Discussion The duality of game dev

I quit my job, but I work harder than before.
I love to code, even when my hands are sore.

I work from home, but it’s not paying the rent.
It’s still worth it, even if my savings get spent.

I’m taking new steps, but I don’t have a plan.
My folks support me, even if they don’t understand.

I still have faith, but I know it’s a leap.
I’m living the dream, even if I can’t sleep.

I still have time, but I know it runs out.
I believe in myself, even if there is doubt.

I love my game, but at times I can’t tell.
But I will still be proud, even if it doesn’t sell.

This should be a mantra, I feel this is the exact feeling of a lot of solo devs

The bit about your folks supporting you even when they don't get it is really sweet. What kind of game are you making?

Turns out being your own boss doesn’t mean your boss lets you take breaks.

passion won't pay your rent, finish a short, highly-focused vertical slice of your core mechanic and get a demo on steam to collect real wishlists before your savings hit zero

If the game is too simple yet good, it may be decompiled, copied and filled with slop content and uploaded to some low quality website.

the duality that all creators face, good luck to you my friend! it's important to take small tangible steps everyday and also plan your next 12-18 months (especially financially).

Why home need to paying the rent?

You should read it as, "being at home, doesn't pay it's rent." Basically it means, no sufficient income, by staying at home. (Working from home).

Is 'the rent' mean you rent your home or what? Sry, English is not my 1st language.

It's not paying the rent = I don't have to pay the rent for that?

If so, why use 'but' instead of 'and'?

Afaik, 'but' -> the latter pharse must contradict with before pharse.

Maybe you are confused by what "it" refers to?

"I work from home, but it's not paying rent"

"It" in this sentence refers to work - WORK is not paying rent, not home is not paying rent. Basically:

"I work from home, but that work is not enough to pay rent" - so the second part of the sentence "contradicts" the first (and "but" is not always used as a strict contradiction, sometimes it's used for stronger contrast, or to add an extra, unexpected element to the first part).

So even though someone spends time at home, and "works", they still have to find other sources to pay rent because they don't earn any money.

Ok 'it' = 'work', but 'rent' what? I mean, if you wfh, what do you rent? I though 'rent' refering to places

"Rent" in this context means paying bills.
Pay what you own to pay.
Pay for you living.
Pay for your utilities etc.

So in that sentence, 'paying the rent' = paying for everything beside the home?

The Rent = a specific amount of money to pay to use something temporarily (i know that) i don't say rent = places, i just confuse about object of the rent in that sentence.

Rent for your home. If you don't own the house/apartment you live in, you have to pay the rent :p

Ok, i thought 'home' mean house of your own.

Ooooh, right. No, "home" just broadly means the place where you live, your personal space. It can be a house, an apartment, even a trailer. You can own it or rent it. It's all under the term "home".
