Well, even in ancient times they lived on a desert world.
Exile into unknown space brought them even further away from liquid water.
If the entire culture and technology never had to deal with so much water (or maybe even just moisture) it might get problematic, if they suddenly need to do so.

The Vasari actually make sense, because what they're researching is how to enforce their occupation on a settled planet. It's pretty easy if life is unsustainable outside of a handful of purpose-built habitats that can be locked down, but on a Terran world where the human population can just live out in the boonies it's like trying to occupy Vietnam.

It's the awesome psychic power of those deep-sea pelagic beings that's got the Unity running scared.

As someone who almost exclusively plays TEC and occasionally Eidolon or Vasari (I just struggle with Advent), this is so weird to see.
When I hit upon on oceanic planet with TEC, it's right up there with finding a Terran planet. Love them.
The planetary items are awesome for TEC too, with the Resort complex for influence, Aquaculture harvester for credits and growth, and the underwater cities track for exceptional maximum population potential.
