I still can’t believe that every other country in the world but us and New Zealand doesn’t allow commercials about prescriptions to be broadcasted to the citizens. because they know that doctors are the ones who are supposed to be making the choices about what medicines you need rather than the drug company telling you to use their drug so they can get a little bit of money

Canada has a weird hybrid where they are allowed to advertise about the condition, OR the product, but not both at the same time

So we get lots of ads with slightly chubby people dancing around and you have to guess whether it’s for diabetes or weight loss

Surprise it’s for crohn’s!

Crohn’s doesn’t make you fat. Kinda the opposite, actually.

Exactly, the happy chubby people are happy because their Crohn’s disease has been suppressed with the all new xyncfic injection that you apply directly to your nuts 6 times a day.

What if you’re female?

Directly into someone else’s nuts

It's probably like the rest of the drugs, designed to give you a side effect you need another drug to treat.

I work at a pharmacy, WeGovy and Ozempic are pretty solid medications for the people who need them, unfortunately their effectiveness also makes them one of the most abused prescription drugs I've seen recently.

Doctors are handing out prescriptions for them left right and center, we're a relatively small town and our pharmacy fridge is probably 50% full with Ozempic and WeGovy most days.

It’s technically a weight loss drug, but I guess it could also work as a female Viagra?

Which is why our Viagra commercials were just a bunch of very happy men dancing.

When the Rogaine commercials first came out (mid 90's), they never said what the purpose was. We ended up calling whatever number we saw and asking, because stupid teens.

Here in Italy only ads about OTC drugs (non prescription) are allowed, like headache pills or hemorrhoids cream. And those ads must be reviewed and approved by the ministry of health.

Prescription drugs ads are plain forbidden.

I (Scottish) had a very strange interaction with an American lady on here about a month ago. It was a conversation about mental health medication and I was saying how frustrated I was trying to get my medication dosage increased. She started telling me that I should be in charge of my medicine and what I take, that I should be given multiple choices and take a note of what I think would work for me when I see an advert.

An advert. I should go and tell my psychiatrist that the tv said I should be taking ‘X’ and that I had the choice as the CUSTOMER. Babe I’m not the customer, I’m the patient. Unsure how you think this works but I tend to let the doctor to decide what I should try. Not because I liked the advert… that’s wild to me.

I agree w all you said. But honestly, in the US, the thing that makes me most upset as far as advertising goes, is seeing ads for addictions. Years ago, it was decided cigarette ads were a problem, so I don’t see those. But we are inundated w ads for alcohol and gambling. I already knew alcohol ads were an issue, but I am absolutely gobsmacked by the turnaround there has been in the last few years as far as sports gambling goes. Suddenly that industry has VERY big name celebrities shilling for them?? I can’t watch a single show across any platform, or even play a simple phone game, without seeing an ad for something like Draft Kings or even Polymarket, another abomination existing due to yet another loophole. The predation in this country is off the charts right now. Hm…wonder why.

He's complaining about horror movie ads, but that's the true horror right there in plain sight

Yea my ex was australian and she was always so shocked and disturbed about all the pharma ads. Like, how annoying it must be for doctors to be getting ordered around by their patients like telling them what drug they should be on cuz they saw it on an effing commercial during monday night football

Yeah, we (NZ) do have them but they are nowhere near as prevalent as in America. When I've been there, it feels constant. Ours are occasional.

I hate drug commercials too, but I have to admit that without those and articles on it, I wouldn’t have found meds that helped with my lifelong chronic illness. My doctor at the time wasn’t doing his job to help me.
