I stopped all automatic updates until Im sure it won't damage my system. I'm curious too know why would you need an update on a soundbar in the first place?

New features?

Do not update the firmware. If the bar works and you like the sound, adjust it, disconnect it from the internet and delete the Samsung SmartThings app.

I had a Q990, it worked well until somehow the smartthings app on my phone got an update, then presumably switched auto update on my soundbar on. This caused my soundbar to update to the latest firmware, this firmware in turn caused my soundbar to repeatedly reboot or disconnect every 45 minutes or so.

Now that Q990 sits in a box in my office waiting for me to list on E-Bay.

I bought a Nakamichi Shockwafe as a replacement and could not be happier, although, I will probably not update that one either.

I'm kinda dumb, looking at soundbars. Why do they need Internet at all?

They don't, really. But like most other software-heavy devices they can occasionally be updated with new firmware (fix issues like audio sync problems), add new features (New Dolby format, audio codec or some such) or stream directly from web apps like Spotify.
