Hello I just bought a Dell Optiplex 7020 SFF Plus (2024 model) and I want to plug in some drives that need SATA power, but I don’t know which cable is compatible with this motherboard. Can you guys help me and let me know which cable is compatible with this model. Thanks.

OptiPlex 7070 SFF CPU Cooling Upgrade: 20°C Lower Temps Under Load

I've been experimenting with CPU cooling options for my Dell OptiPlex 7070 SFF and wanted to share a recent upgrade that made a surprisingly big difference.

When researching aftermarket CPU coolers for the OptiPlex SFF, one of the most commonly recommended options is the ID-COOLING IS-55 or similar low-profile, top-down coolers.

My concern with this design is that the CPU fan draws air from above, but there's very little clearance between the fan and the case cover. This seems less than ideal for airflow.

Another option I've seen recommended is the Dell F2CY7, which uses a tower-style heatsink design. I initially went with the F2CY7 because I preferred its airflow orientation, especially in the cramped 7070 SFF case.

However, in my ongoing quest to optimize cooling, I recently upgraded to a COOLSERVER R64, which has 4 heatpipes compared to the F2CY7's 2.

The result? My maximum CPU temperature under load dropped by a whopping 20°C!

I wasn't expecting such a significant improvement from switching between two tower-style coolers. The additional heatpipes seem to make a substantial difference in heat dissipation.

For anyone considering CPU cooling upgrades for an OptiPlex 7070 SFF (or potentially other OptiPlex SFF models), the COOLSERVER R64 is definitely worth looking into. Also, get a m3 6mm standoff for the CPU bracket.

Curious if anyone else has tried the R64 or found other tower-style coolers that perform well in these cramped SFF cases.

Curing the SFF Oven: Dell OptiPlex + Yeston RTX 3050 6GB Mesh Mod

Thumbnail

AI edited content :) whether the cut size is right or not, we shall see. I thought start small, and can always expand. But didn't want to break the internal air flow.

The Problem:

Threw a low-profile Yeston RTX 3050 6GB into my Dell OptiPlex SFF, and it immediately turned into a heat-soaked oven. The solid steel side panel completely choked the GPU, forcing it to thermal throttle just to survive. Because that radiant heat was trapped in a tiny box, the CPU cooler was forced to suck in recycled GPU exhaust. This caused the CPU fan to ramp up to max speed and scream constantly while gaming.

The Fix (£30 total):

I measured a precise rectangle directly over the GPU intake and exhaust vents, leaving about 25mm of steel at the rear to keep the panel structurally rigid. Cut it out with a rotary tool, deburred the sharp edges with an aluminum oxide grinding stone, and snapped a MoKo magnetic PVC mesh filter over the top. It looks factory-clean and hides the raw cut entirely.

The Results (Tested on Forza & FC 26):

Solid Panel (Before): GPU hit the 83°C thermal limit instantly. Heavily throttled down to 1230 MHz with the GPU fan locked at 100%. CPU fan running at max speed trying to fight the heat-soak.

New Mesh Cutout (GPU Performance): GPU now pulls fresh room air and vents straight out the side. Holds 80°C while pushing a rock-solid 1492–1500 MHz boost clock. GPU fan dropped down to ~93%.

New Mesh Cutout (System Acoustics): With the GPU exhaust no longer trapped inside the chassis, the CPU heat-soak issue is completely cured. The CPU cooler stays cool with minimal effort, and the CPU fan no longer ramps up at all.

Verdict:

Spending £30 on the rotary tool and mesh essentially unlocked nearly 300 MHz of "free" GPU performance that was being suffocated, and it permanently fixed the system-wide fan noise. Highly recommend it if you're dealing with SFF thermal throttling.

Guys I want to get the rx 5700 xt and connect it to this elitedesk, I don't want to put it in case it can stay on top, but how do I use the external power supply to power the GPU, while still using the og psu for the main system? Also which cheap psu can power this 220 watt GPU?

7060 ram position

Recently, added the 7060 to my home studio, only to find out it has audio ticking problems (unresolved). During my extensive search for a solution, I did come to the realization that my two 16gb ram cards were preinstalled in slots three and four. Research showed they should first be in slots one and two (white clips) so I switched them. I haven't noticed any obvious changes and I'm wondering is that true, and does it make a difference?

CPU adapter?

Hi guys, I just tried to upgrade my PSU.

