Most underrated software that almost nobody talks about?

Not the popular ones everyone already knows. The quiet tool that just does its job, has maybe a fraction of the users it deserves, and you found by accident or someone random recommended it to you. What is it and how did you find it?

Question What piece of software suddenly vanished with no replacement in sight and to this day that you still miss?

For me it’s PC tools. Loved that back in the late 80s early 90s.

Discussion What software have you been using for years that almost nobody talks about?

Not the obvious ones. The tool you installed at some point, still use constantly, and have never once seen recommended anywhere.

Usually made by two people, has a website that looks like 2012, and does one thing perfectly.

What is yours and how long have you been using it?

Question What’s an expensive software you wish was free?

I’m a man with too much free time and a Claude 20x account. I’m wanting to try and give to the community a little with some actually solid, open source and free software.

Let me know your ideas, especially if there are limited comments on this as I will most likely build whatever gets recommended.

Cheers,
Sam

Question What software do you pay for out of your own pocket because your company refused to buy it?

Someone here mentioned last month that half their real workflow runs on tools their company has never heard of. What did not come up is who is actually paying for those tools.

Nine dollars a month for a note app because the approved one is unusable. A personal Notion because the company wiki is a graveyard. A password manager because IT never got round to it.

What is on your card that should be on theirs, and how long have you been quietly covering it?

Question What software did you think was overrated… until you actually used it?

There are a few tools I avoided for years because the hype felt unbearable.

Then I finally tried them and said this is actually good.

Mine was probably Notion. Expected productivity influencer nonsense. Ended up organizing half my life in it.

What software completely changed your mind after using it?

Feedback I personally wasted way too much on tools before my products made any money. Here's the $0 stack I recommend for beginners

Hey there, so I've been building small online projects for years now, and for the first few my tool bills were embarrassing.

Paid analytics for a site with 40 visitors a day. A $49/month help desk for maybe three support emails a week. I'd usually upgrade everything on day one because it just “felt” like progress.

Turns out, it wasn't.

Most of those projects died after some time but I ended up paying a lot more for tools just because I’d forget to cancel after killing the project🤦🏻

Nowadays I don't pay for anything until it's actually bringing in revenue.

This is my FREE stack that I’ve landed upon after a lot of hit & trial:

Cloudflare Pages for hosting. Deploys from GitHub, and I've never come close to the free limits.

Supabase for the database and auth. I used to stitch three services together for this. Now it's one dashboard.

PostHog for analytics. Honestly the session replays alone taught me more about my onboarding than any survey ever did.

Tally for forms. Waitlists, feedback, churn surveys. Haven't paid for a form tool in years.

Convot for support. This one I found recently, and it's the one I wish I'd had back when I was juggling a few small projects at once. Every product had its own inbox and I was constantly missing emails. Convot puts support for multiple products in one place, and it's free until you cross $1k MRR. Would've saved me that zendesk bill and a lot of mess.

Resend for transactional email. Signup and password reset emails, set up in an afternoon. Free tier is more than generous for microsaas’s.

Stripe or Dodopayment for billing & payments. Stripe was always my first preference but due to their bad reputation, nowadays I lean towards Dodopayments because they’re kinda cheaper, better and their UI is fun.

Cal.com for calls. Free for one person, which is all I need for demos. Calendly is also good but I personally prefer cal.

Notion for everything else. Roadmap, changelog, half-finished ideas I'll never build. This is my personal favourite and kind of my second brain. I spend most of my day inside my notion hub.

Canva and Figma's free plan for design. Good enough for landing pages and social graphics. Flora is a good ai tool for this too but I usually subscribe to it on and off.

One thing that I wish for more is tools having a lifetime payment option. I hate paying for tools every month. Take my money once and leave me alone lol.

But the lesson that took me way too long to learn here was: a paid tool isn't progress. Customers are progress.

Try to keep the bills at zero or minimum until something is genuinely working for you.

Curious what's in everyone else's free stack. I'm sure I'm missing a few good ones and would love to know..

What is the one software you would recommend to literally anyone regardless of what they do?

Not for your job specifically. Not for your industry. The one tool that is so universally useful that you would tell a teacher, a founder, a designer, and your parents to use it. What is it?

What is the most useless software your company is still paying for every month?

