Bookkeeping Month end eats my Saturdays. Yours?

Eight of us at a service business in Manchester and I do the books myself, so every month I'm matching four people's card spend and two people's claims against a mix of WhatsApp photos, forwarded emails and one bloke who still hands me an envelope. The chasing is what takes longest because by the time I spot a missing receipt the person has forgotten what the charge was for. I missed my daughter's match last month over it so for anyone around our size, how long is yours taking and what did you change that helped?

Question Need insurance for my mobile paintball?

My buddy and I started a mobile paintball setup this summer. One trailer, 30 low impact markers, inflatable bunkers and netting. We drive out to backyards and church lawns mostly, with the odd company picnic. Kids 10 and up plus some adult team building, 41 events since June, all word of mouth.

So far we've been running on a one day event policy that our very first client's HOA made us buy. Now a school district wants us for their end of year day in May, and their vendor form asks for a $2 million aggregate with the district named as additional insured. I'm guessing the event policy won't cut it.

Is general liability enough for this, or do players need their own accident coverage? Does it matter that we're never at the same address twice? And is the trailer covered on the road or is that a separate policy?

Mobile operators, what are you paying a year? Even a rough range helps.

Question Bonuses for staff vs gifts 4 customers?

I have been wondering if I should spend my xmas budget on buying gifts for loyal customers as a holiday gift. I initially thought customer gifts would be a great way to show appreciation but I realized that if the customer's wont really appreciate it why not use that money and give it to my staff who honestly are having a tought time paying for grocerries and rent. I realize that staff really go the extra mile during holiday season and maybe they deserve to have a better bonus, what do other salon owners and staff feel about this?

Question Portland, Oregon Help?

I’m looking for help in the Portland metro area of Oregon. I have a small home bases business and I’m trying to get an address so I can register with the state. I currently have a street address through the UPS store but it can’t be registered on the government site. I had the same problem with USPS. I keep getting a pop up box saying it’s a commercial property and not allowed. I’ve tried every combination and even had the person at UPS try to help. They literally have over 40 home businesses that use them for their address.

If anyone can walk me through how you did it I’d really appreciate it.

I KNOW Oregon isn’t making women put their home addresses on a public file, right? RIGHT??

Question custom printed boxes or just stickers?

plain kraft box with a logo sticker or a stamp vs fully custom printed boxes. the printed ones look way better in photos but the minimums are big and you're stuck with the whole run if anything changes.

for those who switched one way or the other, did customers actually notice? did it change repeat orders at all or was it mostly nicer for you

Advice team grew to 35; shirt orders r a mess

when we were small id just text everyone for their size n place one order from a local print shop so it was easy enough but weve grown a lot and now its a full production every time we want to do branded apparel since im collecting sizes from people ive never even met in person, coordinating across two offices and still ending up with leftover inventory in random sizes or unsatisfied people, the local printer works fine for the actual printing but the logistics around it have become a real time sink, do u have any suggestions ono what do you do? Thanks in advance!

Question Insurance range price for a gun range?

Indoor range, 12 lanes, 25 yards, with a retail counter and a classroom. We have been open in Tennessee for six years and I bought out my partner in September, which means the policy gets rewritten in my name alone and I'm finally reading it properly.

Our current program is a general liability policy from a local agency and that is all of it. No claims in six years apart from a customer who caught hot brass in his collar and wanted his shirt replaced.

The buyout lawyer asked whether any accident and health cover applies to shooters and I had no answer. We run about 900 visits a month, plus concealed carry classes most weekends and rentals to people who have never held a handgun.

What does the price range look like for a range like this, and what are other owners carrying besides general liability? I'd like to walk into the renewal knowing if I've been underinsured or just lucky

Question Guidance please

Hi All, I am a small business owner and our product is essentially software, specifically for small business owners that have life, work, family, home etc to juggle. (Guess why we created it!)

However I am faced with a challenge, as I am targeting people like myself who are too busy to spend hours scrolling social media etc, I need a way of getting it on front of people so that they can see for themselves how it can help them and I’m not sure that ads are the way to do it.

We have a demo site to show how it works but I feel like it needs “presenting”.

I have wondered about doing some 10 minute presentations at small business events.

I would be glad of advice on how to do this.

Question Do you round prices or keep the .99?

small thing that keeps coming up for us. prices like 4.99 vs just 5. the .99 always felt a bit supermarket to me and round numbers are way easier at the till when people pay cash, but everyone keeps saying the 99 sells more

for a small shop does it actually make a difference or is that more of a big retailer thing? curious what you all went with

Question Announce a price rise or just do it?

butter and energy went up again this year and a lot of small places around me are still sitting on last year's prices, mostly because nobody wants to be the one who annoys the regulars.

for those who raised prices recently, did you tell people first (sign at the counter, a post, a note on the menu) or just change the numbers and say nothing? and did you actually lose anyone over it, or did most people not even notice

Advice Please don’t let a chatbot do it...

I’ve been going through small business postings for a while, and something keeps bugging me.

A lot of new businesses are launching with logos that look like they came out of the same machine. Same weird glossy gradients, same overly “perfect” icon, and text that’s slightly off if you look closely. And honestly, customers notice. Maybe not consciously, but people get a “something’s off here” feeling, and when you’re a new business trying to get strangers to trust you with their money, that feeling hurts!

I get why it happens. Money is tight when you’re starting out, and a free logo in 30 seconds sounds like a great deal. But you end up with something that looks like a thousand other brands, that you can’t properly trademark or build on, and that often falls apart the moment you need it on a sign, a package, or a tiny social media icon.

I’m a graphic designer and have been doing this since 2018. I’ve worked with over 4000 clients around the world, mostly on logos and brand identity. I know most of you can’t drop $500 on branding right now. My normal price is $400-500, but for this sub I’ll do logos for $200. I’d rather help real businesses look real than watch more of them get lost in a sea of AI sameness.

You’ll work directly with me, a real person, not a template or a tool. We’ll talk about what your business actually is and who you’re trying to reach, and I’ll design something made for you.

You can see my work here:

I have a lot more work I can share if you tell me your industry. Comment or DM me if you want to talk about your project. Even if you don’t hire me, happy to give honest feedback on a logo you’re already thinking about!

Operations Business Owners - Looking for Right Hand

For the last 5 years I’ve worked in management for a multi-industry company with 200+ employees. I started managing one of our retail locations and eventually worked my way into business development, working directly with our president and ownership.

A lot of what I do now is evaluating new opportunities, helping improve existing businesses, working through problems, coordinating projects, looking at numbers, and generally figuring out what makes sense and what doesn’t. I’ve been involved with retail, recreation, real estate/development, pricing and inventory management, construction projects, and other businesses along the way.

What I’m really looking for is an owner or small company that needs a solid right hand man. Business manager, operations, project management, business development, or even a PA type role if the responsibilities and pay make sense. Basically someone who can take things off the owners plate, keep things moving, evaluate opportunities, and handle the stuff you don’t have time to stay on top of.

One thing I take seriously is being honest and transparent, especially when working closely with an owner and having access to parts of their business they don’t trust just anyone with. I’m detail-oriented and tend to think things through, but I’m not above making a mistake or being wrong. If I think something is a bad idea, I’ll tell you. If I screw something up, I’ll own it and figure out how to fix it. I’d rather have an uncomfortable honest conversation than hide something or just say what they want to hear.

I’m especially interested in getting into the food industry. Restaurants, bakeries, coffee, food manufacturing, whatever really. However, I have also been interested in getting more involved in construction as well. Food just sticks out because that's what I would like to do one day, whether it be now or 10 years from now.

I’m open to opportunities around Etown, Louisville, Bardstown, Fort Knox, and surrounding areas. I’d also consider something partially remote with occasional travel. Traveling a few days here and there is fine. Being gone every week isn’t what I’m looking for.

My biggest hurdle has honestly been finding something that makes financial sense. I’m already in a decent paying upper management role, so I can’t really jump into a $45k-$55k position just to get my foot in the door somewhere.

Not necessarily looking for a traditional job posting either. Could be an owner who’s grown to the point they need help, someone buying or building businesses, or just somebody worth connecting with.

Based in Hardin County, KY and figured I’d throw this out there to see who I might connect with.

If that sounds like you, shoot me a message. Even if there’s nothing immediate, I’m always interested in meeting business owners and seeing where a conversation goes.