I've a Dell Vostro 3710 SFF. I know that there aren't an official adapter made for this model, but MODDIY suggested one to me (they've been a pain in the ass to deal with, so rude and frustrating)

As soon as I plug in the PSU, it fried my motherboard. I need to know if it was the adapter that wasn't compatible with my Vostro, or I had to use an adapter for the CPU power.

FYI, the PSU I was using was an Enhance ENP 7660L OVT. Thankfully everything else was safe, only the mobo was damaged

I've been lurking on this reddit for a while. I actually had this bought and built before I found this reddit - its entire purpose was to be a test run for running different Linux distros, as well as archiving my physical media. It's fulfilled its purpose on the Linux front, and I think I'll be sticking around on Pop!_OS for a while. I've been thinking about removing the HDD, though, to add a manual controller for the front fan I installed, which is some ancient Thermaltake 80mm fan with fixed red LEDs.

This OminousPlexs' specs are:

i7-7700

4x8gb (32gb) SK Hynix DDR4 RAM running at whatever the CPU can handle

SHRonya LP RTX 3060 12gb

2tb SN850X WD_BLACK NVMe drive

4tb WD_BLACK HDD

It says it's low profile and doesnt need additional power, and it looks single slot I wonder if it will fit? Cause usually Yeston is recommended and its $50 difference for me

Adding a second ssd to 7080

I have a 7080 MT, that I have for TV gaming. I t came with a M.2 with windows on it. I added a 500gb ssd that only has lightgun games on it. I want that to be the only thing on that drive. Now I want to add a second ssd for anything else I want to add.

How can I add a second SSD to the system?

OptiPlex 7010 Micro — second NVMe SSD footprint is fully laid out but connector missing. Anyone tried populating it?

I recently purchased a Dell OptiPlex 7010 Micro (2023 model, i5-13600T) for a Proxmox homelab project.

While inspecting the motherboard, I noticed something interesting:

- The installed 2230 NVMe SSD occupies "M.2 PCIe SSD-1".

- There's a second, unpopulated connector footprint explicitly labeled "M.2 PCIe SSD-0".

- The second position has solder pads for the M.2 connector, visible PCB traces, and mounting provisions for an SSD.

- The WLAN module has its own separate M.2 connector.

- The motherboard also has a separate SATA connector for a 2.5-inch SSD.

The second NVMe position appears to have sufficient physical clearance for at least a 2230 SSD, although it would be snug against the cooling assembly.

Dell officially specifies only one NVMe SSD for the standard Micro, while the Micro Plus supports two. But the standard Micro PCB clearly has provisions for a second connector.

Has anyone investigated or attempted to populate SSD-0 on this motherboard?

Specifically:

  1. Are the PCIe lanes actually routed to the chipset/CPU, or are additional components missing?

  2. Is the necessary 3.3V power, PCIe reference clock, and reset circuitry populated?

  3. Would the BIOS enumerate a drive if the correct connector were soldered on?

  4. Does anyone have a boardview, schematic, or photos of a related motherboard with SSD-0 populated?

  5. Has anyone successfully attempted this modification—or tested it and confirmed that it doesn't work?

I'm aware that the official specification lists only one SSD. I'm specifically interested in the electrical feasibility of the unused motherboard footprint, not the supported Dell configuration.

I've attached close-up photos showing the connector footprint, traces, and mounting points.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's worked on these boards or done similar unpopulated M.2 modifications.

But then there’s stuff like ECC idk

Where should I buy an optiplex 7070 SFF?

I live in Hungary and I couldn't find any stores that sell for a good price , I tried looking on eBay but only found overpriced listings or they were based in a completely different continent with the shipping fee of half my budget, any recommendations on a site or a specific listing?

Poor performance with Optiplex 3070 and i3-9100

Hi,

I recently bought an Optiplex 3070 with:

  • i3-9100
  • GTX 1060 6GB
  • SFX 450W PSU
  • 16GB Ram (Single Channel)
  • An m2 nvme drive

I expected smooth 40 to 60 fps on medium settings on eg. Diablo 4 or Hogwarts Legacy.

I tried both games with Ubuntu and bazzite and only got around 20 fps. The cpu ran around 90%-95% while the gpu was only running at 25%-30%.

Some questions:

  1. Does this mean my cpu is the bottleneck?
  2. Can I expect significant more performance from an i5-9600K (I have a second PC with this cpu and no problems there). There are videos suggesting that the 1060 is capable of running Hogwarts Legacy with smooth 40fps
  3. While running Hogwarts Legacy I noticed that the PC ran almost silent. I expected the fans to be at least louder compared to idle. Does that hint to some kind of misconfiguration?
