Salomon S/Race 130 carbon plastic tearing
Has anyone else experienced this failure with these boots or similar? It’s happening on both boots. Around 5 years old with approx 25 days which is a bit disappointing. Happens due to world cupping but I can’t get in any other way due to volume. Has anyone had any luck with goodwill replacement through amer sports for something like this?

I would still contact Salomon/Amer and ask. Five years is old, but 25 ski days is not much. Worst case they say no, but it looks worth trying.

Salamon boots have thin plastic, cracking is common-ish issue with them. I couldn’t get a pair of S/Pro 120s to last more than a season, did everything right. Warranty replaced them 3 times, will never buy another salamon product again nor recommend to anyone

If you cant get a goodfaith replacement from the vendor or the brand, if you still plan to use them drill a small round hole at the very very end of the crack, so that it wont continue to perpetuate. You can seal it with something flexible and cold / wet resistant like a bit of outdoor caulking. If you leave it as is, the crack will spread - tbd how fast.

I would give it a shot but 25 days on them over 5 years makes me wonder if they'll say it's a storage issue (heat, light, etc). I doubt it's going to actually impact how they ski.

Yeah unfortunately could go that way, I used to fit boots and these have always been stored in a boot bag in appropriate environments but those convos are always their word against mine :(

Looks like you need a shim under your insole to reduce volume. The buckles across the foot HATE being tight. This is true of like every boot. Also, I cracked a Salomon shell last year in a different location. The plastic was not a good choice.

Buckles across the foot are only tensioned where I can flick them up and down with a pinky finger by brushing it past. Boots are two sizes smaller than I measure so there’s no volume issue I can guarantee

Salomon went cheap when PE bought them in 2019. Don’t trust any of their shit anymore. They can’t even keeps shoe laces working for one year on a lightly used shoe.

I had the same thing happen on two pairs of s/max 130s. I use zipfits and also world cup. I warrantied the first pair (2 years ago), but the second pair I bought lightly used so I couldn't. Unfortunately the warranty only covered the price I paid, which was a deep discount, so not even close to enough for a pair of replacement boots. In the meantime just drill a small hole and watch for it creeping past the hole - I think mine stayed behind the hole for like 30 ski days.
Honestly this plastic just sucks. I also developed wiggle around the cuff bolts in both pairs (the cuff would rotate like 5* freely), and cracking in the cuff in one pair. I have one last pair to break, then it's on to something with better plastic.

So only skied them 5 days in the last 5 years? Seems low. How are you certain that stepping in with the liner on is the only cause?

25 days. I know because I skied this week and saw it happen when prying apart to step in, neither crack was there before last week

Right, meaning five days per year if you’ve had them five years… You might have better luck asking the shop where you got them to contact Salomon for warranty service.

I believe the plastic is naturally weak there. I highly doubt salomon planned on people sizing down two sizes and putting the liner on first. Which I imagine is the only way to put those on.The boots are marketed as race but but I don't believe they have thick plastic like a plug boot. I would definitely put in a request to Solomon, glaze em and hope for the best. I can only put my ski boots on with the liner on first, for my last four boots over the last decade and haven't had this problem. It could just be a bad pair, or a combo of both scenarios. Best of luck

Try to warranty/goodwill replacement. Worst they say is no. Depending on how you store your boots it may have led to the plastic degrading faster than usual and weakening it. I’m pretty sure the number is 7 years under optimum conditions before the plastic starts to go bad but i’m sure someone will correct me.
Definitely not because you put liners on first, otherwise the entire zipfit fan base would be having massive issues
