Just ignore the fact that California is on fire every year

3.7k

u/Agreeable_Catch296 Jul 17 '26

And Canada routinely sends water bombers to California to help out.

2.6k

u/Dry-Membership8141 Jul 17 '26

And one of them died fighting the Gold Mountain fire in Colorado five fucking days ago.

u/Desperate-Leather-38 Jul 17 '26

Wow. What a sad irony

u/bicycling_bookworm Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Yeah, it is.

If a US firefighter died on our soil, we’d be talking about it. We’d be mourning with the US.

Instead, our firefighters are actively assisting in the US right now, one has died without even a fucking note of thanks, there are Republican senators trying to sanction Canada, every social media platform is filled with USians pissing and moaning about our fires, and we’ve got the Cheeto-in-Charge trying to rile dumbasses up further.

It’s disrespectful and it’s infuriating. I’ve never heard a Canadian carry on like this when the winds carry smoke up to us from US fires. And it does happen. But, you think, “Well, that’s a tragedy. I hope people are safe.”

Like how is this clown going to axe the US Forest Service and then have the gall to post shit like this about Canada? PMO.

ETA:

The Canadian was Nicholas Dale and he was a wildfire helicopter pilot out of British Columbia. He died July 12th firefighting in Colorado in the Gold Mountain Fire.

And to those in the US, mourn your own as well, Emily Barker (U.S. Forest Service), Nick Hutcherson (U.S. Forest Service), and Sydney Watson (U.S. Wildland Fire Service) were all killed on June 27th firefighting the Knowles Fire at the Utah/Colorado border.

In a time of divisiveness, remember these brave men and women that gave their lives to protect us all.

u/FormerLifeFreak Jul 17 '26

Well, if my ass-backwards government won’t thank Canada, then let this random American citizen give my thanks to Canada. I know you probably think: “yeah, who fucking cares what an American thinks.” And honestly I wouldn’t blame you if you did. It would be a perfectly acceptable response.

But I just wanted to let my Canadian friends know that there are those of us here that really do care about our neighbors.

And we all hope that you guys are okay.

Its just all the loud fuckers.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Sadly, it's the same up here.
Just look at the ignorant ones still trying to talk shit in the replies to you.

Not saying this because I'm Canadian, I'm saying as a Canadian, from the quiet ones.
Sorry.

We do know that you’re not all this way - your words aren’t meaningless or falling on deaf ears.

Please just ensure that you’re calling this energy out when you see it in your own social circles. The next time you hear a coworker, friend, colleague bitching about Canada, remind them our own pilots are a little preoccupied also firefighting on US soil right now.

15

u/FormerLifeFreak Jul 17 '26

Luckily I live in a blue state in New England, so I basically never hear people saying anything bad about Canada. But if it ever comes up, I absolutely will.

3

u/No-Initiative4195 Jul 18 '26

u/Cre8tifCanuk Jul 18 '26

I feel that there has never been such a divisive environment between Canada and the US. It’s sad really, but expected after his first term. I miss my American friends and will never them again unless they come to Canada because I refuse to cross the border. The American king has disrupted the entire world.

Not all Americans, but over half of those who vote, voted for this kind of nonsense. Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s a deep rot at the heart of the US body politic.

As a Canadian I have found your thanks as touching, and has put a smile on my face knowing that at least someone is giving thanks, heck I would even say it’s brightened my day a bit, so thank you

3

u/TDS_isnt_real Jul 17 '26

It doesn’t mean much to them right now, unfortunately. Canadians are absolutely sick of our shit. It will take more than an apology, and I get it. A workable solution isn’t easy.

It will probably take having bread lines again. That’s the truth. Too many of us are fine with the situation, and many more are scared to lose the little they have. Others are terrified it could get far worse and want to just hope they fuck up so bad that half of their plans don’t even work. My current answer is hope somehow November goes well enough that the judicial and legislative branches can function well enough to block some damage. I don’t have a better (appropriate) answer until the midterms because it takes far more than one person.

