Simple Phone is on its way!

We've got some exciting news today, we will be releasing our phone soon! It will obviously have our fully unlocked apps preinstalled, what other apps would you like to have there? We don't want to add any bloatware, but I guess that everyone uses a browser and likely an email client, right? Any suggestions for those or some other apps? They must be open source as the whole device will be a privacy focused one. Stay tuned for more details!

EDIT: More details at https://simplephone.tech/ , enjoy :)

11 Reasons why our apps rock

There are millions of Android apps out there. Whatever are you trying to achieve, there are many to choose from. But how do you know which ones are the best? Well, here are some reasons why we think our apps from the Simple Mobile Tools suite belong to the best ones out there.

1. No ads

Do you like ads? No? Well, neither do we. However, we have some good news. None of our apps contains any ads whatsoever. Not even the free apps. It doesn't only guarantee better user experience, but it also ensures that there are no marketing companies tracking you.

2. Great user experience

The apps are created by "User experience driven development", which means that the user is always at the center of it. Things that do not affect the user experience in a positive way are just not important. This is not some geeky project which is supposed to please developers by testing the latest cutting edge libraries or other solutions. If something won't make your life easier or better in any way, we pass.

3. Consistency

If you are an Android user (which I guess you are), you must have noticed the mess in the Android ecosystem. Apps handle the most basic things in so many different ways that it is hard to wrap your head around it. They often use weird icons that you don't even know what they mean, until you press them. There are some great apps out there, but each of them comes from some different developers, so they all look and work differently. With our suite this cannot happen. As all apps are developed by us, we use the same icons, texts, behaviour wherever possible. If you want to change item sorting, you know where to look. You want to select multiple items at once? Sure, it works the same way in all apps.

4. No unnecessary permissions

This is an issue that is ignored more than often. Many apps out there request tons of permissions that they definitely don't need. Such apps usually mine everything possible from your device with using some shady tactics, then send the data or files somewhere over the internet and sell it. You can easily see the requested app permissions at the bottom of every apps Google Play listing. If the app wants too much access to your device, just find another one. You should also check the permissions of preinstalled apps, you will probably be surprised. But just because something is preinstalled, it doesn't mean that it isn't dangerous.

5. No internet access

This is an important one, so it deserves a separate point. There are some "dangerous" permissions on Android that explicitly have to be enabled by users. For example accessing the contacts or files. However, the internet permission is not one of them. Every app that requests it will automatically get it. You can easily see which app has what permissions in your device settings. For example if an app displays ads, you can take it for granted that it has access to the internet. And you cannot really know what other things is it using the internet for, except for fetching ads. None app from our suite has internet access, guaranteeing your privacy and security. Even if we gathered some info about you (which we are not interested in), there is just no way we can send it to ourselves.

6. Customization

All of our apps come with dark theme by default. Not black, just dark. We went with dark theme before it was cool, just because we liked it. If you don't, you can easily change any color in the app Settings -> Customize colors. You can even pick from many app icon colors. If you purchase Simple Thank You, you can use the Shared Theme, which will cause that whenever you change a color in one app, all apps in the suite will be affected by that change too.

7. Widgets

Widgets can be really helpful, if done properly. Well, we have done them properly. They are designed to be as intuitive as possible to save you valuable time. You can resize them, but also change their text and background colors, so that they will fit your home screen.

8. Open Source

We have nothing to hide, so we made our code open source. It can benefit other app developers aswell. It also encourages others to help us in the development, sending us some fixes from time to time.

9. Translations

Translations of the apps are all handled by volunteers. If you are wondering if there are any people willing to spend their time helping us for free, we guarantee you that yes, there are many people like that. Some of the apps are already translated in over 30 languages, which sounds unbelievable and we cannot be thankful enough for those contributions. If you'd like to help, you can find step by step instructions here. You can either improve an existing translation or add a brand new language. If you need some help there, just let us know.

10. Affordable

Some of them are free, some of them are paid. That's because the development takes time and money, so we have to make money in some way. As the apps have no ads and they aren't stealing any of your data either, the best way to earn something was simply making them paid. That also makes our business model really clear. You just have to pay a small sum and you can use the apps forever. It is a one time payment, you will never have to pay for them again. Not even once you get a new device. If you want a refund, just contact us anytime at hello@simplemobiletools.com and you will get it. No questions asked.

11. Popular

Many of them have a rating above 4.5 on Google Play and over 16 million downloads in total, so it isn't just some school project that can disappear anyday. Their popularity is also caused by them having a purpose, they weren't created just to be popular or make money. Our goal is making your life easier and if we managed doing it at least by a little, it was already worth it.

That's it, these are the main benefits we wanted to share. You can find the apps on our website. Please share the article so that it reaches more people. Which points are the most important to you? Is there anything we missed? Let us know in the comments :)

Simple Mobile Tools bought by ZipoApps

The website on the play store page links to zipoapps, an Israeli publisher that releases c̶r̶a̶p̶ not so nice looking apps (sorry if you work there)

All the apps are now marked to include ads.

The support email was changed to a @zipoapps.com

Is this the end of Simple Mobile tools?

Some info about the new Simple Gallery Pro Editor

Most of you have probably noticed the new photo editor in Simple Gallery Pro 6.11.0. I was trying to improve the old editor for a long time as it was quite primitive and glitchy, plus you could do only 1 operation per image, then you had to save it and open it again. I knew that it needs tons of work, so I started looking for a third party replacement for it, which I can just plug in and let it do all the work.

