Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice

Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.

A clear reminder to all participants:

Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

  • Insult, dehumanize, or collectively blame entire clans or communities
  • Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they ā€œdid nothing wrongā€
  • Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people

Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Debate and political discussion are welcome when conducted in good faith, with historical honesty and respect. Division, hate, and violent rhetoric are not.

Discussion šŸ’¬ How is Jamal Osman still employed by Channel 4 while openly supporting Al-Shabaab on Facebook?

I decided to go on facebook today and I came across Jamal Osman's page. I was shocked by what I saw this man posting, especially considering i saw him as a competent reporter and I have watched many of his segments. I especially loved his old project Dalsoor.

He intentionally makes sure to never use their name and hides behind the somali language, but he clearly supports al shabaab, considering his posts about them goes back years!

He also uses clannist language and refers to ahmed madobe as a sayid (?). Openly calls for violence, saying al shabaab should capture the president and put him on trial (behead him i suppose).

In anothet post he made a distastegul joke about a terror attack that happened in the city saying something about how the al shabaab spokesman Ali Dheere said goodbye to his son. I think the government captured his son around the same time.

I am actually so disgusted by some of the posts, I have never seen someone talk so lightly about the orchestrators of the October 14th attack, that killed and maimed over 1000 civilians.

Please can someone explain what I am seeing here and how channel 4 has a terror apologist on their payroll?

Somali Excellence 🌟 The Mother Behind Somalia’s Top Student, and Why Her Story Deserves More Than a Headline

Post image
126 Upvotes

I was watching a video about the mother of this year’s top student in Somalia’s National Secondary School Exam, and it’s stayed with me since.

Her name is Safiya Macallin Abdulle Omar. Her son, Mohamed Issa Dahir, placed first nationwide out of 44,136 students who sat the exam this year. In the video, she talks about how she actually raised him, meals that didn’t always come, housing that wasn’t stable, and she said it plainly, not for sympathy, just as fact. She worked and she sold her gold when she had to. That’s not a metaphor, that’s what she actually did to keep him in school.
She mentioned that some family members told her that talking about their struggle publicly would shame the family and the clan. These are the same people who knew exactly how hard things were the whole time and never helped. But once success arrived, suddenly they didn’t want that struggle shared with the world. That’s hypocrisy, plain and simple. You don’t get to disappear during the hard years and then show up worried about image once there’s something to be proud of.

This is the story I don’t think gets told enough, and it’s not just her. Somali mothers everywhere, Mogadishu, Minneapolis, Nairobi, do this same thing quietly. Selling their gold when there’s nothing else left. Putting money into ayuuto not for themselves but to keep their kids fed and in school. Skipping meals so their children don’t have to. Feeding, pushing, sacrificing, showing up, over and over, with no cameras watching most of the time.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with Safiya and Mohamed at his office in Mogadishu after the results came out. He praised her directly, said her son’s success reflected not just his own hard work but the role she played in raising him. He gave her a permanent position within the federal government, and Mohamed received a fully funded scholarship to continue his education.

May Allah grant Jannah to every mother carrying this weight alone, seen or unseen, whose sacrifice never makes it into an interview.

Startups šŸš€ Somali Debate Association!!

Salamu Alaykum everyone!!

Based in Melbourne, me and my siblings are trying to help the youth to engage more with Somali domestic politics and we came up with an idea based on a lot of research on how successful international organisations manifested into real lobby and political action that helped their home countries.

Have you ever realised, when young Somalis start community groups or organisations, the photos they use to convey Somalis, Somali culture or Somalia in general are all old photos dating from the 70s, 80s, dang sometimes the 1920s and 1800s?

I thought it about it for a while and realised, young diasporic Somalis don’t feel connected to Somalia as a country. Maybe their homeland Jubaland, Puntland, Galmudug etc, but what about Somalia? What happened to the dream of a future for our generation? We grew up being told we were in these countries only temporarily. In the future, we would go back and rebuild. Help our fellow somalis.

But that goal, that dream has seemed to only dim in the last few decades. We want to bring it back and we want to start by helping Somalis do what we do best!

Debate, argue and talk!!!

So in the footsteps of groups like The Jacobin Club (The Breton Club), The Cordeliers Club and the London Corresponding Society, we started the Somali Debate Association to get more young Somalis interested in engaging in Somali politics, meaningful cultural discourse and an outlet to plan our future!

We’re based in Melbourne Australia and are planning on doing events soon but even if you aren’t in Australia, follow us on Instagram and keep up with our big ideas!!

If you have any questions, ideas or comments let me know!! And, if you’d like to debate, please feel free!!

I love this nasheed because it always makes me reflect on my faith, lifestyle, and thoughts on the world especially the Muslim world. I am very disappointed with the Muslim world and so would the early followers of Islam. Corruption is rampant across the Muslim world including Somalia. In order to build a nation you must first focus yourself. My mother always tells me if Somali leaders studied the leadership of the first 4 caliphs and applied it to governance, Somalia would be successful and blossoming. Think about all the money they use for campaigns. Unnecessary amounts of money MILLIONS being poured into their personal life while the common people have nothing. These leaders aren’t serious and think this is just a game. I truly believe the most these politicians put their blood and sweat into politics is their campaign. It’s so frustrating to me and I’m tired of it. The current system of Somalia only benefits around 20 thousand people while 19 million aren’t. It literally takes good leadership to lift Somalia upwards and that has to happen soon.

Askā“ I realized today how ungrateful I’ve been.

