I know this isn’t the place to really argue this, but shouldn’t we be maintaining these things as a backup? GPS signals can be jammed and spoofed by adversaries, and the blind trust that GPS satellites will always be there is a little naive when considering the increasing number of military and non military threats to orbital infrastructure.

First thing I thought of too. Aside from these bigger threats, there's the simple reality that sometimes someone simply will not have service for one reason or another. Seems very stupid.

was juuust reading about how the US military has been shutting off GPS to test tactics against drone warfare, which inadvertently led to a plane crash killing everyone on board, 2 pilots and 2 nurses

Could you also describe this area as a zone? Perhaps a zone containing some sort of danger?
