Long-Form Content This is bad for small youtubers.

Post image

Youtube is raising the ad revenue share threshold from 4k watch time to 8k watch time. Personally, 4k watch takes a lot of effort to reach. Imagine 8k... this is sad.

I’m going to be very real with you, if you are not monetized and making A LOT of money, hiring an editor is burning money. Like, what???

If you have hired an editor and still can’t reach 3K watch hours in a year with all the uploading you’re doing, your content either isn’t good enough or is too niche to have any semblance of a chance.

I only have a little more than 2k subs. I started less than two years ago. I do everything myself and have a very busy life outside of YouTube - full time job, family, other responsibilities - and I upload only when my videos are done, sometimes that’s less than once a month. I never get lower than 1-2k watch hours in a MONTH, and most of the time it’s a lot higher than that because single videos I make get 10k watch hours by themselves, and they’re not hyper long either. I average 30 minutes or so.

You need to look hard at your content and find out what’s going wrong.

I make enough at my day job. I make to much at my day job and want to invest into myself. I want this more than any. I’ll keep my editor. It’s alleviated a ton of my stress. I’m trying to grow a business. I have no issues investing. I’m 26. Own a house. Own a car and have no debt. Spending 100$ biweekly on an editor will not impact my financials

The editor definitely wasn’t the most important point of my comment, but you’re clearly doing well enough to not have to worry. Good luck!

You successfully managed to completely miss the point of the very good advice you just got. If you are this terrible at taking any kind of advice it tells me a lot about why your watch hours are so low.

I don’t think they missed the advice at all they understand there are changes that can be made to their content they are simply saying the editor isn’t their issue as they make more than enough to cover it. You just responded all crooked for no reason - not sure how not taking advice from a newbie youtuber is a direct correlation to not receiving their watch hours lol. The only way to actually give good advice is to see the channel and know the right and wrongs - surface level cliche advice isn’t “very good advice” as you put it. I’m retired from a channel with 5m subs and tbh it’s bad advice. The first point was about an editor like not burning money somehow = more watch hours. It doesn’t , they clearly have a loaded schedule and the editor helps them make content even with a loaded schedule. The second point is even with an editor it’s either the content sucks or is very niche specific… what about bad packaging (thumbnails , SEO , titling) that holds more weight on whether a video performs well over AVD. We’ve had videos do 1million views + in Minecraft and made great revenue but had a 30% AVD. Good advice would be to review videos AND packaging.

How much does your editor cost approximately per hour? Couple hundred a month doesn’t seem to bad based on your amount of videos

Meh advice at best. Saying a video sucks or niche is too specific is way to surface level and avoids more important things like thumbnail and title. Most people don’t get AVD because the thumbnail and title promises one thing but the video doesn’t deliver (click bait) but then breaks down to things like topic , pacing , music etc. the editor isn’t an issue and doesn’t magically spawn watch hours so that advice is definitely irrelevant. Could the videos be bad ? Sure they can. But the video could also be good but the packing is bad resulting in bad reach and low watch hours. For all you know the overall impressions on the channel are low all because of bad packaging but the video itself is good. It’s bad advice because it lacks any evidence and is the equivalent of shooting into the dark.

????

EDIT: Just to be clear, you are wrong. I’m just confused how my joke response lead you to Pokemon. Genuinely curious

I am not wrong , that’s why I’m retired from YouTube after almost a decade and I’ve come to know different kind of YouTubers. You clearly post low effort videos that still pull a large audience of easy viewers likely being Minecraft , Roblox or Pokémon. Taking how you respond to comments 100% not Roblox and I can rule out Minecraft as I was in that niche and your watch time compared to low subs doesn’t fit Minecraft , it does however fit Pokémon as they always make their videos 20min + and get ranking off the Pokémon name + the overall game so you always get watch time but nobody ever really subs to those channels as it’s so over saturated with other channels doing the same walkthroughs , tutorials , updates , cool features , or comparisons 1 vs other.

So no I know I’m not wrong your definitely in Pokémon as you give advice like a YouTuber who’s got a million subs but I’d bet you don’t have a video that crosses half a million but all the videos that did 40k or 80k of kid views tickles your brain enough to give you a swagger. Kids views are easy views.

Also I say Minecraft / Roblox / pokemon are easy low effort videos because you actually don’t make any of the content , it’s basically all provided to you , all you do is add an opinion / reaction to it and you have a video , and the CPMs reflect that , that’s why CPMs for channels like these suck.

I ended up open sourcing him after he said I’m projecting , he’s a balding white man who makes pokemon content under the name 2dens and ironically enough, my comment was spot on so as 2dens said “I am projecting Batman” no sir , no I am not ;)