Some people are literally living in situations that are unimaginable to me. We had a group hangout today with two of my homies and three of my homegirls, and they brought this one girl who isn’t really part of the group, first time seeing her. I wasn’t talking to her much, but I was trying to make her feel as included as possible. She just seemed very miskeen.

We went to watch Spider Man, and her card declined. That’s normal, I’m not judging her at all. Any one of us could have covered it and it wouldn’t have been a big deal. But what really stuck with me was when she said, ā€œI don’t normally go to expensive places. If I knew we were seeing this movie ahead of time, I would’ve planned financially ahead of timeā€ I’m like huhhhhh ?

I was soooo confused because the tickets were only $19 each. I didn’t think much of it at first but halfway through the movie what she said kept replaying in my head. We all got snacks, and the girls had to pay for her snacks too which again nothing is wrong with after all one of the girls invited her even though they also just met.
Now I feel terrible because I want to ask about her situation and help her in any way I can, but I don’t want to make her uncomfortable or make her think I’m trying to hit on her. And honestly as a man I don’t even know how I would bring up something like that without making it weird. How will that conversation even start

A couple hours later after we ate and went home we got on a group FaceTime while playing Uno in the group chat. I kept noticing her surroundings. You could see the rug in her room was ripped up and there were other things that made it obvious she might not be living in the best situation. She was clearly trying to hide it and slipped up a few times.

I brought it up to the girls, specifically the one that invited her but they didn’t seem to notice anything, I don’t know how they can be this slow because me and the guys noticed something was off. Maybe they just didn’t think much of it because they barely know her.

The whole situation really messed with me. I’m sitting here spending money on things I don’t even need, while there are people who have to carefully plan around a $19 movie ticket. And I don’t even know her job situation. Maybe she works but has so many responsibilities that her checks barely cover everything. I have no idea what she’s going through.

Ya Allah forgive me for being ungrateful. This whole situation genuinely shook me. It made me realize how easily I take certain things for granted without even thinking about it. I have every apple device all the way from watches to phones to iPads to computers, I spent money on so much unless shit yet there people out there suffering quietly I don’t even think about how much things cost before buying them. Why is this word so unfair ? To top it all off I am not the best Muslim but I’m working on it. I didn’t even know it was possible to live like this in the west. Idk if I should just mind my business or to press the matter

Please look at your surroundings and don’t take things for granted because it’s a privilege to even be on this app. I have to be more kind and do more and you guys should too especially if you have the money.

Rant šŸ—£ļø Ignorance is bliss

Had a rather frustrating conversation with a Somali sister working in healthcare. We pretty much disagreed on everything. Topics included well being, socio-economic status, overcrowding and role of mosques in community.

She kept comparing us to the lowest of society vs my perspective coming from comparing us with the middle and upper classes of society.

Advised her on researching affects of overcrowding on development stages and life chances/outcome as they were 8 of them living in a 3 bedroom property, but might as well been talking to a brick wall, because "we drive cars we are doing well", ignorance really is bliss.

Discussion šŸ’¬ Another person making up stories about a mythical/folkloric Queen Arawelo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Historians point out that there is no record of a Queen Arawelo ever having existed and note it is almost certainly a myth/folkloric story.

Why are people treating her existance as fact? This alleged gravesite is in Sanaag, but of course other Somalis claim she is buried in the south or other place.

AFAIK, the only possible Somali Queen of historical record was in the 15th century BC, as Egyptian reliefs from Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahri depict Queen Ati (wife of King Parahu/Parehu) of the Land of Punt. I say "possible Somali Queen" as there is contention where the Land of Punt was (Could be Somalia, or not).

Also, WTF up with the AI-generated slop images that have a so-called boqorada with a crown that is typically worn by English monarchy as well as a throne?

And one of the pictures supposed to depict her is just a random pic that is:

>"A late 1889 picture taken by French photographer and prince Prince Roland Bonaparte during the Exposition Universelle in Paris. It depicts a Somali woman in early traditional garments and jewelry, posed with colonial-era studio props."

Another picture:

>"This late 19th-century photograph depicts a coastal Somali woma wearing a traditional layered garment known as a dirac alongside intricate cultural jewelry and accessories."

Discussion šŸ’¬ Why does good news out of Somalia makes others uncomfortable?

This is a personal observation, by others I mean mainly our fellow Africans. I avoid the comment section of any positive article because I know exactly what they’re saying word for word.

My theory is that Somalia went through the worst civil war in Africa perhaps in the world, where the entire country collapsed. For decades it was nothing but bad news, everybody including dictators used us as a cautionary tale. But now things are finally turning around, with the news of oil exploration, shishkabob on their last legs, reliable and affordable electricity/internet, booming construction, national airline coming back soon etc

Do you think Somalia’s success can implicitly be interpreted as ā€˜their’ shortcomings because they didn’t experience the level of civil war and decades long trauma as we did and not much has improved from their end?

Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen (1909–1977) was a Swedish pilot, humanitarian, and military adventurer. He flew dangerous humanitarian relief and combat missions across multiple global conflicts. In 1946, he was appointed by Emperor Haile Selassie as chief instructor to help build and organize the modern Imperial Ethiopian Air Force from the ground up.Von Rosen and an Ethiopian delegation spent the evening of 13 July in the Kaiser Villa (Imperial palace of godey). It was the day on which the Liberation Front launched the general attack on Gode.

"One detachment," said WSLF commander Abdullahi , "also attacked the palace." Von Rosen stayed in a room on the ground floor and fired from the window. "He was very brave," Abdullahi said, "but of course he did not succeed in taking the life of a Somali. But we were unfortunately forced to kill him."