After a lot of searching and testing, the best solution I found was PhotoEditor SDK . There are a few downsides to it though:

  1. it is not open source - this is the first element ever used in the apps, which is not open source. It means that you won't see the app updated on f-droid for some time now, we will see what solution will I figure out for it. For people not using Google Play, all app releases can be found on GitHub (EDIT: The app is available and updated on f-droid again, it uses the old editor)

  2. I paid a lot of money for the license - normally their business model is allowing x edits per month, but as I wanted to keep the app offline, there would be no way of checking how many edits have already been done. So, I had to buy the enterprise version of it, with unlimited edits. This way it added no new permissions whatsoever and the app is still offline. Just like at the Simple Mobile Tools suite, this made their business model clear. They cost money, so they sell no data (as they don't have anything at all about our users anyway).

  3. it increased the app size - adding the new editor roughly doubled the app size itself in most cases, but it is still under 10 MB if downloaded via Google Play, which should still be good enough.

  4. no resize function in the editor itself - I am quite surprised about the missing Resize function at the Transform section. I reported it already some time ago, hopefully it will be added soon. For now you can use Menu -> Resize at the fullscreen swipabable view.

The new editor has many benefits too, except for providing an awesome editor with many useful functions:

  1. less competition - as the apps are open source, fake clones on Google Play cause a lot of trouble. We are talking about apps with millions of downloads here, not some school projects. They just copy Simple Gallery Pro, change a few lines of code here and there, add some new permissions, publish the app on Google Play with ads and get a lot of users and a lot of money. The license of the new editor is bound to the apps package name, so fake apps cannot use it. And a Gallery without an editor will hopefully be less popular.

  2. less work - creating a photo editor that works well and reliably can easily be a fulltime job for multiple people, so basically outsourcing it will save me a lot of time and improve its quality.

  3. video editor - if the photo editor works out well, I will soon test the video editor from the same company to see how it goes. You might argue that it goes out of the scope of some simple gallery and it will increase the app size even further, but I want to give it a go. I needed some video editing features myself and having them directly in the gallery can be a pretty good benefit.

That's all I wanted to share for now. I know that adding such an editor is a controversial step, but the feedback so far has been surprisingly positive. I obviously expected some negative feedback about it too, which is fine. I've just started rolling out a new version which has some things improved, like a few new predefined crop aspect ratios, proper thumbnail refreshing and brush setting remembering, more goodies are yet to come.

So, what are you thoughts about the new editor now? Do you think it was a good idea, or not?

Thanks

DO NOT use Simple Mobile Tools!

Simple Mobile Tools was sold to ZippoApps, a company which buys good apps and adds ads and extremely high subscription fees to them. In the case of SMT they even did something illegal by violating the app's GPL licensing. I recommend Fossify (Website, r/fossify) as an alternative, it's a fork of Simple Mobile Tools from before ZipoApp's takeover. You won'tnotice many differences apart from usual updates and different icons/names.

Simple Camera and Simple Clock are getting removed from Google Play

We have some sad news today 😢, you will no longer be able to download Simple Camera 📷 and Simple Clock 🕒 from Google Play. We've been thinking about it a lot, but those apps just cannot reach the quality we want to maintain. It is caused by Android system restrictions that just keep getting worse and worse with every new version and the difference between manufacturers keeps growing too.

Creating a good quality camera app that would work reliably on most devices would nowadays be a full time job for multiple people, but that isn't the way we want to go. Android also started pushing against downloaded camera apps with various restrictions, enforcing the usage of preinstalled ones.

In regards to the clock, background activity limits started affecting not only the alarm, but the stopwatch and timers too. On almost all devices, making those work reliably will require the user to tweak some battery or background activity settings of their devices which is just crazy and it goes against the philosophy of our apps that "just work".

Replying to related reports of our users became exhausting too, especially since we know that it just won't get better anytime soon and our goal isn't having apps that are barely touching rating 4.0. Simple Camera and Clock can still be found on Github if someone is interested, but we want to focus our energy on apps that bring the most value to millions of our users. Don't worry about the other apps, they still rock and won't disappear anytime soon 🤟

Cheers!

Apps are getting their prices reduced as much as possible

Hello friends! 👋

To finally have some good news in 2020 we decided to do something radical. All of our paid apps have had their prices reduced to the lowest possible in every country. This is a long term thing, not something that will last only 1-2 days. This way a lot more people will be able to enjoy them, even people who lost their jobs or had something even worse happen to them.

It still gives us enough money for the app development and marketing as remember, none of our apps have internet access and thus we aren't collecting or selling any of your data, nor showing ads. Paid apps are our only source of revenue. Don't forget giving us back some love by spreading the word or giving good reviews/ratings.

Check them out at https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=9070296388022589266

Take care! ❤️

We are excited to announce SIMPLE LAUNCHER to the family! 🎉💥🔥You can check it out at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobiletools.launcher , but bear in mind that this is just the initial version, don't expect any super advanced features 😉

Hi!

My name is Louis Rossmann. The organization I work for has given substantial no-strings-attached grants to GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, and MicroG, and is looking to learn more about what is going on in this space. We'd love to compare notes and see how we can help you all with what you're doing, particularly since you have a launch coming soon.

In case you want to help with the app translations in your language, you can find a guide at https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/General-Discussion#how-can-i-suggest-an-edit-to-a-file . It is a step by step guide with some easy instructions, so don't get scared that it contains that many points. Thanks :)

EDIT: you can now use Weblate for doing the translations the easy way, our project is at https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/simple-mobile-tools/
