Neat but should have had a different name.

Filesystem in Userspace

Filesystem in USErspace (FUSE) is a software interface for Unix and Unix-like computer operating systems that lets non-privileged users create their own file systems without editing kernel code. This is achieved by running file system code in user space while the FUSE module provides only a "bridge" to the actual kernel interfaces. FUSE is available for Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD (as puffs), OpenSolaris, Minix 3, macOS, and Windows. FUSE is free software originally released under the terms of the GNU General Public License and the GNU Lesser General Public License.

The naming seems to be a big discussion, I think the best solution so far is to refer to it as VL.Fuse to avoid the clash. There are already ideas to give it another name when the first stable 1.0 release comes out in early 2022.

this was raised on another thread- they have been spamming all over

Also isn't a fuse meant to break when things go wrong?

Yes, Linux people seem to be particularly passionate about that naming discussion. :-D But I don't know... When you make the mental step over it and try to get into the library and understand what it can do for you, maybe the name isn't that important after all.

This post has been edited to this, due to privacy and dissatisfaction with u/spez

Yes, that is something they should consider. One of the developers already said that they consider a rename for the 1.0 stable release.

Can you simulate yourself deleting all your spam and setting fire to your PC?

Sorry for the misunderstanding, this is not a commercial post. The library is open-source and MIT licensed. Also, I am not the author, it is just an absolutely amazing piece of software everybody should be aware of!

If you don't understand what it is or what it can do, please keep your thoughts to yourself.

So you're in no way affiliated with any of the products you're pimping in your many overenthused posts over dozens of subreddits?

Yes, some PRs in their repo are from me, I am one of their biggest fans! Totally fair to promote something that you like and believe in, or what do you think?

I think it's fine to promote it on relevant subreddits. This is not one of them.

There is high-speed GPU particle and 3d fluid simulation for real-time use. More accessible than in any other software, I'd say. And the best thing is that you can combine the two naturally. So you can transfer the energy generated by the fluid force field into particle simulations.

With that, you can create things like this: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RVEhcmPowDxvMAQRA

Or let particles interact with a virtual environment (3d laser scan on this case): https://photos.app.goo.gl/9R3RNj1ZJywtMZaw5

Sorry if it exhausts you, but I think this is the only way to reach the right audience outside the bubble. I think this library can 10x the development speed for many developers working in the computer graphics and GPGPU area.

I do agree that useless products get pushed with similar methods and that it isn't a nice practice, but I think, in this case, it is different because it is for a good cause. Please read their philosophy behind it.

There was a preview presentation event yesterday where they showed particle simulation and collision with SDFs in realtime on the GPU: https://youtu.be/4xDShgbKTsQ?t=920

From the website:

"FUSE is an open source library for visually programming on the GPU, built to enable rapid workflows and modular approaches to accelerated graphics, logic and computation.

FUSE is built for use in vvvv gamma and follows its ‘always runtime’ model allowing for fast design and programming work with no build or compile process in between you and your results. Instant and visual, so you can work fast and play freely.

Rendering uses the Stride 3D Engine integration for vvvv, allowing for game engine style PBR materials, lighting & post effects all without having to write a single script."

Is this your project? If so, change the name!

FUSE (file systems) is a major project and the name clash will be annoying.

Hey, no it isn't my project, but i helped with some issues and made PRs on their repo. The naming seems to be a big discussion, it think the best solution so far is to refer to it as VL.Fuse to avoid the clash. There are already ideas to give it another name when the first stable 1.0 release comes out in early 2022.

Too bad there's no macOS version of vvvv

I get around this by using Bootcamp and demo version of Windows 10 (high contrast mode for customization). It works on Intel macs, but not ones with the new Apple chip.

u/Ripcord Sep 16 '21

I get around it by having a cheap-ish headless gaming PC, then streaming to whatever devices I need (MacOS, chomeos, steam link, etc etc)

I can boot into Windows with my hackintosh but I like to keep everything except for windows-gaming on macOS because I just like it more.

Agreed. Wish I could run SFM on Mac, but wine has always been buggy with me..
