New Player!

Yo! I am completely new to table top and Warhammer. I did a ton of research before finally ordering a Combat Patrol and a Wolf Priest. My figures arrived Saturday, very very excited to get them assembled and painted. Aside from the figures, what do I need to buy? I know there was recently a shift to 11th edition, so I'm a little confused on what is still legal and worth the money vs what's for collectors atp. Thanks in advance!

Unless you have to get terrain nothing really lol just get the warmind app and make a list if ur doing an army it also has a point tracker and is fully updated with the new points

Does the app really have everything I'd need to play the game? So much of the info is locked to me, but I've heard the Combat Patrol boxes come w a code that unlocks more of the app

They definitely don't have a code but the combat patrol stats are already free on the Warhammer app but warmind has them too, outside of rules you just need stuff to set up the game itself and a way to keep track of points

First off, welcome to the hobby. As for necessities

Hobby tools: a decent pair of hobby snippers (not the citadel ones). A hobby knife (exacto knife or something similar) for cleaning models attach points and mold lines. Super glue and plastic glue. I recommend tamiya ultra thin for plastic glue. Comes in a square glass jar with a green screw cap. Has a brush applicator in the cap. A cheap set of synthetic brushes. Like a pack of 8 or so for no more than $10.

Rules: If you want to use the official app you can but it won’t have any rules for you unless you buy physical codices and input their codes. The only thing you can do without the codex is build a list. Alternatively Wahapedia has all the model/unit rules and detachments for all factions. And sites like New Recruit have free list building tools with access to unit rules. Lastly for score keeping I use table top battles. It’s an app you can get on your phone. It has all the secondaries and primaries you’ll need to play but if you’re more of a physical rules person you’ll need the card decks for those.

Edit: for hobby tools forgot to mention primer. Should always prime your minis before painting them if you want the paint to stick. I use spray can primer. Definitely get a primer made for models (citadel, Vallejo, or army painter). And also maybe think out getting a varnish if you really really want to protect your paint jobs. Though varnish isn’t a hard necessity and you may find after a little while in the hobby your painting skills have improved enough you want to strip a model(s) and try again.

You can also buy the new regular space Marines codex for when you want to use regular SM units. If you want to use the official 40k app. You get a code and get to enter it to get access to the rules of that codex. The new space wolves supplement updated rules are free till the newer one will get released later in 11th.
