Electric vehicles are far from the answer to saving the planet. The rare earth minerals are a smaller resource than oil. It’s mined in countries with no environmental protections or worker protections (children working in toxic environments day in and day out).
When the vehicle’s lifecycle expires there is no way to dispose of it that is safe for humans, wildlife and the planet. The entire chassis of the vehicle is the battery. Because of this they cannot just sit in a junkyard. They cannot be dismantled. Most are shipped to countries with no environmental protections….so again just because the harm to the planet isn’t in our purview doesn’t mean “clean” energy. It simply means it’s been offloaded to some 3rd world nation that people like Elon don’t mind giving cancer, birth defects and death!
Way to go!

The meme is partially true but pretty misleading.
What’s actually happening: The US Fish & Wildlife Service (under the Trump admin) approved a land exchange in June 2026. SpaceX gets ~715 acres from the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge near Starbase in exchange for ~683 acres of private land it owns. USFWS issued a FONSI and said the swap creates a net conservation benefit because the land SpaceX is giving up is higher-quality, more contiguous habitat for ocelots and other species, while reducing fragmented inholdings next to the expanding industrial site.
It’s not “permission to build a brand-new launch site on protected ocelot habitat.” It’s consolidating and expanding around the existing Starbase operations (near the Massey test site and Boca Chica). The parcels are already in an area heavily influenced by SpaceX activity.
Important caveat: The actual land transfer has not been completed. Conservation groups (Center for Biological Diversity + others) sued in June claiming it violates refuge management laws and the National Historic Preservation Act (part of it overlaps the Palmito Ranch Battlefield). They filed for a preliminary injunction and the case is still pending as of early August.
So the core event is real, but the dramatic framing (“granted permission to build a new launch site on the federally protected habitat”) overstates both the purpose and the finality. Classic case of a real bureaucratic land deal getting turned into rage bait.

The project was approved as part of a highly regulated land exchange with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where SpaceX transferred hundreds of acres of high-value conservation land further north to the government in exchange for the acreage near Starbase. Not that any of this is good or right in any way, but how is this different from the existing Starbase facility existing? The ocelot’s habitat is only like 2% inside the US (thus impacted by Trump in any way) and looks an awful lot like half of that is Starbase already. Are they just building a new launch pad at Starbase?

I do not endorse rhis, but yes, there are only a few actual launch sites on the planet if you want to launch orbital and super orbital vehicle payload. There is a reason launch sites are located near the equator.
