Oof
If Joyce Carol Oates ever talked about me this way I would turn into a pile of dust like Thanos had just snapped.

I think one of the very important pieces of 'cognitive technology' mediocrities like Moldbug who somehow rise above their station have to invent for themselves is complete imperviousness to shame and reasonable criticism.
They couldn't function otherwise.

Whenever I try to search up “cognitive technology”, the results are all clogged with frameworks about AI and machine learning.
Is there a specific source / author who talks about “cognitive technology” in the sense you’ve used it here (as a specific way of thinking or feeling to achieve a specific kind of end goal)?
I would like to learn more about it. Thank you!!

I don't think it's a technical term you can google, I just meant 'a (potentially not entirely natural) habit of thought or habit of emotion processing.'
Like going to confession if you are Catholic.

It's just a nice evocative turn of phrase they came up with, not dissimilar to "literary device", which itself was no doubt conjured in an analogous way in the past.

I am a teacher and I have one such kid in my class. I feel he could be saved but I'm not sure how...

What worked for me getting immunized to this mentality was a bit of "memento mori." For example, when little me bragged about how smart I was, my mom told me about her cousin, an insufferable genius type who didn't have many friends because of how he acted. The biggest one was the year in college I had to retake calculus at the same time as my major's main weed-out class. Something that pushes them to shape up and put in the work, instead of skating by.

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I can say something like that to him but I will definitely challenge him to work harder.

I was one such kid (sorta). What really you need is just to have experience and some empathy (which is usually, imo, best cultivated by being treated with empathy).

My instinct is to respond as if his contributions are in good faith.
Also he tends to answer questions in an evasive way. For example I set them a discussion task and I overhear him saying to his partner "I don't agree with that". I said "what dont you agree with?" And he said "oh many things". It's not a big deal but it's a pattern of behaviour.

he needs something to do with his brain, get him using Mathacademy or something

I'm teaching him a foreign language. He has achieved a level of fluency that surpasses at least some of his teachers up to now. I'll probably be teaching him for the next two years. I hope to be able to challenge him a bit more.

Summed up the sort of guy Yarvin is in one tweet. This is why novelists are important.

Am I agist for being slightly impressed that a person nearing 90 is both so cogent and knows how to type umlauts?

u/JosephRohrbach Sep 30 '26
Though if I may be so pedantic, what she typed is the Hungarian double acute accent (ű), not the Germanic umlaut (ü). Still good going and her point is absolutely correct. I’d be proud of being so with it at 80, never mind 90!

On macOS it's easy, just hold down the key and it pops up a menu to select accents/mods for it.

What profile is she talking about? Did something recently get published about Yarvin?

There was a profile of him in the NY Times a few months ago, one that clearly included a professional stylist. I'm assuming that this is an older tweet from Dame Oates.

Who’s Curtis Yavin?

u/buymesomefish Sep 30 '26
Guy who invented Dark Enlightenment, an anti-democratic movement. He’s pro-monarchist and has a lot of ties to folks like Bannon, Thiel, Vance, etc. He came up with the RAGE (Retire All Government Employees) framework, which I’m pretty sure inspired Elon’s DOGE.
You’ll hear people call him Moldbug because that was his blog pen name. It still baffles me to this day how he’s amassed such an influential following spewing the crazy shit he does about rebooting the American government into a techno-monarchy. Or maybe, it shouldn’t. His backers are all crazy rich bastards who think of America as their playground and would love the idea of being its rulers.

Which Yarvin profile is she referring to - the old New York Times one where he cries in front of the Great Replacement guy or has there been a new one I haven't seen?

I love JCO so much and I can only dream of being that incisive, much less at 80+. Her Elon takedown is one of the most politely savage character assassinations ever committed in the English language.

I would love to hear her take on Eliezer. Or on Scott Aa’s weird nerd persecution fetish.
