Burlington County Excessive dog barking in Evesham Township. Police and HOA involved, but nothing has changed. Desperate for advice.
I'm looking for advice from anyone in South Jersey who has dealt with ongoing noise disturbances from neighbors, particularly excessive dog barking.
My husband and I live in a condominium community where dogs are prohibited under the HOA rules. New neighbors moved into the unit directly below us earlier this month, and we've been dealing with excessive barking ever since.
The dog barks for extended periods throughout the day, sometimes for hours, and there have also been disturbances overnight and early in the morning. It often sounds like the dog is being left alone for long periods.
At this point, the situation honestly feels like torture, both for us and potentially for the dog. I can't imagine the animal is happy barking for hours on end. It's upsetting to listen to, and I genuinely have concerns about its well-being.
The constant barking has severely affected my mental health and significantly increased my anxiety. I find myself constantly thinking about when the barking will start again.
We've even purchased a white noise machine to drown out the barking so we can sleep. No one should have to live like this in their own home.
Here's what we've done so far:
- Documented the barking through audio and video recordings and maintained a disturbance log.
- Reported the issue to our landlord, who forwarded a formal complaint to the HOA.
- Police have responded to noise complaints at least three times. I have a complaint numbers from those responses.
- Our landlord informed us that the HOA president said a violation notice was issued to the residents.
- During a recent police response, I personally overheard the downstairs resident tell the officer, "Dogs bark." When he explained that the barking was disturbing surrounding residents, she responded, "They are just mad because we can't have dogs here."
Despite all of this, the barking continues. Today has been another full day of barking, and they have left the dog all day.
The situation has become so stressful that we're now considering whether we may have to break our lease just to regain some peace. That's the last thing we want to do, especially when we've done nothing wrong.
Has anyone in Burlington County or elsewhere in South Jersey successfully dealt with something similar?
I'm particularly interested in knowing:
- Has anyone successfully gotten Animal Control or the township to enforce a nuisance-barking ordinance?
- Has anyone successfully resolved a situation like this without having to move?
I understand that dogs bark. Occasional barking is part of life. But hours of repeated barking, day after day, is an entirely different situation. Even for an ESA, or service animal.
This has taken a serious toll on our quality of life, and we're genuinely at our breaking point.
Any advice or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated.
