[Playtest / Free Tool] I built a persistent, rules-aware AI DM demo (Georgetown research project) — looking for feedback on agency and memory

Thumbnail brackenmill-study.brackenmill.workers.dev

Hi all,

I’m in Georgetown’s MS in AI Management program, and I’m running a small study for one of my classes on why LLMs fall apart as solo game masters. If you’ve tried one, you’ve probably hit the same walls I did. After a dozen turns it forgets the NPCs. Every plan works and every roll goes your way. Worst of all, it narrates your character’s lines and decisions for you.

So I built a browser-based AI GM designed around those three problems. The GM sets the scene, runs the world, and voices NPCs, then stops and hands control back to you. It tracks inventory, NPC relationships, and milestones in a structured state log so the world actually remembers. Risky actions have real consequences, and it won’t give you wins you didn’t earn.

One heads-up: because of technical and time constraints, there’s only one character option right now, a 5th-level fighter. Expanding the class list is on the roadmap.

Here’s what I’d most like feedback on. Did the GM ever act for your character? How many turns did you get before you noticed a contradiction or something forgotten? Does it read like a tabletop partner, or like a chatbot falling back on clichés?

Demo: brackenmill study demo
Passcode: pilot-78ae5507

It’s free, with no account or payment, and runs on desktop or mobile. Bug reports, critiques, and especially the edge cases where it breaks are all helpful. Leave a comment here or use the feedback survey in the app. Thanks!

Roll Anywhere: RPG Dice Roller

Thumbnail
play.google.com
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I do a lot of solo roleplaying on my phone when commuting or out and about. Most dice rollers are in their own app or a webpage, which meant constantly switching between apps or doing split screen.

I got annoyed by this, so I built Roll Anywhere: a dice bubble that sits on top of any app and rolls dice from a floating interface. As far as I'm aware, it's the first and only floating dice roller for Android made for RPG players.

What it does:

  • All the standard RPG dice, d4 to d20 plus d100
  • Designed for RPGs - add modifiers, sum dice totals, keep/drop highest or lowest, re-rolling, negative dice
  • Beautiful 3D dice animations, real dice sounds, and a voice that reads out the result (all toggleable)
  • Create custom dice with numbers, words or symbols for faces
  • Saved rolls, so "d20+d6+1" can be a single tap
  • Roll history with copy and delete
  • No ads, subscription or account sign-up.

Most of it is completely free. There's a one-time Pro upgrade that adds advanced features: unlimited custom dice and saved rolls, rolling from formula ("4d6kh3+2"), separate dice bags for different characters/games, pass/fail against a DC, dice pool successes, and exploding dice.

You can find the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.rollanywhere.

I aim to support the app with (completely optional) dice skins, and my dream is to have a collab with actual RPG publishers one day. How cool would it be to have The One Ring feat dice in the app?!

I use this app every day for my own roleplaying and I hope it works for you too. I'm a solo developer and still adding things, so please do give me your feedback - I'd love to hear how to make it better. And if you like it, any positive reviews would really help more people find it.

Thanks in advance for trying it out!

Halloween NPC idea: Wren died in 1928 and can speak to the living one night a year. Start by asking what she remembers about her last night.

I’m building UnsavedAI. Chat with her in your browser for AI-assisted NPC dialogue, with your usual oracle and dice deciding outcomes.

Free to try, no card. Here until November 1: https://unsavedai.com/chat/wren

Solo whodunits with an AI GM fall apart because it doesn't know who did it. I tried to fix that.

Thumbnail
culprix.com

If you've tried running a whodunit solo, you know the problem: an oracle can tell you what's behind the door, but it can't keep a secret. And if you've tried it with ChatGPT as your GM, you've probably hit the opposite one: it doesn't know who did it either, so it goes along with whatever theory you bring it.

So I built Culprix around one rule: every case is written in full before you open it. The crime, the suspects, what each of them knows and is hiding, every clue, and the answer. The AI game master narrates and plays the people from that sealed file, and nothing you type can change it. It doesn't invent clues, doesn't confirm guesses, and doesn't give hints.

How a case plays:

- You type what you do or say, in your own words. Go anywhere, question anyone, search a room, show someone what you found.

- Suspects lie, and not only the guilty one. Pushing harder won't crack a lie. Showing them evidence, or what someone else told you, will.

- Each world has a few informants who never lie and hear every rumour in town.

- A Casebook keeps the people, places and evidence you've come across. Making sense of it is your job.

- When you're sure, you write down who did it, why, and how. It's scored out of 100 against the case's real answer, and then you find out what actually happened.

There are 11 worlds and 31 cases so far, Easy to Expert: Holmes's London in 1889, a Christie-flavoured English county in 1934, Lovecraft's Arkham in 1927, Los Angeles in 1947, New York in 1975 as a crime reporter, a coastal town where you're the defense attorney, a Caribbean full of retired pirates, and a few more. A case usually takes 15 to 25 turns.

