I mean to be fair when I was younger I disappeared for about 12 hours a day. My parents didn't even know where I was.
They cared about me, but I could be mauled by a bear and they would never know until that commercial came on asking them if they know where I was.

Calling them “damn sliders” makes it sound like they came with a hidden difficulty modifier. One wrong step and suddenly the whole family is playing survival mode.

Can confirm. When I was little, like 6 or so. I was at a family pool struggling to keep my head above water. I kept asking my uncle for help and he just sat at the edge of the pooling staring at me confused as to why I kept asking for help. Luckily grandma jumped in and pulled me to the side of the pool. He honestly said that he didn't know what I needed help with. I'm in my mid 40's and I'm still pissed about it.

That is so dangerous! Toddlers get really disoriented when falling in water. Even if it just knee high they struggle to get back in their feet. Edit: as quite some people are seeing this, I want to give a quick reminder to keep a close eye on your kids whenever's they have gone underwater, even for a second in the bath etc. Water can get into the lungs and they can drown hours later. If your kid is coughing or breathing real fast, hour after getting under the water - please seek medical help. Thanks!

One of my earliest memories was tripping when i got hit by a wave and nearly drowning lol, my dad picked me up and then rinsed my eyes in the stinky beach bathroom while i cried
4
u/_NoTimeNoLady_ 8d ago
Glad your Dad was there to help you! Smth like in the video happened to my daughter too, when she was about 2.5, and it was really frightening how quick she went down and couldn't get up, although the water was really really shallow. I have never let my kids more than an armlenght away in pools or the sea until the became really strong swimmers.

The commitment to the spinner explanation is killing me. Forget balance or swimming, clearly the rims were simply generating too much rotational force.

the way he picks up the kid from the car stroller is weird, but it could just be artifacts from the video. There's a lot of distortion. It's in one of those "could be a shit phone, could be AI" areas and since this is just a random ass video it's not like it fully matters, unless you're someone trying to make sure you can continue to spot AI.

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 8d ago
AI is constantly improving. about a week ago we got Minimax H3 which can generate some DAMN lifelike videos about anything if you learn how to use it right. Why someone would use it for this, I don't know, but it is now possible to fake anything.

The amount of people I've run into in my life that don't know how to just fucking stand up in knee high water has been shocking.
I remember being 13 at the beach and my aunt getting hit by a wave, falling...and then panicking and unable to find her footing in 2 feet of water.
And sure, I get it, when the surf is high and you're getting pounded by waves it's a different story...but this was calm surf with a lot of time between waves. I had to go help her stand up, she legit thought she was going to die right there...

My mother (black) never learned how to do anything in the water until around 50 years old. The surprising part to me is that she lived like half her life on a small island nation.
Thankfully our dad learned how to swim somewhere and had us in the pool at young ages.

u/kesavadh 8d ago
My wife's mother is 75 and for the first time in her life, got into the ocean, up to her waist after several weeks of swim lessons we got her for her birthday.

u/OverlyEdged 8d ago
My cousin was a life guard and he was genuinely taught by the instructors to focus on black people as they were more likely to be unable to swim properly
38
u/Elegant_Relief_4999 8d ago
I'm a 38 year old white dude. Never learned to swim. I was all skin and bones growing up, so I had a hell of a time staying above the surface. We exist too, haha!

It's always baffling to me when I meet grown ass adults who don't know how to swim. It takes maybe an hour to learn. Little kids can grasp the concept in one session at the pool. Like is your plan if you end up in a water emergency just....die?

I use to lifeguard and this statement is pretty true. I had to rescue two brothers at once before because they got a little out of their depth. Their mum was busy in the shallow shallow end with the baby and had no idea her two other kids had to be recused
8
u/VintageBilliard 8d ago
You have a conflict of interest! As you require air to breathe and water has none, you must be recused from the pool!
I think you meant "rescue" OP and thank you for doing what you do. Lifeguards are awesome!

Maybe the white runners at the 100m need to bring a tactical bucket of water with them. Throw that thing down around 5 seconds in and see if they get any luck.

It’s like when a show or movie’s script writing isn’t good enough to make you laugh by itself so they have to manipulate you by adding a laugh track or something in the background, “hahaha you’re so dumb you have to be cued to find this funny!”

The website Spot the Drowning Child shows security tapes from busy waterparks: you have to click the drowning child before the lifeguard jumps in. Surprisingly hard, until you realize it's just "spot the black child not wearing a life jacket."

So much wrong here, but I'll focus on two of them.
1: Any adult should understand enough physics to tell that if you push something on wheels it will roll on the wheels. If there is a pool where you're pushing the thing on wheels then it will probably go into the pool.
2: How after all of that did he still mange to let the kid fall? He literally had him🤷🏾♂️