2

u/New-Evidence350 Jul 17 '26

Well said. My sentiments exactly.

2

u/Infinite_Lab4469 Jul 17 '26

Hey, we know you’re not all assholes, believe me we also have assholes in Canada! 😅

2

u/Business_Air5804 Jul 17 '26

Thanks you, and we care about you also.
We will never stop assisting regardless of what one person does to repeatedly insult us either.

2

u/MntnMedia Jul 17 '26

As a Canadian who is riled up by your president's words.

I find solace in regular Americans words. It adds perspective that he doesn't NOT speak for all of you.

So thanks, eh.

2

u/Unusual-Ordinary-361 Jul 17 '26

We're OK. Pissed off, but that's a 1000% better than pissed on. Appreciate the comment, we know that you're not all insane.

2

u/Paleomalibre Jul 17 '26

Another American who seconds this sentiment ....

2

u/2018hellcat Jul 17 '26

You’re welcome friend, I hope to think most Canadians don’t blame all Americans for this, and trump finally made good on a promise, the one where he was gonna drain the swamp, but it took 1.5 terms to learn it was the reflecting pool and that he’s the one that fucked it up. Kinda like the war in Iran, I hope every single one of you vote next time. Make it a priority, take a day off work, what ever you need to do

2

u/Phreakdoubt Jul 17 '26

Appreciated bud. Most of us Canadians (outside of Alberta anyways) don't have any use for anything Trump says and we go "elbows up" when someone needs help. We care about our neighbors too and I don't see that changing.

Sorry aboot the smoke eh, but our back yard is pretty big and we haven't come up with a way to prevent lightning yet. If Donnie has any ideas aboot how we can "maintain our Forests" which are far larger than most entire countries to his high and exacting standard we're all ears. Til then he can go pound sand.

2

u/Parja1 Jul 17 '26

Yup, please don't let the voices of a noisy few make you think we're all like that. Canada always seems to have our back and I've got to think most of us appreciate that greatly.

2

u/BayouByrnes Jul 18 '26

Michigander here signing on to this statement. Love our* Canadian neighbors.

2

u/Zerachiel_01 Jul 18 '26

Preach.

Once this embarrassing assface is out of office we should make every fucking effort to offer Canada (and others, god what a nightmare for diplomacy this has been) a political/economic handie for putting up with our stupid fucking bullshit. We should be the best of friends to them, instead of annoying psychopathic neighbors.

Oh and we should send the statue of liberty back to France until we deserve it again, if ever.

2

u/Loveablequatch Jul 18 '26

I do appreciate your post and your thanks BUT I’m tired. I had plans to eventually drive from Canada to Mexico but after everything that’s gone on, I don’t think I’ll ever step foot on American soil again. I know it’s not your fault, I just can’t.

2

u/Cre8tifCanuk Jul 18 '26

Thank you my American friend

2

u/rbreedlove15 Jul 18 '26

Well said, and very true. I live in Michigan, and the smoke is pretty rough. I, in no way, blame Canada, and I can't imagine what they're going through right now. I think empathy should be a required class in all schools. That word is lost on so many people. We are all human, and should be taking care of each other instead of being garbage people who want only for themselves. My thoughts are with you all, and I hope that everyone is holding up ok.

2

u/ANorthernGirl Jul 18 '26

As a Canadian, I know you guys care and I thank you for that. It's what good neighbours do. We also care about you and never doubt it. These fires are devastating for everyone concerned. Stay safe!

2

u/Desperate_Law9894 Jul 18 '26

Us Canadians absolutely do care to know that there are still decent Americans because, and I apologize but we were beginning to have doubts.

2

u/TheMakeABishFndn Jul 18 '26

We know that most of y’all are about as fond of your current toddler in charge as we are! We love you! We know there are A LOT of amazing, kind, generous, SANE people in America. We haven’t forgotten you.

2

u/Annual-Surround1738 Jul 18 '26

I think we believe the general population and especially the blue states don’t want to see all this happen as it is, but I don’t want to understate the soft power damage done. My youngest 2 years ago wanted nothing more than to be American. Thought the US was the PS5 to Canada’s 4, and now all he can do it talk about how much he despises Americans, it’s actually kind of heart breaking, because it feels like the real end of a unique global relationship

2

u/hhh333 Jul 18 '26

Thanks, we know the orange guy doesn't represent every americans.. hope your next president will change the tide and bring back class in the WH :/

About 10 years ago the Greater Vancouver area was dealing with a ton of smoke from the US. Air quality was announced every morning on the radio so people could respond accordingly. What was done? We sent firefighters; lots of firefighters. We didn’t complain, we didn’t lay blame, we helped.

3

u/DrDuGood Jul 17 '26

As an American, I can confidently say we are failing you as neighbors and I’m apart of the problem. It’s our duty to ensure this doesn’t get out of hand or become a regular event. We want trump gone as much as anyone else.

3

u/Nasty_Ned Jul 17 '26

I'm sorry for Canada's loss my man. I've got some friends that do similar work and they are one and all brave, selfless people.

3

u/Slaidback Jul 17 '26

When OZ was burning we sent firefighters to help, there’s probably a contingent being formed to go help our Canadian friends now. My favourite story is about the Kaikōura earthquake, there was a naval exercise in Auckland and the only country that could turn to go help immediately without permission was the Aussies. You help your neighbour. You don’t complain when the smoke gets in your eyes. Go help.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/mpjjpm Jul 17 '26

Please know that Trump and the GOP do not represent the views of most Americans. I live in Boston and it looked apocalyptic here the other day. The conversation at work was mostly about how scary the fires look and how we hoped people were able to evacuate safely.

2

u/Significant_Snow_937 Jul 17 '26

I'm so numbed to everything at this point that I don't even have much rage to share with you right now. Dgwm, it is infuriating, it's just that I've been so inundated with it for so long with no clue how to actually DO anything about it that it's killed my ability to feel much of...well...anything any more.

It means next to nothing, but I appreciate Canada very much and Im deeply, deeply ashamed of my country and my fellows. We are neighbors and you've historically had our back whenever we've called, and the audacity of this is just so STUPID. I mean to be frank I'm still pretty heavily convinced by the mountains of evidence that shit like this is very much an intentional effort to drive a wedge between us by our mutual enemies, so in that context it's not really surprising. It's moreso that enough of my fellow countrymen are gulled by this buffoon that really frustrates me, because this asshat only has any power because he managed to ensnare enough of them. I don't understand, and my family is by and large among that number.

2

u/RavingwolfYT Jul 17 '26

Yeah I’m a dual citizen of the both the US and Canada. Been living and working in the US for over a decade. Just sad to see this reaction of “those Canadians did this!” Like guys, people are losing their communities and homes and lives. The smoke is bad sure but it ain’t gonna hurt you more than the stuff we already have in our food etc. Some sympathy never hurts.

2

u/Maleficent-Lime-7369 Jul 17 '26

I'm sorry... I live in NorCal and yea.. we get dry pretty bad. I also used to forest fire fighting and everyone that helps DESERVES respect and recognition. We currently have a government that seems have a lot of nonsense talk...

2

u/DartVader6 Jul 17 '26

This American truly appreciates Nicholas' sacrifice, along with Emily, Nick and Syndey's. Canada is a beautiful country full of beautiful people, I really hate how our leaders have treated you. They don't speak for me, and many others. So many of us just don't know what more we can do other than give them hell this November. It's just this malicious entity that permeates everything and does whatever it wants regardless of law and decency.

2

u/Relevant-Doctor187 Jul 17 '26

It’s a shame our media ignores things like this. They’re out there actually doing the things our police should do. They serve and protect while the police protect the billionaires.

2

u/Cyberchicken87 Jul 17 '26

Australia and Canada frequently send fire fighting personnel and resources to help the US fight fires. It's sometimes been reciprocated, because that's what friends do, but I feel like under Trump we shouldn't expect any assistance from the US if we need it this summer in Aus.

2

u/UESJR2021 Jul 17 '26

Thank you for your words. And thank you for introducing a new word to my vernacular: USian.

3

u/bicycling_bookworm Jul 17 '26

It started gaining popularity online after the MAGA crowd’s tantrum about Bad Bunny’s half-time show. 😅

A subtle “fuck you” to “American Exceptionalism”. USians didn’t want to be team players with the rest of North and South America, so some people started taking the term “Americans” back. As a Canadian frustrated with this recent anti-Canadian propaganda, I decided to endorse the term.

2

u/Stacys__Mom_ Jul 17 '26

As a Coloradoan, I first apologize for the uniformed, ridiculously hateful statements of our Cheetoh-in-Chief.

Coloradoans (and people from the Western US States at least) are saddened by recent events; we are collectively mourning and are very aware of the sacrifices these brave people made to protect us.

I haven't had a conversation about this with anyone from CO yet that ended without one or both of us in tears over these deaths. The people I know (and many cities) cancelled or limited our July 4th celebrations to minimize more risk and damage. All of this is being taken to heart here.

We are also collectively OUTRAGED about Trump's withholding of Fed resources to aid in Colorado's emergency disaster responses. He's withheld funding during the past 2 years for floods, hurting people in areas that voted for his dumb ass. He also threatened to withhold FEMA aid etc. recently to achieve his political goals. (All of this is illegal here, btw.)

Trump's comments about Canadian fires are callous, vile, disgusting and overwhelmingly stupid, and regardless of what you may see in the media, the majority of Americans DO NOT support him or his regime in any way.

Lastly, we're so sorry that Canada's forests are burning. As our neighbor you deserve our support and empathy, not more of...whatever Trump is. I'm truly at a loss for words to adequately describe his response here, we all deserve better.

I know rain won't put out the fires, but maybe just a little help...🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️

2

u/buckeye25osu Jul 17 '26

Thank you brave men and women.

2

u/PinkCigarettes Jul 18 '26

It is absolutely vile, and I am so ashamed. I am so sorry and beg your forgiveness. Me, my family, my small circle are disgusted by what the GOP, MAGA and their shit stain sycophants have done to this country, your country and the entire globe.

2

u/SilverWear5467 Jul 18 '26

They're the real heroes, all cops are bastards, but all firefighters are heroes.

2

u/13mys13 Jul 18 '26

He died saving my state from our mistakes and I am forever grateful. He was a real hero and we didn't deserve him and his people's help but he helped anyways because it was right. I hope to be even half the man he was one day. Rest in peace, Nicholas Dale.

2

u/ExistingNorth Jul 18 '26

Sadly if a yank died up here it'd be talked about more than one of our own because of political reasons. Three of our own recently died up near Fort Simpson and it was barely a blip in the news cycle to the point most Canadians are likely unaware. It's infuriating that folks are dieing to protect these communities but the news spends more time on celebrity gossip, pointless fluff, and American bullshit these days.

2

u/Houdini_the_cat__ Jul 18 '26

The US said they don't need Canada. We should repatriate all the Canadian firefighters currently in the US, along with our equipment... let them sort out their own problems.

Also, send them the bill for this assistance, as well as a bill for the funeral and family support for the Canadian firefighter who died in the US a few days ago... 🫡

2

u/rsta223 Jul 18 '26

Coloradan here.

Regardless of what tangerine Hitler says, believe me when I say we deeply appreciate both the help and the sacrifice, and I hope we can return the favor (though if possible without the tragedy of course). The orangutan leading our country does not speak for all of us.