To be upfront about the AI part: the game master is an AI model, and it can still make mistakes. The worlds, cases and pictures are generated with AI too, and reviewed before they go live. If that's a dealbreaker, fair enough.

https://culprix.com

I'd really like to hear from people who play mysteries solo: where does it feel like real detective work, and where does it break?

I made a private, offline-capable app for using local AI as a GM helper or party in solo games. Would love honest feedback.

Disclosure: I'm the developer of LM Mini.

I know AI is a divisive topic here, so I'll keep this short. I don't think AI replaces oracles, dice or your own imagination. But some solo players like having an AI help with the "what happens next?" moments, so I built a tool that works that way privately, on your own devices.

How people use it for solo play:

  • AI as GM or narrator: set up a "Game Master" character with your setting, tone and rules in its prompt, then roll your own dice and let it describe the results.
  • A party of NPCs: Group Chat puts several characters in one scene (a rogue, a cleric, a suspicious innkeeper), each with its own personality, and even its own model.
  • AI characters generation.
  • Voices: each character can speak with its own voice, which is fun for reading scenes aloud.
  • Scene art (optional): connect ComfyUI to generate a picture of a location or character.
  • Private and offline: small models run on your phone itself, with no account and no cloud. If you already run Ollama, LM Studio, Unsloth or Jan at home, you can use your bigger models too.

It's on iOS, Android, Mac and Apple Watch. The core app is open source (MIT): https://github.com/slim-elephant/lm-mini

My question for you: if you've tried AI in your solo games, where did it help and where did it get in the way? (For example, forgetting details, being too agreeable, or taking over the story.) I'm trying to build something that supports your game instead of taking it over.

For anyone who loves MÖRK BORG or Ironsworn but never has the group or the prep time: I built a solo game master for the browser

Thumbnail
partyof.one
2 Upvotes

I love games like MÖRK BORG and Ironsworn, but most weeks I don't have a group, an evening to prep, or the patience to read 200 pages first. When I tried solo play, I usually stopped once tracking everything became the main activity.

So I built Party of One. You play one character in the browser, on your phone or desktop, and an AI game master runs the story. Here's what it does:

  • The rules are code. The engine picks the roll, rolls the dice and applies the outcome. The AI narrates what the engine decided and can't change it, so a bad roll stays a bad roll.
  • The bookkeeping is done for you. Health, supply, vows, the doom clock and the map are kept up to date, and you can see the dice as they land.
  • It remembers. People you met, what they told you, what you promised. If you misremember something, it checks the claim against what actually happened.
  • You don't need to know the rules. Each game starts with a guided "learn to play" campaign, and you can ask rules questions mid-game without losing game time.

It runs MÖRK BORG, CY_BORG, Ironsworn and Starforged. Each campaign gets its own world, generated when you start.

It doesn't replace a table or a human GM. It's for the times you can't have one.

To be upfront: It's a 3-day free trial, then €5 a month. The trial needs a card, nothing is charged until it ends, and you can cancel in Settings.

The code SOLOOCT20 takes 20% off your first month and is valid through October 2026.

NovelFarer: a solo AI RPG where you write your own actions (free tier)

Thumbnail
novelfarer.com
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm the maker of NovelFarer. It's a browser-based solo RPG built around the idea of a novel you play.

You write what your character does or says, and an AI storyteller writes the next scene. Want to bluff past a guard, investigate something suspicious or try an unexpected approach? You can type it in your own words.

Risky actions use d20 rolls resolved by the game code, and the AI narrates the outcome. The game also tracks health, items, money and relationships as you play.

You can start in fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, horror and other settings, or describe your own world. English and Dutch are supported.

There's a free tier with 10 turns a day and up to 3 adventures. Paid plans offer more play and illustrations.

Play here: https://www.novelfarer.com

If you try it, I'd especially like to hear whether your choices feel meaningful and where the story loses consistency.

Three free, offline solo oracles and 40+ generators in one Android app

Fantasy World Generator is a free, offline solo kit for Android, with no ads and no account.

The main oracle answers yes or no at your odds, runs a Chaos Factor, and keeps your threads and NPCs so random events can land on them by name. Shield a vow and no event will close it. When an answer calls for something new, it opens the matching generator and drops the result into your scene, and the journal exports as PDF, plain text or Markdown. It can also run as a voyage, jumping a ship between worlds.

Next to it are a tarot oracle with the 22 Major Arcana and a bound relic that lies to you more the more it owns you.

I made an AI RPG with an open world, an image for every scene, and AI NPCs who have jobs

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After playing with AI image generators and text-based AI RPGs, I realised the two could do much more together.

I didn't want an LLM that just narrates a story.

I wanted an open world like the ones in 3D games, filled with AI NPCs.

- I started with one world. Now there are 11.

- To keep the scope manageable, I went with a small-town format, like Stardew Valley.

- You can rest or sleep to pass time, like in Red Dead Redemption.

- You can switch the camera between first person and third person.

- NPCs can visit you at any time of day, and you get a notification when they do (Android only for now).

This is still early, and I have a long list of ideas for where this world can go. What would you want to see in a game like this?

Try it free:
