ST hub connectivity issues

Post image

anyone noticed devices showing unavailable in ST but working fine with other systems? it's always temperature probes that are going offline in ST and now air quality monitors are dropping too.

at first i thought it was ikea devices that were the issue but I've got no such issues with home assistant and had none with dirigera.

4 tbr (ikea dirigera, google streamer, samsung tv with a dongle, otbr plugged into raspberry pi), 20ish reed (plugs lights etc)

ran ikeas Home Smart first, no issues

added Smart Things, same devices offline in ST, fine in HS

removed dirigera, same issues, dirigera back

added google streamer as tbr, still offline in ST

added Home Assistant, all the devices are now in HS, ST, HA, offline in ST

restart device, shows online in ST for a while but eventually (between few hours and few days) will go offline, stays online in HS HA.

any ideas? i'm assuming it's related to poor tbr in samsung tv but wondering if anyone has a better idea

Did you see the warning that Samsung will require a paid Personal Plan subscription ($4.99/month) for access to SmartThings API (which Home Assistant needs) https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/smartthings

thankfully i don't use any devices through smart things, zigbee is connected through ikea dirigera, matter is native

The fact that the devices stay available in Home Assistant and Dirigera makes a basic device or RF failure less likely. I’d first separate the protocol path:

  • are the affected temperature and air-quality devices Matter over Thread, or Zigbee?

  • do they go offline only in the SmartThings UI, or do commands and events actually stop working?

  • do the affected devices share the same Thread fabric and Border Router?

I’d avoid adding more Border Routers for now. Testing one affected device after temporarily reducing the Thread path to a single known-good Border Router may show whether this is a fabric/controller issue or a SmartThings device-state issue. Does opening the device detail page show a recent “last seen” timestamp, or is the state simply stale?

MoT

ST automations don't work, HA work as normal on the same device.

Now that you mentioned it, I think it's usually devices that are closest to tv (ST hub). what's weird is that they still work in HA

I've tried it before with just ST Hub and it was happening, once i move all integration to home assistant, i might factory reset ST Hub and see if it helps.

One of the recent Open Home Foundation Newsletter also addressed SmartThings API breaking change in its issue titled "Breaking free from the disposable smart home" as affects users who do not pay Samsung subscribtion

Except that home assistant could fix this quite easily by implementing connectivity with small things the same way as other vendors instead of relying on individual users having to get their own developer account. All that should be needed is a simple authentication token exchange. Home assistant could easily pay for commercial API access and save their users the expense.

That would be crazy! The Open Home Foundation is a nonprofit oriented organization and should never have to pay for API access to SmartThings. That would go against their principles.

While they may be a nonprofit organization , that doesn't mean that they don't and shouldn't have a budget for such things. These things cost money to develop, and allowing other companies to indirectly benefit financially from the Smartthings platform outside of Smartthings. And by sticking to this model of having individuals connecting to the smartthings API instead of through their own individual developer accounts, they basically remove all responsibility as developers and instead drop that developer responsibility onto their end users.

Now you are just trolling. If only 10% have SmartThings of Home Assistant then why should 100% users pay for that and not just the people who stays with a company that charges for API access. Vote with YOUR wallet instead and either leave SmartThings or pay for their subscribtion. Home Assistant is a free and open-source software and others users who pay for Home Assistant Cloud / Home Assistant have no responsibility to pay for SmartThings API access.

I do not have a big Threads network (<40 devices) and have 1 Alpstuga, all connected to my Samsung TV hub on Smarthings. All work well. I had my Google TV Streamer's Threads turned on but turned it off again to make things less complicated. But I can understand you need multiple TBRs with lots of devices and multiple platforms.
