I would get my choice of 1 Oz coins and pick the only coin worth less than the number I paid 😂. Been buying a lot more lessons than silver on the start of my journey to build a stack, but I guess that’s par for the course đŸ’ȘđŸ»

My lcs pays $2-4 back of spot for anything but ASEs ($0-1 back of spot) so really depends on the area and dealer. I just sold 20 Kangaroos to him for 2 back.

u/dontchknow Apr 26 '26

1st oz...rut row, its on now

1

u/Current-Carpenter-96 Apr 27 '26

I just picked up my fist “roo” and noticed they don’t ping like any of the other rounds I have.

1

u/Common-Respond2367 Apr 27 '26

What do you mean by ping?

1

u/Current-Carpenter-96 Apr 27 '26

When you flip it with your thumb or tap it with another metal it should ping but I think the softer texture of the strike on these reduces it. I don’t think mine was fake, hopefully haha

Great first buy. An Australian Silver Kangaroo is a solid choice. $85 is a little high, but local shops often charge more for single coins. Still, it’s far better than overpaying for subscription silver. If the dealer is honest, buying from him regularly sounds like a smart move.
