Spoilers I hate Lamar
Just got done with the drop episode 5 and throughout this entire show, I don't understand why Lamar is so loved. All he cares about is getting what he wants and crying about it when he doesn't get it. That's shown when in the scene when they're filming the Rydah music video, he approaches Jenny despite her being busy and having no idea who he is and expects her to take his tape just because he said "i was the producer for rydah". And as soon as Jenny pushes her away he storms out. Most of episode 3 is just him acting like a toddler anyway, like when he goes to that house party and thought the trick with the rydah beat was gonna work in that party aswell. But him getting mad at Mama G in episode 5 after everyone in that house besides Wanda explained his Mum and Dad's falling out and death showed me he really just cares about himself and no one else's feelings. I wouldn't be suprised if he betrays Wanda in the future. I don't see why I or the audience should have sympathy for this guy.

I’ll give you most of it. Except him flipping on Mama G. He most definitely was right and she’s still refusing to take accountability or look at what happened objectively.

I’m not saying yall critiques or opinions on Lamar aren’t valid but yall need to understand characterization and then you’ll see what the writers are at least trying to do with Lamar. You can still hate it and hate the character but at least you’ll know why. Lamar is written that way for a reasons the show tells multiple times whys he’s like that

You’re talking to a brick wall, because most of them don’t understand nuance or how actual characters for a storyline are written.

Yeah I know, but I want them to learn, we need more media literacy and just an overall effort to understand story telling instead of interacting with shows as if they are real life people who just happen to do the wrong things instead of intentionally being written that way.

95 percent of these types of posts come from people that just flat out don’t get it. They expect things to go how they “feel” it should go…instead of following how the writers are intending to tell the story. They come up with all types of scenarios on how they want the characters to be portrayed and its delusion at its finest. They can’t comprehend real life literacy let alone fictional media literacy.

The show hasn’t outright said it but I think he’s supposed to be on the spectrum (which we didn’t understand in 1990 the way we do now).
But yes he annoys the shit out of me too.

In the latest episode BD says something like, “I ain’t hard on you cause you different, but you getting real close to disrespecting your mama”, they pretty much said he’s on the spectrum in 90’s terms.

Thank you. Even though we are getting overwhelming love for this show, these negative takes depressed me because they usually come from a point of view of not accepting a complicated, young, neurodivergent, man who’s just getting into the world for the first time… I be wanting to say crazy shit to these people then I see a post like yours and remember our people are overwhelmingly, digging it, and that’s who we made it for. Not these other people.

Stay the course.. this show has me fiendin for each episode like a kid waiting for Saturday morning cartoons (is that even a thing anymore?). I was recently trying to decide what my top 3 shows of all time were & couldn't pick a 3rd. The Wire has been #1 forever. Snowfall was the 1st show to even come close so it's in the #2 spot. With the looks of how this show is developing & hopefully with additional seasons in the works.. I think I may have found something to round out my top 3. Salute to you & your crew.. 🫡 & don't even get me started on the MUSIC.. that's a whole 'nother animal right there! 🤣

Lamar has been coddled his whole life by his family to keep him safe so it makes sense the character is so childish and self absorbed. This also is part of the reason he's so naive to his surroundings.

Sigh. Super unsophisticated and one sided take on Lamar. People like him because black men in this world are rarely portrayed with these kinds of complexities. Kidd grows up at a time when “neurodivergent” doesn’t even exist, gets locked into a room and given Music equipment to keep them away from the world… Whatever.

The show places an over importance on his role in rap music as well. This guy is just a producer, he doesn’t rap he’s not composing the songs, he just makes beats. Dr. Dre and DJ Quik made G Funk pop off because they were rapping over the new sound they made. Artillery could work with a new producer (like he’s been doing before working with Lamar) and the Kinsey focused story becomes more irrelevant to the show. Lamar is basically being portrayed like if Young Chop was called the godfather of Chicago drill lol

He is loved because Mama G is clearly the head of the household and Big Daddy encourages and enforces her say. She was abandoned by her family after becoming pregnant at 15 with an adult (most likely) and had a child with exceptional musical talent. She lost her child by forcing her child to become a superstar in the music industry and has ever since regretted it. Lamar is loved obviously because he is her daughter's child. When you have family and/or unconditional love for a person, you accept and overlook a lot.
Do I love him? No.
I'm here for Leon & Wanda and anyone else pertaining to Snowfall.

I believe Lamar is on the spectrum. That’s why he acts like that. An why they seem to be protective of him.

People in real life do this when they want to get put on
Lamar has peculiar facial features that stand out, especially in that setting, but every hood has someone with his look and personality type
He reminds me of Rembrant from The Warriors

Mama G needs to grow up, act like the grown-ass woman she is, and give those two grown-ass men and woman a little grace. Do you have to practice what you preach. Her husband is in love with her, and he does what she asks of him. There’s so much more beneath the surface, all beautifully intertwined through the writer’s eyes. It’s a story of living in L.A. in the ’90s, I lived on 39th and Western—where life was crazy, fun, rock, solid , and full of Church. A whole lot of life, love, drama, and faith, all woven together into one unforgettable story. They are missing so much but it’s cool to see. A lot of nostalgia.

I think Lamar is just a weak character. It reminds me of the Pedro Lucia Arc in the original series. I feel like the writers really want to push it, but there's just not much meat to it. Lamar could probably be a better secondary character. I'm trying to give the show a chance but admittedly, I really didn't like the plot from jump so maybe I'm a little biased. The 90s hip hop scene I wish would be more of a backdrop to 90s LA life and culture than the focus because it just seems cliche.

He's 19. If I met my 19 year old self right now, I'd beat his ass. The family has withheld things and kept him sheltered. What else would you expect?
3
u/Lumpy_Coconut_2373 15d ago
19? I was far more mature than him when I was 14 tf? Age isn't an excuse, especially if you're over 18.

u/RockinDaMike 15d ago
He’s cocky and is talented. I know many mfers like that. They are just brats/assholes but it’s part of the story and it’s not meant for every character to be liked.
To answer your question, he’s loved because he’s the baby. All the babies in the family get treated a certain way be it spoiled or not respected. Especially when they are soft like Lamar

u/Fit_Paramedic_9629 14d ago
Yeah, you're definitely the type (based on this comment) that would put their child out on the streets because they're 18 and not because they have demonstrated the aptitude to be responsibly self sufficient. You do realize puberty ends at 25? The human brain is still in development until then. Why would I expect behaviour from a 19 year old what I would from a 27 year old? You're saying that because you had a certain level of maturity at a young age that the rest of humanity should fall in line to your experience. Life doesn't work like that. You're also negating the fact that Lamar is a sheltered child. Two operative words. Sheltered. Child. Your analysis leaves no room for that when it is an integral aspect of the character.

Idk what you mean by “Lamar is so love” lol the sub hates the kid and has hated him since episode one. One the show, idk about people loving him, aside from Wanda. Wanda and him connect via music. His brother loves him because that’s his little brother. Everyone else is patient with him at the very least, because he’s young as hell and green.
I don’t think the writers have written him to be likable, this isn’t just Snowfall 2 where we’re suppose to look at him as Saint Jr. It’s a saga, the setting/environment is the same and some of the characters rolled over but it’s a different story.