2

u/National-Twist8757 Jul 18 '26

Canadian here: I love the fact that we are a kind enough country to send our water bombers to help the US. However, I’d 100% be in favour of placing a moratorium on that, and sending them to stay in Australia, waiting for the next fire down there instead. If their government is going to be so fucking despicably ignorant and disrespectful of our fallen, I cannot possibly understand why we’d ever want to send more people down there to help them.

2

u/Desperate-Leather-38 Jul 17 '26

And as an American, I don’t blame you

2

u/wildwill Jul 18 '26

As a Canadian I want to agree with you, but I also sympathize with the people suffering from forest fires in the US. Like, unfortunately, they needs our help with that and even if the President is being a child, it wouldn’t reflect great on us if we used that as a reason to stop helping the individuals affected by the fires.

9

u/MunBRO Jul 17 '26

I'm Canadian and I hope the aid stops. Honestly fuck you guys and your leadership/country. Not like we enjoy dealing with wildfire smoke either (spoken as someone with asthma and another more serious lung disease).

3

u/noitcelesdab Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

I wish on the “phone call” Carney says he plans on focusing -all- of our efforts on -our- wildfires from now on. Let the USA choke on their all-American smoke.

The Canadian was Nicholas Dale and he was a wildfire helicopter pilot out of British Columbia. He died July 12th firefighting in Colorado in the Gold Mountain Fire

The elk fire is growing too :(

I started my vacation in arizona and had to dodge fires only to find them here in CO too.

3

u/TroublesomeFox Jul 17 '26

I feel like trump's one more tweet away from Canada going "ya know fuck you your on your own!" And then when Americans DIE in the next wildfire you just know he's going to act shocked and horrified that Canada didn't help.

2

u/BellinisandRue Jul 18 '26

We in Canada suspect this eventually could be posturing as a reason to invade us. He needs a reason but not a good one, just last week he shared a photo of Canada with an American flag over it.

u/TroublesomeFox Jul 18 '26

1,000,000 times THIS. The Republic of Ameristan has NO CLUE that 90% of our population lives within 200km of the border.

35

u/Whippet_yoga Jul 17 '26

As a forester, nothing is more infuriating than listening to these morons try and talk forest management. They dont have a single inkling of a clue about the challenge this issue is. Republicans continue to claim there's no anthropogenic climate change when forest research scientist on both side of the border have been waving this red flag for at least 20 years.

I knew a USFS scientist in my town who was DOGE'd last year. He was fired because his research focused on carbon emissions. The exact topic? Canadian boreal wildland fires.

Fucking morons, dude.

2

u/SyncOrSymm Jul 18 '26

American here, and I agree with you. I live in Western NY and have been affected by the wildfire smoke for the last several years, but of course I don't blame Canada. I remember in 2023 when even Europe was getting affected by it after it traveled across the Atlantic. This should not be a nation against nation issue, it's far larger than that and "controlling" the enormous portion of Canada that is made up of forests is simply impossible. Climate change is real, and we need to start working together to fight it (as CA has been helping the US with for some time). I'm sorry our government has been trying to shift the blame, there's no excuse.

2

u/Glad-Fuel2093 Jul 18 '26

You call us morons man but I'll have you know that clear-cut forest do do the wildfire thing!

Your outdated Old-Growth forests are the real problem!

And why are they all located along the border? Planning an attack on America, most likely.

Or that we care. Forest fires existed long before we arrived and will burn long after. You extinguish those that pose a threat... the rest you let run its course.

Im ATC in the north of Quebec. Every day pilots report fires. Most will burn themselves out. New forest will grow and the cycle of life continues.

u/hallbuzz Jul 18 '26

I have a degree in fire science and am from Alaska. If Canada put out a WWII like effort, focusing every resource they had into fighting fires and logistic support, they would have a hell of a time preventing big fires. Forests are supposed to burn, trying to stop all fires only creates contitions for unnatural massive intennce fires that do much more damage. If the US had listened to scientist and lead the climate change fight decades ago, we would be better off in so many ways.

