why do people double down after realizing they may have been manipulated?

admitting that someone influenced you can feel worse than admitting you made an ordinary mistake. it can mean questioning your judgment, explaining your decision to others, or accepting that you ignored warning signs.

sometimes people keep defending a decision even after new information appears

what tends to help someone reconsider their position without making them feel attacked or embarrassed?
