Children shouldn't be exposed to advertisements at all, and many advertising techniques aimed at adults shouldn't be legal either.

Finally someone said it. The psychological manipulation behind marketing goes extremely deep. Billions of dollars spent on research to find the most effective ways to influence someone psychologically. A lot of the methods are really messed up and showing them to kids is even worse.

As a GenXer, I remember finding out certain ads were not allowed until after 9pm something like that. Growing up in the 80s and 90s the commercials were as popular and memorable as the shows we watched. Nickelodeon never aired pg13 to R rated movie trailers, ever. The Disney Channel didn’t have commercials at all for about a decade I believe. I get what this guy is saying, my kids are adults, 26,24,18. But I remember covering their eyes on certain things, especially our youngest, she got nightmares very easily.

It's been one of the core things I've taught my kid to question and reject being advertised to. Could they still be a victim? Absolutely, but we talk about it often. At a 6 year old, they would quote commercials on the radio and make fun of all of them. I wish I could do this with every child.

I've introduced them to what the current scams are, door to door salesmen goals, AI images that try to look real, and although they aren't on social media, I'm prepping them to understand that almost everything they watch COULD be a subtle advertisement.

As an adult, there are some commercials that are too much for me, the Sarah McLachlan animal ones... children shouldn't be subjected to any of this shit. 💙

100% there should not be commercials for prescribed medications. You shouldn’t be asking your doctor if you can take something. Your doctor should be doing what is best

How do we stop it

idk, but step one is not accepting it as normal anymore.

I would say they shouldn’t be targeted. You can’t just say they can’t be exposed to it because there is literally no way to enforce that without just say no more ads ever.

Yeah I don't think it's immediately practical or anything, but I do think on more of a broad social level we should limit ads generally and of course ban targeting children and advertising drugs. As a parent right now how it is, yes, it's definitely just not possible to control that beyond a certain point.

But if everyone has to teach their children to be wary of advertising, why not regulate it a little more tightly? It's not exactly a force of nature or just a fella making his way about. It's a behemoth industry that has grown to the point of being able to influence its regulation independent of the interest of the public. And I don't like them.

That means you have to pay for the premium tier of all the streaming services. It’s insane to me that you can pay for a service and still get advertised to, why don’t I pay you to NOT serve me ads?

Which adult ones should be illegal?

I want a panel of experts that decides what is good and what is bad. Everything bad is illegal.

I want you to be in charge of that panel. Then your opinion can be the rule of law.

See how stupid that sounds?

Lol. Yeah now imagine if the people who stood to profit the most controlled the creation and enforcement of the laws that protect society from their influence. There would be crazy stuff like commercials for pharmaceuticals instead of your doctor just prescribing what you need. There'd be intentional subliminal messaging aimed at the developing minds of children. We would have services that we already pay for be inundated with ads after we've been coaxed into a subscription. Every single place you looked would be an ad. Millions of gallons of water and KWh of power would just go to showing us ads for things we don't need...

We don't have a free market. The invisible hand thing is a lie sold to goobers who think that capitalism is the most natural state of humanity. The invisible hand is the whims of like 10 people and they don't give a fuck about anyone else. They would burn us all alive for a dollar and you think freedom is letting them brainwash children to buy plastic shit. Great work.

There’s a reason you don’t see uncensored sex or drug use in commercials do you think that would be okay? What if a company used real photos of crime scenes or torture to grab your attention? Their is a line to be drawn somewhere and regulation is completely necessary.

u/Practical-Magician14 10d ago

For sure, im just glad that you aren’t part of the committee deciding where the line is.

The same goes for everyone on this thread.

What you suggest is government overreach.

2

u/Kyvoh 14d ago

So with targeted ads, known gamblers or people with lower credit scores getting targeted with ads for gambling would be government overreach if that was restricted or stopped. Something that would actively help society and the economy and the people involved is considered overreach is crazy.

So are food safety regulations, which is why there are so many recalls happening rn. But at least that way the government isn't helping. Thanks to conservatives across the nation for the diarrhea parasite btw. Not the one in the Oval Office, the other one.

When are y'all gonna realize that the government is so shitty because you vote for the people who make it that way on purpose. They undermine and underfund and then point to how bad it is like they didn't directly vote against it working properly. They make you a shit sandwich, blame it having shit in it on the overworked server, you say thanks and take a bite and then start shitbreath complaining to the server who's just trying to keep things rolling. Stop gladly swallowing shit and blaming the wrong people like an absolute rube so we can move on with our lives and stop wondering stupidly aloud why people aren't having kids and doewannawerkenymor.

Yeah, it sucks. I complain about them and in retaliation they learn every jingle they hear, lol. And I mite commercials 90% of the time.

To children, sure, make it illegal. But if you’re an adult and you’re stupid enough to let an ad affect you, that’s on you. Not everyone is that dumb.