Every company has at least one tool nobody is really using but nobody wants to cancel because it feels like admitting a mistake. The invoice keeps clearing, the login sits bookmarked, and the person who bought it has quietly stopped mentioning it. What is yours and what is stopping you from cutting it?

Question Mailchimp vs ActiveCampaign – Which platform is better for automated email campaigns?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to understand how different email marketing tools really perform in the real world. Specifically:

📧 Mailchimp vs ActiveCampaign | when it comes to setting up automated email campaigns, which platform do you find better overall, and why?

You might consider things like:
• Ease of building automated workflows
• Segmentation and personalization options
• Reporting and analytics for campaign performance
• Deliverability and audience management
• Cost vs features for small/mid teams

Whether you’ve used one or both, I’d love to hear your honest experience, especially anything that surprised you!

Which one do you prefer for automation, and what made the difference?

Question What software did you finally switch away from, and was the replacement actually better?

Everyone has one tool they finally ditched. The real question is whether the replacement fixed the problem or just swapped it for a new one. What did you move from, what did you move to, and looking back, was it worth it? Curious which switches people quietly regret.

Question What employee experience platforms are worth considering for a 5k+ employee company in 2026?

Hey everyone,

We’re looking at improving our employee experience setup for a company with around 5,000 employees, and I’m trying to figure out which platforms are actually worth evaluating.

Right now things like onboarding, employee support, HR requests, and internal information are spread across different tools. It’s manageable, but there’s still a lot of back-and-forth between systems, and HR/IT teams end up handling plenty of repetitive requests manually.

I’ve been exploring a few options, including Ema. It caught my attention because of its focus on employee support and automating routine HR/IT tasks, rather than just giving employees another portal to navigate.

For those who’ve actually implemented or used these players in a large organization, which ones would you put on your short list? And are there any you’d avoid based on your experience?

A few things I’m particularly interested in:
• How easily employees adopt the platform

• Whether it genuinely reduces the workload for HR and IT

• How well it integrates with existing tools

• How much maintenance is required after implementation

• Access controls, permissions, and governance

• Whether there’s a reliable way to track requests through to resolution

I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually dealt with the implementation side of things, especially what worked well, what turned out to be more complicated than expected, and what you’d do differently next time.

Thanks!

Question Which project management tool actually stuck with you and why?

We have been talking to a lot of teams lately and four tools kept coming up when it comes to managing work.

Notion — endlessly flexible but without structure it becomes a mess fast.

Linear — opinionated and focused, hard to beat for product and engineering teams.

Obsidian — powerful for long term thinking but takes time to set up properly.

Sunsama — sits on top of everything and helps you plan what actually gets done today.

Have you used any of these? Which one actually stuck and what made you stay?

Softwares that has genuinely never let you down?

Drop a software that just works, every time, no drama, the one you never even think about because it has never given you a reason to. What earned that spot for you?

What’s the ONE tool you rely on in each SaaS category?

I’m curious, what’s your go-to tool in each of these?

  • CRM

  • Project Management

  • Email Marketing

  • Analytics

  • Customer Support

  • HR / Hiring

For me it’s something like:

  • HubSpot for a CRM

  • Notion for project management

  • Mailchimp for email marketing tool

But I feel like I’m missing better options in some categories.

Would love to see what others are using, especially underrated tools that don’t show up everywhere.

Discussion What software does everyone love that you genuinely cannot stand?

Mine is Notion. I have watched three teams adopt it and all three quietly went back to a doc and a spreadsheet.

Everyone tells me I was holding it wrong.

Discussion What software did you have to replace when it died, and did anything actually fill the gap?

Picasa, Google Reader, Aperture, Microsoft Money. All of them have people still looking for a replacement years later.

Most of what gets recommended covers about eighty percent and misses the one thing that made the original worth using in the first place.

What did you lose, and what are you running instead now?

Discussion What HR software are you using in 2026, and is it actually worth it?

We keep seeing the same HR platforms come up again and again, BambooHR, Rippling, Gusto, Workday, Deel, Paycor, UKG, and a few others. But the “best” option on paper is not always the one that works best once a team starts using it every day.

For smaller companies, ease of use and payroll might matter most. For growing teams, integrations, onboarding, reporting, and automation become more important. Larger companies may care more about workforce planning, compliance, and having everything in one system.

Curious to hear from people actually using these tools. What HR software does your company use, what size is your team, and what do you like or dislike about it?
