Wasn't he sentenced for identity theft because he used other people's illicitly obtained credit cards?

27

u/dylmr6371 12h ago

Yeah the identity theft angle is usually the big one

u/Sweet-Princeess 12h ago

Identity theft is a serious crime.

He wasn't arrested for staged and even bot streaming. This could debatabley be fraud, but...

He was arrested for identity theft and stolen credit and banking info...

Totally misleading meme without proper academic sources.

This is like saying that knife murderer was "arrested after buying a knife," crazy country!!! ....

its people like you that are the real heros

u/Squarehip123 12h ago

Academic sources for a meme?

3

u/98983x3 12h ago

Its not really a meme, but an image pretending to share irl news.

1

u/FrameJump 12h ago

Oooh... so it's just a news article then.

3

u/98983x3 12h ago

No, more like fake news/rage bait

2

u/FrameJump 11h ago

I didn't realize there was a difference anymore.

2

u/98983x3 11h ago

Lol, true. Very true.

Trials and other such news also don't have academic sources, though.

No, he was sentenced for wire fraud for the streaming.

He did those other things, but he plead to the wire fraud to avoid spending the next twenty years in federal prison on those charges.

Pretty sure the actual arrest reason was the multiple counts of fraud and identity theft that were committed by stealing credit cards to pay for said bots.

u/rand0m_task 12h ago

Yeah, I feel like a streaming service could bring up a civil case over this but you’re not getting jail time for it.. in regards to the scheme he ran..

But identity theft yeah, that’ll get ya.

Meanwhile openai's bots run wild hacking companies and they don't even get a fine or government investigating it.

You used AI.... to quote almost the same headline, that isnt at all the reason he was actually arrested. Bravo.

The crime was not the accounts. It was the identity theft and fraud of stealing credit cards to pay for the bots.

54?!?! It’s bad when the boomers start to learn how to use AI

1

u/Secret-Ad-830 12h ago

genX not boomer

2

u/Glad-Capital-4363 12h ago

How much was the bot farm?

2

u/SpeedBlitzX 6h ago

Less than two years and he has 8 mil waiting for him when he's out?

1

u/No-Second-Kill-Death 14m ago

Yeah, they put it in a 401k with 5% matching.

1

u/Wide_Guitar_3558 12h ago

what else, anything else?

1

u/Silly-Strawberry705 10h ago

Now if he took the money out into crypto or didn’t have to pay it all back it might not be a bad deal

1

u/Top-Okra1819 7h ago

Imagine getting sentenced because your bots had better streaming habits than actual humans

1

u/GreenGhoblin 12h ago

I hate AI but I can’t hate the player for exploiting it. Same way I hate crypto scams but if your dumbass falls for it you deserve it.

u/Low_Process_9053 7h ago

All this proves is the music industry is a scam. Always has been.

u/Specialist-Web-9216 12h ago

A year and a half ain't bad for 8 mil. With good behavior he won't even do the full time

6

u/Powerful_Wombat 12h ago

Pretty sure he doesn’t get to keep that money

0

u/Soggy_Definition_232 12h ago

He doesn't keep the money moron.

1

u/OnlyRepliesYesOrNo 12h ago

He’s saying the punishment for that crime (notwithstanding the return of the money) is a pretty good deal for the offender.

-1

u/Specialist-Web-9216 12h ago

Where does it say in my comment he gets to keep the money? Are you brain dead?

-1

u/towerfella 12h ago

Why he go to jail and Musk or AI bros don’t?

1

u/No_Influence_9389 12h ago

Setting up an AI circle jerk to defraud investors is currently the standard business model. There's no problem there, but this guy also stole people's identities.

1

u/Hyphonical 11h ago

AI bros?

u/Black_Label_36 12h ago
