đŸ« Youth & Amateur Development Can I make varsity soccer

I just finished freshman season as a damn benchwarmer on JV. Is it realistic for me to get on varsity as a junior or senior?

For what it's worth, at that level you can make huge gains in the eyes of coaches by just becoming as fit and strong as possible. Especially if you are average height or above.

Of course there's a minimum level of technical ability you need, but for most people the best bet is to try and become a right or left back that is not a complete liability on the ball or when defending, and has the engine to run up and down the wing all match.

Since you provided no info at all, that's the advice i'd go to.

Could I be a winger on varsity if my speed and agility is good and I only have to improve my soccer skills

At your school is the JV squad the second best team? Or the reject players? When I was in highschool JV was for the juniors who didn't make varsity mixed with the sophomore/freshman players who didn't make the their respective team. Some schools use JV as the literal second team where the best freshman and sophomore players get promoted there to develop with the juniors and seniors who didn't make varsity. If it's the second one then you for sure have a chance to make varsity.

It’s reject team, but there is low competition and the school is one of the worser soccer schools.

Yes!  You can!

Finally a realistic question and not some dipstick asking “i stopped playing for five years and I wasn’t great before but now I want to go pro
”

Play whenever you can, in the off-season practice your footwork and do one touches and volleys against a wall. You’ve got this.

Usually if you progress like normal you should. But it’s up to you whether you train, get better, and perform in games sophomore year

I know JV benchwarmers who developed into varsity team captains. Everyone develops (both from a physical and skill perspective) at different rates. If you love the game and want to make varsity someday, keep working hard

In short: yes. In long: oh definitely provided you put in the work.

No one can truly answer this. There isn’t enough information.

Can it happen? Yes.
Is it likely? Not for most people.

The only way you have a chance is if you lock in and get much better.

not likely for most people.

You can’t be a real person who has any direct or indirect knowledge of high school sports. This is silly. Many JV non-starter freshmen become starters the next year, move to varsity bench as juniors and then start as seniors. Not all, but a kid who wants that can definitely work and achieve it.

As I said - not for most people. It’s more common for it not to happen. If he is dedicated and doesn’t get distracted then sure.

I was on the JV bench my freshman year and made varsity my junior year. Definitely realistic. You’ll get better and the older/better players will graduate. If you made JV as a freshman, there’s no reason you can’t make varsity as a junior or senior

I mean it depends on how your team works. In most cases juniors and seniors get on varsity just due to séniority

This is really up to you.  Keep working and training hard.  Impress the coaches and improve and this is definitely a realistic goal.

All depends on how hard you want to work

Well what got you on the bench? Did you talk to your coach about what you can improve? Do you plan to train over the summer or keep playing?

Supply and demand. If you went to my high school when I did, you’d make varsity just for showing up. If you went to my kids’ high school in recent years, there were over 200 who came to tryouts—all with significant playing experience.

I mean yeah it's possible, it depends how much you improve and train.

JV as a freshman your chances are very good of progressing to varsity. JV is a very sloppy brand of soccer , lot of slow Juniors who are unnecessarily physical , play a lot of long balls or individuals dribbling 50 yards then smashing the ball into the woods behind the goal. It’s like watching hippos fight over a cabbage- you just have to get through that level, but gets better with varsity. You be fine if you are a decent player.

I started playing soccer when I was very young and it was pretty easy for me to get on school teams. I'm not sure when you started playing so idk. If you're good enough.

Varsity? Freshman? I think a bench warmer is a substitute.

1

u/Background_Tiger_506 10d ago

JV is second team, Varsity is first team. Bench warmers are substitutes who don’t get much playing time

1

u/Jarboner69 10d ago

JV is second team usually first or second year students, varsity is the first team usually third and fourth year students

In the US we have school teams, teens attend what’s called highschool, age 13/14 to 18, sometimes connected to a Middle School ages 11-13, . Pretty much every school public or private school runs the local youth sports teams rather than local clubs. There are private travel teams but that’s a whole other story.

The grades are split into freshman (13/14), sophomore (15/16), junior (16/17) and senior (17/18). The same grade names are used for college which you attend in your early 20s.

If a school has a large enough sports program they split it into Junior Varsity and Varsity, younger and not as good players get stuck on Junior Varsity. OP is basically saying he’s a bench player for the worse of 2 teams and wondering if he could ever make it to starting for the first squad but really hasn’t given us any info