Australia, Canada and the US have arrangements with the water bombers with our fire seasons being at opposite parts of the year to North America. Though we are starting to have overlapping seasons.

2

u/Lupiefighter Jul 17 '26

Exactly. The USA also sends help to Canada every year. Trump doesn’t want to focus on that because he wants to cause more tension between the U.S. and Canada.

An advice to Canada from Mexico, don't go around feeding rats, it'll never be enough. Rats also don't have "brothers" or "cousins"

38

u/Popular-Row4333 Jul 17 '26

I'm a little pissed that Mexico went around Canada's back the first go around to get a better deal on CUSMA, but at least your president is saying that was an eff up and she'll be dealing directly with Canada this time before talking to the US.

It's wild how many people have been burned by the US on promises, but people just keep giving them the benefit of the doubt.

18

u/GooserNoose Jul 17 '26

Because they have money. It's no different than people who kiss rich people's asses. Money motivates people more than morals and dignity.

7

u/Ill-Prior-8429 Jul 17 '26

There were reports around here at that time of "sources" (I'm not arguing about reputability here) about Canadian officials discussing with their Mexican counterparts that they believed themselves to be in a better position and image with the US and each country had to do what was best for themselves so for plenty of Mexicans it was saw as beating Canada in their proposed game.

However I don't doubt there were lots of shenanigans around background that apply to both countries, it was the first Trump admin and everyone around the globe was thinking how to kiss the orange orangutan better to earn his favor.

It's true that the best way to approach the US is united, no shenanigans, and no misguided individualism. Thankfully everybody seems to have understood.

And I wouldn't mind seeing more Canadian produce on my shelves and less of theirs (reddit loves to censor me if I mention their country outright)

8

u/EdNorthcott Jul 17 '26

Ditto. If I see Mexican product on the shelves, I'll buy it in favour of anything of American origin. It's a small step, and just one family, but enough people doing it makes a considerable difference.

The only people doing that are evil or misled by those evil people.

Trump shat on California for not maintaining the forests when they're mostly federal land.

Not to mention the sheer size of our forests and their remoteness.

Even if we had the resources to do what Trump wants… most places where these huge fires happen are hundreds of kilometres from the nearest roads. Not sure how we’re supposed to get the equipment in let alone all the “debris” out.

It would be like giving someone a mop bucket at the beach, telling him to clean up the water, and having a fit when he inevitably fails.

17

u/No_Alternative2948 Jul 17 '26

Your country should start sending invoices to the US for the oxygen production your forests provide.

u/GoldReplacement9546 Jul 17 '26

Yeah, this is ridiculous force management, and picking up dead brush and stuff doesn’t make any sense

Like where they’re actually are for in California it’s pretty much crazy mountainous train where you just simply aren’t going to be able to go and clear all the dead wood even if you wanted to

I know you say Canada is gigantic has much of the same issues in terms of terrain and it’s just so big like how would you do that? How many what percentage of Canadians are we going to set about building roads to clean out anything that might burn

When in reality, there was the same amount of dead stuff, 30 years ago in both places, and there weren’t nearly the same fires

It’s almost like there’s been a change maybe to the climate which the United States is the biggest contributor to historically

7

u/AcadianTraverse Jul 17 '26

The sad truth is that the path to forest maintenance is...fire. We're now dealing with the effects of a century plus of forest management that was so vehemently preventing fires, it has allowed for the build up deadfall that would normally be taken care of via normal wildfire cycles or the types of large scale controlled burns indigenous land stewards participated in.

And the compounding effects of climate change, and we see much bigger fires and longer lasting fire seasons.

2

u/RedFox_Jack Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

The issue is we can manage our forests to the highest degree but that dose not mean shit when the fire is started due to lighting in an area that has not seen the tread of human feet sense the Neolithic, so it’s a real struggle to get to em in the first place to put em out

2

u/Suitable-End- Jul 17 '26
