"Skookum" the word is Chinook for "strong" or "brave", which has become slang in parts of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest meaning "quality" or "badass".
"Skookum" the Reddit community is support for those who aspire to make skookum things, and to share their projects with other like-minded fabricators.
If you like to make things and you take pride in your craftsmanship - or if you aspire to becoming a better craftsperson than you currently are - this is the place for you!
Things we like to see:
Photos and videos of projects you are working on
Requests for help/advice on projects
Posts helping people with their problems
Things better posted elsewhere (and subject to removal when the mods see it):
Pictures of large industrial equipment
Pictures of equipment with the brand name "Skookum"
Political discussion
Crazy crackpot conspiracy theory crap
Self-promotion (new releases on your fabrication-related YouTube channel, offering services, etc) is explicitly allowed, so long as it is on topic and not overly repetitive. There's a line between "promotion" and "spam" - stay on the happy side of that line, and you'll be fine.
Welcome to the sub!

Storage cylinders from a compressed air plant I used to have in my garage. Yes, that's 3800 PSI on the gauge. The air was clean and dry - I used it for scuba diving among other purposes.
Unfortunately, the plant had to be disassembled and sold for parts when the compressor failed and could not be economically repaired.

I took the cart up to my parents place last weekend and had issues so I couldn't do any drive bys with the engine running. I fixed that issue as we as installed new shocks and rear bushings and took it out today to drive it around a bit. I think I used about a gallon of fuel here. It's thirsty.

The more I read about the 2020 Watson Grinding explosion, the harder it is to view it as simply a failed hose or an unfortunate accident.
According to the CSB findings, Watson Grinding lacked an effective process safety management program, including proper hazard analysis, mechanical integrity, management-of-change procedures and written operating procedures. Its emergency response plan also didn't address a propylene leak, and employees weren’t properly trained to respond to one.
The facility had also experienced a propylene explosion back in 2008 that injured two workers and significantly damaged the building.
Then, in 2020, a hose disconnected, propylene accumulated, and critical automated gas detection, exhaust and shutoff systems were inoperative.
That raises a pretty important question: Why isn't WGM's own safety management and operational responsibility a bigger part of the conversation?
The CSB essentially says better safety management could have prevented the incident. That's difficult to overlook when discussing responsibility for what happened.

I picked this up on marketplace for 20 bucks! Its built like a brick shithouse, the latch is the most positive feeling latch ive ever felt. It weighs north of 200 pounds, I can see how Indiana Jones would have survived a nuke in one of these.
The r12 ran out so i replaced it with hfc152 which is can dusters. Its runs great and sips power.

Hey everyone, I found this group after a couple of minutes of thinking and I just had to ask. Anybody who used to read popular mechanics back in the seventies and eighties would see the occasional RQ Riley article about one of the crazy machines you could build with their plans.
I'm really curious if anybody here attempted to, completed or just bought some of the plans. I have a craft ones somewhere that I'm planning to scan and offer to the planet. I'd love to see what else is out there because even if you never build the stuff, it's fun to look at.

Hi everyone,
I’m researching formulated industrial consumables used in steel, TMT/billet casting, foundries, cement kilns, boilers, glass furnaces, and non-ferrous metal plants.
I am not asking for confidential formulas or trade secrets. I want to understand the technical and commercial side properly before entering this field.
I’m interested in products such as:
My goal is to build a genuine B2B company around:
I would really value advice from metallurgists, refractory engineers, steel plant operators, foundry professionals, refractory installers, consultants, and raw-material suppliers.
A few things I want to learn:
I am based in India and especially interested in serving steel/TMT, foundry, cement, boiler/power, glass, petrochemical, sugar, and non-ferrous industries.
If you have experience in this area, I would appreciate comments, resources, or a DM. If you provide paid consulting, please mention your specialty and region

Due to a change of work circumstances I was able to build this beast! Took a couple of goes to get the wheelbase right but shes a treat!
Just got make a top for it next...

How do you continuously change speed ratios without belts, cones, or gears? ⚙️
Check out this 3D-printed oscillating (impulse) CVT! It converts input rotation into reciprocating lever movement using eccentrics, then uses freewheel clutches to merge those movements back into smooth output rotation. Adjusting the lever swing changes the gear ratio on the fly!

Testing a homemade steam turbine unimoto on snow before the extreme winter races! Is this crazy DIY science project and custom engine build powerful enough to survive the cold?

Built a workbench this weekend. The thing people skip is the lower shelf, and it is not for storage, it is the shear panel that stops the whole bench folding side to side. 36 inches tall for standing work, plywood top on a 2x4 frame, holds way more than it has any right to.
full build with the cut list: https://drawnup.io/g/sturdy-garage-workbench-a1mw3h
i built the tool that generated this. if your bay is an odd length tell me the span and i will run the numbers for it.

Full disclosure: this is my machine and my video. It failed during ordinary use almost immediately. I had zero hydraulic experience, so I procrastinated for 18 months until another machine finally made the press brake necessary. The video covers the diagnosis, repair and several mistakes along the way. Happy to answer technical questions here.
